The NFL Combine workout is a small portion of player evaluation compared to game tape

The the workout part is a really small portion for me at least. I think it's led to some mis evaluations. The tape is the biggest guide. What I do think the combine's beneficial for is the medical checks... and then you spend those 15 minute increments where you're able to just get a feel for their football acumen.

This is a professional philosophy from a successful head coach.

Prospects are defined by how they handle the biggest adversity they've faced

The best thing... is, hey, what's the biggest adversity you faced and how did you bounce back from it? I'm such a big believer just based on the course of things that have occurred... that even though the most challenging moments, they felt like the worst thing when you're in 'em, you look back on 'em and you're saying, I don't know where I would be without what those lessons and those tough times taught me.

This is a personal and professional belief on character evaluation.

Cooper Kupp is likely going to part ways with the Rams

In the eight years going into year nine, there hasn't been a more challenging circumstance that you have to navigate relative to knowing that the most likely outcome is we're parting ways with him [Cooper Kupp]. He's a legacy ram... he's done so many incredible things... but he's been a real one throughout it. And sometimes these tough conversations are real things.

Cooper Kupp remained with the Rams for the 2024 season, despite trade rumors and McVay's comments here suggesting a likely departure.

Going 5-12 in 2022 was the best thing that ever happened to me professionally

The best thing in these eight years that's happened to me, it was going five and 12 in 2022. Like it really was because of what that force. Like I had to get my ass broken down and really exposed on a public level where you're really saying like, all right, some of these insecurities you have now, you can't hide from 'em and you're either gonna handle it the way that you would want to advise your son or you're gonna run away from it.

This is a personal reflection on his career development.

Punting on 4th and 14 against the Lions in the 2023 playoffs was a mistake

I look at it and I'm being dead ass serious about this too. Some of the red zone sequencing... But that stings and and I'll tell you why. And I'm not afraid to admit I would do that differently. I would've called probably the sequence leading up to that differently. Whether it works out or goes down the way we want, I don't know. But I think to take the ball outta Matthew [Stafford's] hands and to then sit there... shame on me for that.

The coach himself admitted it was a regret and a tactical error in hindsight.

Blake Bortles has the leadership and experience to not flinch in big-time games

Jared and [Bortles] have a great relationship and anytime that you can get a guy like Blake where when you meet him... he's one of those guys, he's got a great demeanor where you're like, you know, this guy feels like a quarterback, a leader. Then you hear him a couple days out here just the way he commands a huddle you can see why his teammates believe in him... [He] has been in those types of games, in those atmospheres where you know he's not going to flinch.

This is McVay's professional evaluation of his player.

I deserved the criticism for my coaching performance in Super Bowl LIII

I'm talking about the criticism of my coaching in the Super Bowl. I deserve it. ... I'd be lying if I said, you know, if things go a little off track, you probably have too many thoughts in your head and you would have a different rhythm. I don't necessarily know if you're working any less hard for the preparation, but, you know, Coach Belichick and the Patriots are, you know, they're the standard right now.

The Rams scored only 3 points in Super Bowl LIII, which is widely considered a coaching failure by McVay.

Zach Robinson is going to be a star on the coaching staff

We were able to get a guy on our staff in Zach Robinson, who he has some, you know, traits that remind you of both Matt [LaFleur] and Zac Taylor. And I think this guy's going to be a star. ... He studied as much film as anybody. When you ask, you know, he was putting in every coverage for all the past plays in the league every single week and did a good job for them.

Zach Robinson became a highly touted assistant and eventually the Offensive Coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in 2024.
