Pete Prisco on NFL Preview, Tom Brady’s Greatness, and Week 1 Predictions

Football is officially back, and Tom Brady is already making everyone feel like it’s 2001 all over again. After a wild opening night that saw the Bucs edge out the Cowboys, Big Cat and PFT break down why Dak Prescott looked surprisingly sharp despite the loss. While the guys were impressed with Dak’s return, the real story was the 44-year-old in the TB12 jersey who simply refuses to age.

Dak Prescott is officially back and might not have been as injured as reported

Dak, I think, is back. I'm actually starting to think that maybe he wasn't as hurt as Jerry [Jones] was letting us know that he was.

Dak played 16 games and threw for over 4,400 yards in 2021, proving he was fully recovered from the 2020 ankle injury.

Big Cat is convinced we aren't anywhere near the end of the road for the GOAT, especially after seeing him pick apart a Dallas defense that still looks like it has plenty of holes.

Tom Brady will play for at least another three years

If you had to bet and you're like, all right, he's going to play for another three years, I wouldn't bet against that. It's crazy. It defies everything.

Tom Brady played two more seasons (2021, 2022) after this take before retiring in early 2023.

The Ultimate Stakes

The guys introduced a new weekly picks segment that might actually result in the end of the podcast. Big Cat, PFT, Hank, Jake, Billy, and Bubba are all picking a favorite, an underdog, and an over/under every week. The loser (last place) and the second-place finisher have to drive together from New York to Los Angeles for the Super Bowl. It’s pure chaos because you can’t even tank properly to avoid second place when everyone is this bad at gambling.

PFT is already playing mind games with his picks, choosing to bet against his own heart when it comes to the Washington Football Team.

I will bet heavy on the Chargers this year to hedge against my own Washington expectations

I'm going to bet heavy on the Chargers. ... Because I regrettably have expectations for the Washington football team. But I'm going to bet against them because I've made the decision in my brain of how many dollars I'm willing to pay for a win.

The Chargers finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs in 2021, while Washington went 7-10. The 'heavy bet' on the Chargers likely didn't pay off as they missed postseason expectations.

While PFT is hedging his happiness, he isn't holding back on his feelings about some other contenders in the NFC. He’s already reaching for the fraud stamp before the first Sunday kickoff even happens.

The Seahawks are frauds this year

Seahawks, they might get my fraud stamp. ... My way too early fraud stamp goes to Seattle.

The Seahawks finished 7-10 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017, validating PFT's skepticism.

Big Cat, on the other hand, is finding value in the NFC East gutter, thinking the Eagles might actually be competent enough to stay in the hunt until the weather turns cold.

The Eagles will be in contention for the NFC East in mid-November

I feel like that's where they're going to be, I don't know, somewhere in that 7-10. 7-9-1 area where there will be a moment where they're competing for the NFC East sometime in mid-November.

The Eagles actually finished 9-8 and made the playoffs as a Wild Card, though the Cowboys ran away with the division (12-5).

He’s significantly less optimistic about his own Bears, specifically their ability to move the chains against a terrifying Rams defense in Week 1.

The Bears will score fewer than 13 points against the Rams and the game will go under 47

My under is the Bears-Rams, 46 and a half. I don't think the Bears are going to score 13 points. ... Add all those so bads up, that's an under. ... Give me 47.

The Rams won 34-14, meaning the total (48) went slightly over the predicted 47, and the Bears scored 14 points, just exceeding his 13-point ceiling.

Pete Prisco’s Season Outlook

Friend of the program Pete Prisco joined the show to give his 33rd annual season preview. Pete didn't waste any time coming out with a bold Super Bowl prediction that involves Josh Allen taking the next leap and finally dethroning the Chiefs in the AFC.

The Buffalo Bills will beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl

And it's the Buffalo Bills winning it all, beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Neither team made the Super Bowl; the Rams beat the Bengals. The Bills lost in the divisional round and the Bucs lost in the divisional round.

Prisco also shared his scouting reports on the rookie class. While everyone is eyeing the quarterbacks, Pete is obsessed with what he saw from the Buccaneers’ defensive front during training camp.

Joe Tryon will be the Defensive Rookie of the Year

I think defensively, I think Joe Tryon is going to be the rookie of the year. That kid's unblockable. ... of all the guys I saw in training camp, he was the most impressive rookie of all of them.

Micah Parsons won Defensive Rookie of the Year unanimously. Tryon-Shoyinka had 4 sacks and was not in the running.

On the flip side, things are looking grim for Dan Campbell’s debut season in Detroit. Pete has the Lions pegged for the cellar, though he thinks the team will at least play hard for their kneecap-biting head coach.

The Lions will have the number one overall pick in the 2022 draft

Which team will be picking first in next year's draft? The Lions.

The Jaguars actually finished with the worst record (3-14) for the second straight year. The Lions finished with the 2nd pick (3-13-1).

Quarterback Controversies and Coaching Clashes

The conversation turned to the AFC East, where Prisco is surprisingly bullish on Bill Belichick’s ability to guide a rookie Mac Jones to the postseason over the hype-train Dolphins.

The Patriots will make the playoffs because their offensive line and coaching are superior to the Dolphins

Dolphins or Patriots, one of those teams makes the playoffs, which one are you picking? Patriots. ... because I think their offensive line is significantly better. ... and Belichick knows defense ... they're going to be a playoff team.

The Patriots finished 10-7 and made the playoffs as a Wild Card. The Dolphins finished 9-8 and missed out.

When it comes to the quarterback position, Pete has a very simple philosophy: you've either got it or you don't. He isn't a fan of the "sit and learn" method, arguing that the only way to know if a guy can play is to throw him into the fire.

You either have 'it' as a quarterback or you don't; sitting and learning doesn't help

You either have it or you don't. ... Everybody always says, well, Aaron Rodgers got the watch for a couple years before he played, and it really helped make him a better quarterback. No, it didn't. You either have it or you don't.

This is a fundamental scouting philosophy debate that is inherently subjective.

This led to a heated debate between Big Cat and Pete regarding the Bears' situation. Big Cat is still holding onto the dream that Mitch Trubisky was never the true problem in Chicago, while Pete is firmly in the camp that Andy Dalton provides a much-needed veteran floor.

Mitchell Trubisky is not worse than Andy Dalton as a starting quarterback

Andy Dalton's not better than Mitchell Trubisky as we currently sit here. ... Andy Dalton's not better than Mitch Trubisky. Right this second. You think Andy Dalton's a better starter than Mitch Trubisky? I disagree.

Subjective comparison of two bridge/backup tier quarterbacks.

Andy Dalton is a better quarterback than Mitchell Trubisky

He's better than Mitchell Trubisky. ... Because he is. He's a better player. ... [Mitchell Trubisky] looked good in the preseason, but there's some guys that when they're playing with as the starter, the pressure is too much for him.

This is a subjective comparison between two quarterbacks who were both moving into backup or bridge roles shortly after this take.

To wrap things up, Big Cat doubled down on his Kirk Cousins hate, predicting a mid-season meltdown in Minnesota that leads to the Kellen Mond era starting earlier than anyone expects.

Kirk Cousins will be benched for Kellen Mond for performance reasons this year

Do you think Kellen Mond plays for performance reasons this year? Yes. I'll just say yes. ... I think Kirk Cousins stinks.

Cousins played 16 games and had a very solid statistical year (33 TD, 7 INT). Mond only appeared in one game briefly and never started. Cousins was never benched for performance.

The 49ers will win the NFC West regardless of who plays quarterback

I think the 49ers are going to win the division no matter who plays quarterback, and I think it's going to be Jimmy Garoppolo. It should be Jimmy Garoppolo. I think the 49ers will win that division.

The Rams won the NFC West (12-5). The 49ers finished third in the division (10-7) but did make a deep playoff run to the NFC Championship.

Alvin Kamara is going to have a monster year because Sean Payton will use the running backs more without Drew Brees

Kamara is going to have a monster year. I think they should give him more carries. ... If you go back and look at his history, when [Sean Payton] didn't have wide receivers, he used the tight ends in the running back.

Kamara had a productive year with 1,337 total yards in 13 games, though his touchdown total (9) was a significant drop from his 21-TD season in 2020.

Justin Jefferson will be the best receiver in the league by the end of the year

Justin Jefferson is going to be the best receiver in the league by the end of the year.

Jefferson was Second Team All-Pro in 2021 with 1,616 yards. Cooper Kupp won the Triple Crown and OPOY, making Kupp the consensus 'best' that specific year, though Jefferson was elite.
