Fans don't belong on the court ever and players don't belong in the stands ever

my perspective is fans don't belong on the court ever. And players don't belong in the stands ever. That's, I don't think that's a controversial thing.

Several million college students across America disagreed.

Someone will eventually get seriously injured during a court storming

It's dangerous, man. Yeah. and it is. It's dangerous now. And we've had significant injuries over the years... Something bad's gonna happen. And when it does, we're gonna have the audacity to be surprised at it.

While several minor injuries occurred (like Kyle Filipowski's sprain mentioned in the episode), a 'catastrophic' event hasn't yet ended the practice nationally.

Using the word 'disingenuous' is the same as calling someone a liar

Ingenuous means lying... No, I think what it meant is not only did you not know what disingenuous means, I did... Disingenuous is calling somebody a liar.

Disingenuous typically means insincere or not candid, often by pretending that one knows less about something than one really does. While it implies dishonesty, it is not strictly synonymous with 'lying.'

Big Cat only thinks court storming is fine because he hasn't had his knee sprained by a fan yet

Now he got hurt and it maybe the injury wasn't enough for you. So No, I'll come and I'll come and sprain your knee and then you claim that I'm fine.

This is a rhetorical hypothetical aimed at making a point about empathy and safety standards.

Illinois and USF are teams trending toward a strong March run

I think Illinois is starting to trend in that direction... they're starting to look like they could do some real damage there. South Florida's another team that's trending a little bit like Florida Atlantic did last year.

Illinois made it to the Elite Eight (a very strong run). USF won the American regular season but failed to make the NCAA tournament, losing in the NIT second round.

NIL should have no rules and operate like normal business with multi-year contracts

There wouldn't be any rules. I would have it operate just like normal business does... the schools could just pay the athletes directly... they would sign the players to multi-year contracts... It's really not that difficult. And that way the transfer portal's not as big of an issue.

Subjective policy proposal, though the House settlement in 2024 has moved college sports closer to this revenue-sharing model.

Paying players directly will spread talent around college sports, not concentrate it at the top schools

I differ with that viewpoint. I think most reasonable economists would tell you that's not how it's going to work. What being able to pay is going to do is spread talent around more. It is not gonna concentrate talent... Talent will be spread around. We've already seen it with NIL.

This is a debated economic theory in the context of sports; time will tell if parity increases as pay-for-play becomes more formalized.

If court storming ended tomorrow, ratings and engagement would be exactly the same

I think if it ended tomorrow, we would see the same passion and the same ratings and the same level of engagement that we always see.

Court storming has not been banned. The NCAA implemented a $100,000 fine in 2024 and it continued to happen anyway.

Would have tasered the dog that ran on a basketball court in Chile

I would've tasered the dog. And then euthanized the owner.

Bilas's proposed enforcement framework escalated from citations to tasering a dog to euthanizing a human being within the span of one interview.

Would have 'clubbed that dog like a baby seal' to stop court storming

I would've clubbed that dog like a baby seal that all would've stopped.

The man who opened the interview by lecturing about nuance closed it by proposing baby seal clubbing as a deterrent for dogs on basketball courts.

Josh Schertz at Indiana State is a top 3 schematic coach in the country

Josh Schertz at Indiana State would be number one... It's like watching a European Pro team that's been together for a long time. It's just magnificent.

Schertz's success at Indiana State led to him being hired by Saint Louis in 2024, validating Bilas's assessment of his coaching talent.

I don't need an agreement to disagree — why can't we just disagree?

I've never understood what that means. Why can't we just disagree? I don't need an agreement to disagree.

Bilas took issue with a common English phrase on the grounds that he had not signed any paperwork.

I knew what 'disingenuous' meant in high school

No, I think what it meant is not only did you not know what disingenuous means, I did. But you did. You had to look it up. No, and that's not, didn't I actually knew what that meant when I was in high school.

A Duke-educated attorney bragged about knowing the word 'disingenuous' since high school to a man whose job is making people laugh.

North Carolina was the favorite to win the NCAA Tournament from the start of the year

I thought they were the favorite at the beginning, honestly. I thought for the whole year, since I saw them at Maui in November, that Carolina was the best team.

UNC went on to win the 2017 championship, validating Bilas's season-long assessment.

If North Carolina plays well, they will win the National Championship

I just think Carolina's got too many weapons. If Carolina plays well, they win. For them to lose, they're going to have to play less than well, less than their best.

North Carolina did indeed win the 2017 National Championship.

Gonzaga will beat South Carolina in the Final Four because of their scoring depth

I favor Gonzaga because they've got so many more scorers and shooters. You know, South Carolina's not been a great offensive team all year... otherwise, I like Gonzaga to win the game.

Gonzaga defeated South Carolina 77-73 in the Final Four.

Coach K will retire in four or five years

My guess is like four years or so, four or five, but you never know... Four to five years. I don't know, but that's my guess.

Exactly correct. Jay Bilas made this prediction in March 2017, and Coach K retired following the 2021-22 season (5 years later).

A broadcaster will not get a Power 5 head coaching job like Oklahoma State

I just don't see places like Oklahoma State, like Power 5 Jobs, going to broadcasters like us. I would find that kind of hard to believe, but you never know.

Historically, this remains mostly true for Power 5 jobs, though some (like Juwan Howard or Penny Hardaway) had other ties. Gottlieb did eventually get the Green Bay job in 2024, which is not Power 5.

It is a near certainty that college players will eventually boycott a game

I do think as the players, as we go forward, the players are getting more sort of socially aware and their awareness of their power in the marketplace is becoming greater. I think we'll see at some point somebody will boycott. I don't know when it's going to come, but I think it's a near certainty it's going to happen.

While not a widespread 'Final Four' boycott as joked about by PFT, player empowerment and NIL have fundamentally changed the power balance as Bilas predicted.
