Sean McVay, Jerry O’Connell, and an Adam Schefter Sneak Attack
NFL free agency is heating up, and we kicked things off by bidding farewell to the San Diego era of the Chargers. Joey Bosa being cut marks the end of an era for the franchise, though Hank wasn't exactly ready to build the man a statue just yet.
A five-time Pro Bowl resume doesn't make Joey Bosa an all-time franchise great
I'm spoiled with greatness. So it's like when you talk about all time players of a franchise five time Pro bowler, rookie of the year is not exactly all time. It's just a good solid player.
PFT immediately started looking at the destination, and he’s already manifesting a family reunion in San Francisco.
Joey Bosa will try to join the 49ers to play with his brother
Joey Bosa cut. I think people expected it... but I I heard rumors that he might want to go up to the Bay play with his brother. Ooh, the Bosa brothers together.
With DK Metcalf also looking for a way out of Seattle, the guys looked at potential landing spots. PFT wants to see the most chaotic wide receiver room in the league by pairing DK with George Pickens in Pittsburgh.
DK Metcalf should be traded to the Steelers
DK Metcalf wants out. He wants to go to a Contender too, I think. And he also wants a new contract. I personally would like to see DK on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Him and Georgie [Pickens] out there together.
The Fantasy Consultant Ambush
Jerry O'Connell joined the show for what he thought was a standard Oscars preview, but it quickly devolved into a performance review for his role as our fantasy football manager. Jerry tried to flex his statistical knowledge by citing historical team turnarounds, but the vibe shifted when Adam Schefter called in for a surprise "interview" to see if Jerry was actually fit for the job.
Schefty didn't hold back, grillling Jerry on everything from his Android green bubbles to his commitment levels. Jerry defended his honor with a new draft strategy that might make running back truthets sick.
Fantasy football teams should draft wide receivers early and wait for running backs until round 4-6
If I were to remain in charge of the draft... we're gonna go heavy on wide receivers in the beginning and we're not gonna pick up running backs until maybe the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds.
Before letting Jerry go, he delivered another legendary R-H-O-B-A-C-K poem that took shots at Big Cat's aging knees and PFT's potential for killing livestock. It was a masterpiece of hostility.
Sean McVay on Adversity and Staffords
Super Bowl winning head coach Sean McVay sat down with Big Cat and PFT to talk about the state of the Rams. McVay was incredibly candid about his growth as a coach, admitting that being hired at 30 meant he had to learn how to be a man while leading a locker room. He surprisingly pointed to a losing season as his most important milestone.
Going 5-12 in 2022 was the best thing that ever happened to me professionally
The best thing in these eight years that's happened to me, it was going five and 12 in 2022. Like it really was because of what that force. Like I had to get my ass broken down and really exposed on a public level where you're really saying like, all right, some of these insecurities you have now, you can't hide from 'em and you're either gonna handle it the way that you would want to advise your son or you're gonna run away from it.
The conversation moved to player evaluation and why McVay has been skipping the combine in recent years. He’s much more interested in the person than the 40-yard dash, and he has a very specific go-to question for prospects.
Prospects are defined by how they handle the biggest adversity they've faced
The best thing... is, hey, what's the biggest adversity you faced and how did you bounce back from it? I'm such a big believer just based on the course of things that have occurred... that even though the most challenging moments, they felt like the worst thing when you're in 'em, you look back on 'em and you're saying, I don't know where I would be without what those lessons and those tough times taught me.
The NFL Combine workout is a small portion of player evaluation compared to game tape
The the workout part is a really small portion for me at least. I think it's led to some mis evaluations. The tape is the biggest guide. What I do think the combine's beneficial for is the medical checks... and then you spend those 15 minute increments where you're able to just get a feel for their football acumen.
We also got some tough news regarding a Rams legend. While Matthew Stafford is locked in, it sounds like the Cooper Kupp era in Los Angeles is nearing its inevitable conclusion.
Cooper Kupp is likely going to part ways with the Rams
In the eight years going into year nine, there hasn't been a more challenging circumstance that you have to navigate relative to knowing that the most likely outcome is we're parting ways with him [Cooper Kupp]. He's a legacy ram... he's done so many incredible things... but he's been a real one throughout it. And sometimes these tough conversations are real things.
Fyre Fest and The Guzzler
To wrap up the week, the guys discussed their recent Barstool After Dark "Doug Dug Challenge" where Big Cat and Max attempted to eat their way through 15 different drive-thrus. Big Cat earned the nickname "The Guzzler" for his ability to find room for milkshakes when solid food was no longer an option.
Binging a TV show is much better than watching it week-by-week
This is my big, i I like binging shows. I like just diving right into 'em. I don't know how people can watch a show like I gave up on House of Dragon. Yeah. Because I watched the first season and then it was four years and I was like, I don't remember fucking shit. I'm out.
Max finally broke his lottery ball curse while sitting in Memes' chair, proving that the chair has more luck than the man usually occupying it.
At least we know if the NFL coaching thing doesn't work out, Big Cat's "Fake Punt-Punt" is ready for the big stage.
