I will officially retire from broadcasting in two and a half years

Two and a half years, and then I'll be done. I won't be working, yeah. I won't. I'll be strictly Sandler movies and that's it.

The actual retirement date will be verifiable at the end of his current contract.

I turned down hosting The Price Is Right despite a $10 million offer

I get a call out the blue and said, 'Hey, we're interested in having you host Price is Right.' And they said, Bob Barker signed off on you... I just didn't think I could do it well enough. It was $10 million a year [in 1999].

This is a personal historical account of a private job offer.

ESPN used a 'smear campaign' and mafia-like tactics against me when I left the network in 2007

It was frightening. Because there was this smear campaign that started the, any radio affiliate that had my show, you'd be dropped as an ESPN affiliate if you'd decided you still wanted to carry me. It's mafia shit. Yeah. There it was heavy handed... They were trying to send a message to the, the talent that they still had. Like if you leave, oh, we fuck you up. There's no doubt.

While ESPN likely wouldn't confirm these specific tactics publicly, this is a widely reported historical account of the era's 'Bristol Mafia' reputation.

Keith Olbermann was an unbelievable partner with a great news sense on SportsCenter

I was with Keith Olbermann, and we said, we want the first 15 minutes to be about Mickey Mantle... Keith would always fight the, he had a great news sense. He was, he was unbelievable as a partner. Unbelievable.

Subjective professional assessment of a colleague.

If Dan Marino played in today's NFL, he would pass for 6,000 yards in a season

Marino changed the game. Marino in today's game, he'd approach 6,000 yards probably. He'd throw for 50 [touchdowns] because that wasn't the difficulty for him. He was doing that before. And he is convincing Don Shula a defensive minded head coach to let him throw the ball as much as he wants.

This is a hypothetical 'what if' that cannot be proven, making it inherently subjective.

Mike White will win more games as the Dolphins starter this year than Tua Tagovailoa

My spiciest NFL take is Mike White will win more games for the Dolphins than Tua Tagovailoa. I just did this the other day. I'm rooting for him [Tua]... I'll take that back. No, I'll stand by it.

Tua Tagovailoa started all 17 games for the Dolphins in 2023, leading them to 11 wins. Mike White played in only 6 games and did not start or win a game. This was spectacularly wrong.

Tom Brady will come out of retirement to play for the New York Jets

Tom Brady comes out of retirement. And he comes out of retirement to play for the Jets.

Tom Brady remained retired throughout the 2023 season and beyond. The Jets stuck with Aaron Rodgers (until his injury) and then Zach Wilson.

Trey Lance is not a better quarterback than Cooper Rush

But Trey Lance isn't better than Cooper Rush. [Big Cat: I don't know.] No. You think? No.

Trey Lance never played a snap for the Cowboys in 2023, serving as the emergency third QB while Rush remained the primary backup, suggesting the team agreed with the assessment.

The Big Ten will likely miss their target return date of October 10th.

The target date is October 10th. That allow them to play 10 games and then they could get into the playoffs whether they get to the October 10th date, which I doubt they are. That was what their plan was.

The Big Ten did miss the October 10th target date, ultimately returning on October 24th, 2020.

The Pac-12 will not play football this fall.

The Pac-12 is not going to play this fall just You know, I don't want you have your hopes up. If even if your hopes were up before they're not going to play football. This this fall. It's gonna be they're gonna try to play in January.

The Pac-12 reversed course and played a shortened 2020 season starting on November 7th.

Pete Rose will not and should not get into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

He shouldn't get in the Hall of Fame he won't get in the Hall of Fame... he was betting on his team. Right but but now that on your team, but now you can manipulate money but they're taking gambling money. That's hip right? I know but he could manipulate the lineup.

Pete Rose remains banned from baseball and has not been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a fraud who needs a signature move to succeed in the playoffs.

I had no problem saying the Miami Heat would win that series against Milwaukee had no problem saying that whatsoever because in the in that playoffs, you can't just run up and down the floor like they do during the regular season. Miami has had a great philosophy here, but I think the Greek Freak has got to get a signature move.

Giannis won the 2021 NBA title the following year. While he didn't develop a traditional post 'signature move,' he proved his style could win at the highest level.

I know Pete Rose bet on the Reds every night, and possibly against them

I knew his bookie... I called my former bookie... I said, did he bet on the Reds? And he said, he bet on games with the Reds. And I said, did he bet against the Reds? And he said, I don't want to say that. So that's a yes.

While Rose eventually admitted to betting on the Reds to win, the claim he bet *against* them has been debated but never definitively proven or admitted by Rose.

Some great coordinators are simply not meant to be head coaches

There are certain guys who were just assistant coaches... Just because you're good at being a defensive coordinator doesn't mean you can be a head coach... certain guys are meant to be a head coach, certain guys are not.

History generally supports this as many elite coordinators fail as HCs, but it remains a subjective evaluation of individuals.

The morning sports media market is completely oversaturated and lacks a captive audience

The morning market is so oversaturated. And people's viewing patterns when they wake up in the morning, it feels like you do the same thing every morning where you may tune into something, click on something, and then that's it. It's hard to get that captive audience there in the morning that isn't already paying attention to something else.

This is a subjective assessment of media trends and audience behavior that aligns with the general shift away from linear morning television.

I left ESPN because I hit a wall and wasn't getting any better at the 6 o'clock SportsCenter

That's one of the reasons why I left ESPN. I wasn't enjoying the 6 o'clock sports center the last three years. I just thought, man, I hit a wall. I wouldn't get any better. I remember saying to my wife, I'm just not getting better. And she goes, yeah, but you're the only one that knows. I said, but that's not the only one that matters.

Tom Brady would have retired if the Patriots had beaten the Eagles in the Super Bowl

If they had won the Super Bowl this year [Super Bowl LII], I believe he retired. Because I think when Gisele said that to the CBS Morning Show, she wasn't provoked to talk about his concussions. She was putting the pressure on him, I think, to say, Tommy's had concussions. He's not going to listen to me, but maybe he'll listen to somebody else.

Since the Patriots lost, we cannot know for sure, but given Brady played 5 more seasons including another win with the Pats, it's unlikely a win would have made him quit.

The Patriots only traded Jimmy Garoppolo because Tom Brady forced them to

It doesn't make sense what happened in New England. If you tell me that that organization all of a sudden said, we're not trading Garoppolo. You can't have Garoppolo. Then all of a sudden you could have Garoppolo for a second-round draft pick. It doesn't make sense. And then, you know, so Brady, if he's pushing them to say, look, I'm not retiring here. Get rid of the kid. It feels like now Brady's indebted to them a little bit because they did what it felt like he asked them to do.

Widely reported but never officially confirmed as a 'mandate' from Brady.

I would take five LeBrons over five Michael Jordans in a prime matchup

[Big Cat]: Five MJs, five LeBrons. Who you got? Both in their prime. [Dan Patrick]: I'll take five LeBrons. LeBron's going to be as accomplished. The fact he went to eight straight NBA finals.

Unverifiable hypothetical.

Pete Rose belongs in the Baseball Hall of Fame as a player

As a baseball player, put him in the Hall of Fame. Don't let him hold a job. That's it. If you cheat in grad school, I don't take away from your undergrad degree. And that's the way I look at it with Pete. He did something wrong as a manager. Now, if you can prove he bet as a player, then I wouldn't put him in the Hall of Fame.

Pete Rose remains banned from the Hall of Fame as of 2024, despite widespread public support for his induction.

I would have easily beaten Skip Bayless in a game of one-on-one basketball

[Skip Bayless] is in good shape. But if we're shooting, then I would steal his lunch money. I would have lit up Skip Bayless.

This matchup never happened and likely never will, making it impossible to verify.

Chris Berman was the greatest highlight broadcaster in history and the foundation of ESPN

[Chris] Berman was the best highlight guy at what he did when he did it. It was revolutionary, controversial, and the fact that he had the guts to do it and continue to do it. You can't build ESPN without him.

I will likely retire from the radio show within the next five years

Three or four. Five, maybe. Maybe five. I don't know. Maybe six. No. No more than five more years.

Incorrect. Patrick did not retire within five years; as of 2024, he is still actively hosting The Dan Patrick Show and recently signed a multi-year extension.
