Joe Flacco is going to get himself back into the elite conversation by making it to the Super Bowl

Joe Flacco is going to get himself back into the elite conversation by making it to the Super Bowl. But when he doesn't win, that would actually — I would demand a raise here at Barstool if Joe Flacco made it. That would give me so much content.

Retired the Flacco meter after Donald Trump addressed Flacco's eliteness — where else can it go from there?

I did retire the Flacco meter last year because once Donald Trump addressed [Joe] Flacco's eliteness, it's like, where else can it go from here? But every now and again, you need to kind of check in on it.

Meta-commentary on the Flacco elite debate reaching its peak when Trump weighed in. The Flacco meter was not actually retired — PFT continued discussing it for years.

Invented 'Baldinger's cat' — a quarterback is both elite and not elite at the same time, with Joe Flacco as the perfect example

I came up with a theory. It's known as Baldinger's cat. It's not Schrodinger, it's Baldinger's cat. It's when a quarterback is both elite and not elite at the same time. Joe Flacco — perfect example. Baldinger's cat.

A satirical quantum physics riff on the eternal Flacco elite debate. 'Baldinger's cat' became a recurring PMT bit — one of PFT's most creative Flacco takes.

Flacco had the greatest playoff run I've ever seen on the way to Super Bowl 47, and his hair is elite

His hair is elite. Not as elite as yours, but his hair is elite. [Joe Flacco] had the greatest run I've ever seen on the way to Super Bowl 47.

Flacco's 2012 playoff run (11 TDs, 0 INTs, 117.2 passer rating) is genuinely regarded as one of the best ever. 'Greatest ever' is subjective but defensible.

Joe Flacco... he does not stink. I think he's amazing. I put him as elite. You give him the right team, he wins the Super Bowl. He won the Super Bowl.

Joe Flacco is officially no longer elite and stinks

I think Flacco stinks. Are we now worried that Joe Flacco's eliteness is so far behind us that we will never remember that he was once elite?

Flacco's 2017 season was poor (18 TDs, 13 INTs) and he was eventually replaced by Lamar Jackson. His 'elite' status never returned.

Joe Flacco is not elite overall but has elite moments that elevate his team

Elite? Right on the border... In the pressure moments, can a guy rise up and elevate his team to the elite level? ... Joe Flacco not elite anymore but was once elite. No, no, no. Has elite moments. And raise his team to an elite level. Get it right.

This is a semantic debate about the word 'elite' and cannot be definitively proven.

Donald Trump has also weighed in on the Joe Flacco elite debate. Somebody asked him that back in 2016, and his answer was he won a Super Bowl, so I'd say he's pretty elite. So yes, Joe Flacco — [Trump] is now officially on the stance of Joe Flacco being elite.

Joe Flacco should have beaten the Patriots and would have won two Super Bowls — he's more than borderline elite

I'm getting a little steamed up about Joe Flacco because of what you said, borderline elite. People forget he should have beaten the Patriots. He beats the shit out of the Patriots on the road. He should have beaten them in the playoffs that one year. His tight end dropped the ball. His kicker missed a kick. If they had that game won, they would have won another Super Bowl.

Flacco did nearly beat the Patriots in the 2011 AFC Championship (Lee Evans dropped TD, Billy Cundiff missed FG). Whether that makes him elite is inherently subjective.

If Joe Flacco wins a Super Bowl with the Browns, he's won two and he's definitively elite — I put a thousand dollars on it at 50-to-1

It would be so awesome if Joe Flacco won a Super Bowl with these Browns. As of Friday I put a thousand dollars future on the Browns thinking that they were gonna get Joe Flacco. So it pays out 50 to 1. If Joe Flacco wins a Super Bowl and he does his normal Joe Flacco thing where he doesn't make any mistakes, gets the pass interferences — that would contribute so much to the Flacco discourse. At that point he's won two Super Bowls. He's elite.

Flacco did not win the Super Bowl with the Browns. They made the playoffs but lost in the Wild Card round to the Texans 45-14.

Per the offensive coordinator of the Browns, Alex Van Pelt, he said Flacco still has an elite arm. Listen, I've staked my entire reputation on Joe Flacco possibly being elite.

Joe Flacco has an elite spiral and I'm bullish on him taking the Browns to the playoffs

Joe Flacco actually looked good today. The spiral was sick. He has an elite spiral. He was hitting dudes downfield. He had a connection with Elijah Moore. Flacco was still throwing the fuck out of the football today. I'm bullish on Joe Flacco. I think he's definitely better than DTR or PJ Walker. I could see Joe Flacco taking this team to the playoffs.

Flacco did take the Browns to the 2023 playoffs, going 4-1 as a starter and earning AFC Offensive Player of the Month in December.

Stopped calling Flacco 'Fucko' after watching him throw a perfect 15-yard out — his arm strength is one of the strongest in NFL history

I used to call [Flacco] Fucko, that was my nickname for him. But that's when I stopped calling him [Fucko] — when he threw a 15-yard out, which is the hardest throw to make. It's the farthest ball. And he threw it on point. I stopped calling him Fucko. [Flacco] has one of the strongest arms in the history of football, in my opinion.

Joe Flacco is Baldinger's cat — both elite and not elite at the same time, and the debate always ends with 'but so did Trent Dilfer'

I call him Baldinger's cat because he's both elite and not elite at the same time. And he makes everybody furious depending on what your take on Joe Flacco is. And here's how the conversation always goes. Is Joe Flacco elite? Yes. Why? He won a Super Bowl. So did Trent Dilfer. And that's the end of that conversation.

Flacco was a bum for the first three quarters and then elite. That's what makes [Flacco] so confusing. You have to almost Men in Black yourself and take the device out and make you forget all the boneheaded mistakes that he made. Because he thinks he can make every throw.

You got the full Joe Flacco experience — elite stretches where he can throw it a mile, then he just quits after the first quarter; that's Baldinger's cat

You got the full Joe Flacco experience because the old debate on whether or not he's elite goes back to Joe having games and stretches where he's just like, oh, this guy can throw the football a mile. And then he'll have a game like this where he just pretty much quits after the first quarter. And it's like, okay, it's not here today. I'm not elite today, but my eliteness will come back. It's Baldinger's cat — being elite and not elite at the same time.

The 'elite' label came from winning games without gaudy stats — people wear the sweatshirt both sincerely and as a joke, and either way it's fun

I was winning a bunch of games in Baltimore, but my stats were never gonna fly off the stat sheet. We were winning games because we had a formula with how we won games. So that word always came up around me because it was like, he's winning a lot of football games and playing good football, but it's not like he's throwing for 350 and four touchdowns every week. So it was like, can we call him [elite]? The funny thing is now people could — I have buddies wearing the sweatshirt because they're like, damn right he's elite. And I have detractors that are using it as a meme. It kind of goes both ways. But who cares? That's part of it. That's what makes it kind of fun.

Flacco himself provides the definitive insider perspective on the 'elite' debate — he's self-aware that his game-manager style created the ambiguity, and he's embraced the meme.

Joe Flacco is actually a very elite quarterback — he won a Super Bowl, absolutely he is elite

Joe Flacco is actually a very elite quarterback. He won a Super Bowl. He did it really to a certain extent with that great arm of his. I would say absolutely he is an elite quarterback.
