Paul Bissonnette, Jay Bilas, Peter King Retires, and the War on Ice Cream
The end of an era is upon us as Peter King has officially hung up the pen. Big Cat and PFT reflect on a legendary career of coffee columns and travel grievances, even if the man still owes Big Cat twelve bucks for a double-double. While Peter King moves into a new phase of life, PFT thinks he knows exactly what the future holds for the King of the Monday morning notebook.
Peter King will write Andy Reid's biography in retirement
I don't know how long Peter's gonna be able to hang the pen up for... Peter King might just become the next like biographer of football coaches. He's probably gonna write Andy Reid's biography.
Before diving into the interviews, Hank continues his countdown of the greatest New England Patriots ever. Despite the documentary series currently airing to get Robert Kraft into the Hall of Fame, Hank is staying focused on the guys on the field. This week, he highlights a defensive legend who defined the early dynasty years.
Tedy Bruschi is the #3 all-time Patriot
Number three... Heart and Soul of the defense... Legend. Teddy Bruski.
Hot Seat/Cool Throne
Hot Seat is heating up for Taylor Gooch after his comments about the upcoming Masters. With the LIV golfer lacking an exemption, he's already casting a shadow over the green jacket ceremony. Hank finds the "asterisk" talk a bit rich, even if Gooch is standing on his own high ground.
The 2024 Masters will have an asterisk because Taylor Gooch wasn't invited
Taylor Gooch was interviewed... and he said he's going to be an asterisk. It's just a reality. Taylor Gooch will always remember as the Masters that didn't have Taylor Gooch.
Big Cat takes aim at Clay Travis for his bizarre attack on the President's ice cream habits. Apparently, there is a segment of the population that thinks grown men eating ice cream by themselves is weird. Big Cat isn't having it, vowing to eat a cone in solo protest because some things are just sacred.
Grown men getting ice cream by themselves is actually great
Do you know grown men who go get ice cream by themselves? I don't. It's very strange. [Big Cat responding to Clay Travis quote] Literally all the time I get ice cream. I'm gonna do that as a protest tonight. I'm gonna get ice cream by myself... Ice cream by yourself is actually great.
On the Cool Throne, Jake Marsh is celebrating the expansion of the MAC. With UMass joining the fold, the future of Tuesday night Maction is brighter than ever. More games, more weeknights, and more excuses to stay on the couch in November.
UMass moving to the MAC is great for 'MACtion' and weeknight football
My cool Throne is Mion, we're getting more Mion because UMass is getting added, which means more games back... more weeknight football eventually.
Biz Nasty and the State of Hockey
Paul Bissonnette finally made it onto the show after a "healthy scratch" last week, and he brought a massive amount of hockey knowledge with him. Biz breaks down the emotional return of Patrick Kane to Chicago and why the legacy of "Showtime" is unmatched among American skaters.
Patrick Kane is the greatest American-born hockey player ever
Patrick Kane's gonna go down when he Retires as the best American born player of all time. I still think that there's potential room for Matthews to maybe overtake that Throne... but for now, let's give Patrick Kane his flowers.
As the NHL playoffs approach, Biz identifies the Florida Panthers as the "wagon" to watch in the East. He also addresses his blossoming career as a Big J reporter following the Mike Babcock situation in Columbus, noting that while he doesn't care about journalistic integrity, he will always stand up for the players when a coach starts looking through their private photos.
The Maple Leafs will beat the Bruins in the first round and win the Stanley Cup
I am hoping that they draw Boston as a first round matchup... I feel if the Leafs end up matching up with Boston the first round. I think they beat 'em and then they go on to March to win the Stanley Cup.
The Great Court Storming Debate with Jay Bilas
Jay Bilas joins the show for what becomes a slightly contentious but fascinating breakdown of the current state of college basketball. The primary point of friction? Court storming. Bilas isn't interested in the "memories" or the "passion" if it means players are at risk of injury.
Alexander Ovechkin will break Wayne Gretzky's goal record in two years
Next year he'll probably get whatever, 30, 35 goals. And then the following year is when you're really gonna see this, this kind of parade as you're describing start. It's gonna be a stroke off Fest, double wrister, every goddamn game that he's, he's on the broadcast.
Big Cat and PFT tried to find common ground by pointing out that the big moments are what make college sports unique, but Bilas remained unmoved. He argued that the only reason it still happens is that administrators love the marketing visual too much to actually enforce the rules.
Paying players directly will spread talent around college sports, not concentrate it at the top schools
I differ with that viewpoint. I think most reasonable economists would tell you that's not how it's going to work. What being able to pay is going to do is spread talent around more. It is not gonna concentrate talent... Talent will be spread around. We've already seen it with NIL.
Things got technical when the discussion turned to the definition of "disingenuous." Bilas, ever the Duke law grad, wasn't afraid to correct the vocabulary of the hosts while doubling down on his stance that the safety of the participants should always come before a student's desire to jump around on center court.
Someone will eventually get seriously injured during a court storming
It's dangerous, man. Yeah. and it is. It's dangerous now. And we've had significant injuries over the years... Something bad's gonna happen. And when it does, we're gonna have the audacity to be surprised at it.
Beyond the debate, Bilas provided some actual basketball insight for those looking ahead to March. He’s keeping a close eye on a few programs that are peaking at the right time and some mid-major coaches who are tactically outclassing the field.
Illinois and USF are teams trending toward a strong March run
I think Illinois is starting to trend in that direction... they're starting to look like they could do some real damage there. South Florida's another team that's trending a little bit like Florida Atlantic did last year.
Would have 'clubbed that dog like a baby seal' to stop court storming
I would've clubbed that dog like a baby seal that all would've stopped.
To wrap things up, the guys hit on a listener-submitted take about the nightmare of Korean BBQ manual labor and debate the merits of a 99 Pug merchandise line.
At the end of the day, we can all agree to disagree—unless you're Jay Bilas, in which case you just disagree.
