Dan Patrick on NFL History and Retirement, Lions Stun Chiefs, and Week 1 Picks
Football is officially back and the Detroit Lions did the unthinkable by walking into Arrowhead on banner night and ruining the party for the defending champs. Big Cat and PFT were riding high on the Jared Goff hype train, especially after watching Kadarius Toney put together a performance that looked more like a cry for help than a professional wide receiver outing.
The Chiefs would have won the season opener against the Lions if Kadarius Toney didn't play
I actually think the Chiefs would've won that game without Kadarius Toney. He gave them an a pick six. He then dropped that ball at the end of the game where it was just easily catchable. He dropped that third down conversion when the guy ran across his face. If you just take him away and just have someone run routes but never get the ball, you win that game.
While Toney was busy gifting pick-sixes, the real concern in Kansas City might actually be the guy calling the plays. With Eric Bieniemy gone to D.C., the guys noticed some classic Matt Nagy tendencies creeping back into the Chiefs' offense at the worst possible moments.
Matt Nagy is a major problem for the Kansas City Chiefs offense
I have one thing that Chiefs fans need to be worried about. It's one name and his name's Matt Nagy. Eric Bieniemy is no longer with the Chiefs and Chiefs fans, you saw Matt Nagy in all his glory on that third and two when they got so cute. That was a Nagy special. The idiocy of taking the ball outta Patrick Mahomes' hands on a third and two is mind blowing.
Week 1 Preview and the Quest for 13 Wins
The guys moved through the entire Sunday slate, breaking down everything from the battle of Ohio to the debut of Bryce Young. PFT is fully bought into the Washington Commanders' new era, specifically believing Sam Howell is the guy to lead them to a Week 1 victory over a Cardinals team that seems to be in a race for the bottom.
I think Sam Howell will be a good quarterback for the Commanders this season
I think that Sam Howell is giving us every reason to think that he could be a good quarterback this year. Now he might suck ass... but I don't think he's gonna suck enough ass to not beat the Cardinals by seven points.
Speaking of teams with high expectations, PFT is officially putting the rest of the league on notice regarding the Jacksonville Jaguars. While Trevor Lawrence's road record might be shaky, the belief in the Duval turnaround is stronger than ever.
The Jaguars will win at least 13 games this season
Jaguar's minimum 13 wins... disaster if they don't... Trevor Lawrence is four and 14 straight up and seven 11 against the spread on the road. I know this sounds stupid about Trevor Lawrence, but I believe in these things.
Big Cat, meanwhile, is entering Sunday with a heavy heart and a lot of anxiety. He’s already admitted that the upcoming Packers-Bears game is essentially the most important moment in the history of his existence as a fan, and he's not handling it with any level of chill.
The Week 1 Packers vs. Bears game is the biggest game in the history of the Bears franchise
I have said this on many platforms, but I do, it's a slightly hyperbolic, but I do think that this might be the biggest game in Bears franchise history. It feels so significant because it is the Packers, because it's Jordan Love's first real season, Justin Fields, big season hopefully coming up.
Dan Patrick: Hair, History, and Spicy Takes
The legendary Dan Patrick joined the show to discuss his new book, *The Occasionally Accurate Annals of Football*. The interview quickly shifted from football history to the important stuff: Dan’s four-year retirement tour, his acting career in Adam Sandler movies, and the glory years of his hair in the mid-nineties. Dan didn't hold back on the current state of the NFL either, offering a take on the Dolphins' quarterback situation that might get him blocked by the entire city of Miami.
Mike White will win more games as the Dolphins starter this year than Tua Tagovailoa
My spiciest NFL take is Mike White will win more games for the Dolphins than Tua Tagovailoa. I just did this the other day. I'm rooting for him [Tua]... I'll take that back. No, I'll stand by it.
He also shared some incredible stories about almost being punched by Alex Rodriguez and getting the "death stare" from Lawrence Taylor during his CNN days. When the guys pressed him on a spicy retirement theory for a certain AFC East team, Dan threw a massive curveball that would break the internet if it ever came true.
Tom Brady will come out of retirement to play for the New York Jets
Tom Brady comes out of retirement. And he comes out of retirement to play for the Jets.
Fantasy Fuccbois and Fyre Fest
Fantasy Fuccbois returned with the usual chaos, featuring Mikey Rigatoni, Sylvia Scon, and Berino Totino. The advice was predictably questionable, but the energy was high as we head into the first real Sunday of the year.
We wrapped up with Fyre Fest of the week, where Hank revealed he just learned that cows and bulls are the same species, a discovery that clearly rocked his world after a long week of post-bachelor party recovery. PFT also shared the struggle of losing his wallet on a plane after having a few too many "God moment" cocktails.
If the Bears lose to Jordan Love on Sunday, please check on Big Cat because he might not make it to Monday.
