Dan Patrick, Lions Beat The Chiefs, Week 1 Picks & Preview, Fantasy F-Bois And Fyre Fest Of The Week

Friday, September 8, 202321 takes

Football is back and the Lions walked into Kansas City and beat the Chiefs. Kadarius Toney had a night he will hopefully forget and Matt Nagy may be a problem (-). Week 1 picks and preview for every game on Sunday plus Fantasy Fuccbois (-). We then welcome on our good friend Dan Patrick who wrote a new book and talk to him about the best year for his hair, retiring in 4 years, competition at ESPN and tons more (-). We finish with Jake's report on Obama's potential hook up (-) and fyre fest of the week (-).

Dan Patrick on NFL History and Retirement, Lions Stun Chiefs, and Week 1 Picks

Football is officially back and the Detroit Lions did the unthinkable by walking into Arrowhead on banner night and ruining the party for the defending champs. Big Cat and PFT were riding high on the Jared Goff hype train, especially after watching Kadarius Toney put together a performance that looked more like a cry for help than a professional wide receiver outing.

The Chiefs would have won the season opener against the Lions if Kadarius Toney didn't play

I actually think the Chiefs would've won that game without Kadarius Toney. He gave them an a pick six. He then dropped that ball at the end of the game where it was just easily catchable. He dropped that third down conversion when the guy ran across his face. If you just take him away and just have someone run routes but never get the ball, you win that game.

The Chiefs lost 21-20 and Toney's drops were directly responsible for a 7-point swing on the pick-six and multiple stalled drives. It is statistically very likely the Chiefs win without those specific errors.

While Toney was busy gifting pick-sixes, the real concern in Kansas City might actually be the guy calling the plays. With Eric Bieniemy gone to D.C., the guys noticed some classic Matt Nagy tendencies creeping back into the Chiefs' offense at the worst possible moments.

Matt Nagy is a major problem for the Kansas City Chiefs offense

I have one thing that Chiefs fans need to be worried about. It's one name and his name's Matt Nagy. Eric Bieniemy is no longer with the Chiefs and Chiefs fans, you saw Matt Nagy in all his glory on that third and two when they got so cute. That was a Nagy special. The idiocy of taking the ball outta Patrick Mahomes' hands on a third and two is mind blowing.

While the Chiefs offense struggled at times in 2023, they ultimately won Super Bowl LVIII. Nagy remained the OC, so 'major problem' proved hyperbolic.

Week 1 Preview and the Quest for 13 Wins

The guys moved through the entire Sunday slate, breaking down everything from the battle of Ohio to the debut of Bryce Young. PFT is fully bought into the Washington Commanders' new era, specifically believing Sam Howell is the guy to lead them to a Week 1 victory over a Cardinals team that seems to be in a race for the bottom.

I think Sam Howell will be a good quarterback for the Commanders this season

I think that Sam Howell is giving us every reason to think that he could be a good quarterback this year. Now he might suck ass... but I don't think he's gonna suck enough ass to not beat the Cardinals by seven points.

Sam Howell struggled significantly, leading the league in interceptions and sacks taken, and was eventually benched as the Commanders finished 4-13.

Speaking of teams with high expectations, PFT is officially putting the rest of the league on notice regarding the Jacksonville Jaguars. While Trevor Lawrence's road record might be shaky, the belief in the Duval turnaround is stronger than ever.

The Jaguars will win at least 13 games this season

Jaguar's minimum 13 wins... disaster if they don't... Trevor Lawrence is four and 14 straight up and seven 11 against the spread on the road. I know this sounds stupid about Trevor Lawrence, but I believe in these things.

The Jaguars finished the season 9-8 and missed the playoffs entirely after a late-season collapse.

Big Cat, meanwhile, is entering Sunday with a heavy heart and a lot of anxiety. He’s already admitted that the upcoming Packers-Bears game is essentially the most important moment in the history of his existence as a fan, and he's not handling it with any level of chill.

The Week 1 Packers vs. Bears game is the biggest game in the history of the Bears franchise

I have said this on many platforms, but I do, it's a slightly hyperbolic, but I do think that this might be the biggest game in Bears franchise history. It feels so significant because it is the Packers, because it's Jordan Love's first real season, Justin Fields, big season hopefully coming up.

The Bears lost the game 38-20, and the season ultimately led to them picking #1 overall again. While symbolically important, it wasn't even the biggest game of that decade for them in hindsight.

Dan Patrick: Hair, History, and Spicy Takes

The legendary Dan Patrick joined the show to discuss his new book, *The Occasionally Accurate Annals of Football*. The interview quickly shifted from football history to the important stuff: Dan’s four-year retirement tour, his acting career in Adam Sandler movies, and the glory years of his hair in the mid-nineties. Dan didn't hold back on the current state of the NFL either, offering a take on the Dolphins' quarterback situation that might get him blocked by the entire city of Miami.

Mike White will win more games as the Dolphins starter this year than Tua Tagovailoa

My spiciest NFL take is Mike White will win more games for the Dolphins than Tua Tagovailoa. I just did this the other day. I'm rooting for him [Tua]... I'll take that back. No, I'll stand by it.

Tua Tagovailoa started all 17 games for the Dolphins in 2023, leading them to 11 wins. Mike White played in only 6 games and did not start or win a game. This was spectacularly wrong.

He also shared some incredible stories about almost being punched by Alex Rodriguez and getting the "death stare" from Lawrence Taylor during his CNN days. When the guys pressed him on a spicy retirement theory for a certain AFC East team, Dan threw a massive curveball that would break the internet if it ever came true.

Tom Brady will come out of retirement to play for the New York Jets

Tom Brady comes out of retirement. And he comes out of retirement to play for the Jets.

Tom Brady remained retired throughout the 2023 season and beyond. The Jets stuck with Aaron Rodgers (until his injury) and then Zach Wilson.

Fantasy Fuccbois and Fyre Fest

Fantasy Fuccbois returned with the usual chaos, featuring Mikey Rigatoni, Sylvia Scon, and Berino Totino. The advice was predictably questionable, but the energy was high as we head into the first real Sunday of the year.

We wrapped up with Fyre Fest of the week, where Hank revealed he just learned that cows and bulls are the same species, a discovery that clearly rocked his world after a long week of post-bachelor party recovery. PFT also shared the struggle of losing his wallet on a plane after having a few too many "God moment" cocktails.

If the Bears lose to Jordan Love on Sunday, please check on Big Cat because he might not make it to Monday.

Eric Bieniemy was the 'system' for the Chiefs and now that he's in Washington, Patrick Mahomes will be exposed

Is Patrick Mahomes a system quarterback? Was Eric Bieniemy the system? Do I now have the system? Is the system belong to me now? All your system belongs to us.

Mahomes won the Super Bowl without Bieniemy, while Bieniemy was fired after one season in Washington as the offense struggled.

Kadarius Toney will be removed from the Chiefs roster by mid-season after a blow-up with Patrick Mahomes

What's gonna happen is he's gonna have another bad performance... he's going to get mad at Mahomes for not throwing the ball anymore. and then by week nine, he's going to get disciplined by the team for yelling at Mahomes... and then he's gonna get traded, cut, removed from the team.

Toney was not cut or traded mid-season, but he was effectively removed from the lineup late in the season and was inactive for the playoffs and Super Bowl following a series of controversies.

Joe Burrow will be rusty and struggle in Week 1 against the Browns

Joe Burrow misses half of training camp again. What happened last year? He threw four picks against the Steelers and lost in overtime. I feel like he's gonna be rusty again. I think the Bengals will be there long term. But I think this is a tough spot for the Bengals Week one with Joe Burrow coming back from not practicing at all.

The Bengals lost 24-3 to the Browns in Week 1, and Burrow had one of the worst games of his career (82 yards passing). The take was exactly correct.

Deshaun Watson is the perfect quarterback for the Browns because his off-field issues prevent the media from over-hyping the team

Deshaun Watson, everything off the field, I think he's the perfect quarterback for, for the Browns... because a lot of people don't wanna talk about the Browns 'cause of Deshaun Watson. So it tempers the Browns hype. And the Browns are one of those teams I put in the category of like never overhype the Browns.

The Browns did fly under the radar for much of the season and made the playoffs, though Watson was injured for much of it.

This is a legacy-defining season for Kyle Shanahan where he must win the Super Bowl

I'm ready to say it. I think this is a legacy year for Kyle Shanahan. I think he has to win the Super Bowl or else his pristine championship pedigree has been tarnished. If he wins the Super Bowl, he will be the number one coach in the NFL. This is a legacy defining season for him.

Shanahan reached the Super Bowl but lost in overtime to the Chiefs. His legacy remains that of a coach who can get there but struggles to close, reinforcing Big Cat's 'legacy defining' framing.

The Ravens will demolish the Texans in Week 1

Texans, Ravens. So Ravens are going to demolish the Texans. I probably agree with that... I am Stroud boy... but yeah, Ravens throwing the ball down field. Yes.

The Ravens beat the Texans 25-9 in Week 1.

Justin Fields will have a better NFL career than Trevor Lawrence

I think [Justin Fields] is gonna be better. He's gonna have a better career than Trevor Lawrence. I'm gonna stand by that commitment. I said it for my balls one time last year. Not for my brain, but sometimes I'm fielding my feelings right now and it's coming from my balls.

Justin Fields was traded to the Steelers after the 2023 season to be a backup/competitor after the Bears moved on. Trevor Lawrence signed a massive extension with the Jaguars. Unless Fields has a massive resurgence, this is incorrect.

The Chargers will be a good team for the first four games of the season before they get hit with injuries

The C words [Chargers] are actually healthy right now... I kind of believe in them in the first four games of this season... that's usually you can set your watch to it. That's when they usually have their first debilitating injury of the year to an impact player.

The Chargers went 2-2 to start the season and did indeed suffer a major injury to Mike Williams in Week 3.

The Rams will be so bad this season that they will have a top-five draft pick

I actually think the Rams are gonna be really, really bad. Cooper Kupp obviously out. I feel like Matthew Stafford... I don't know what to expect. They're resetting the whole deck. I actually think, and quote me if I'm wrong, I believe that next year, come late April, the Los Angeles Rams will be selecting in the first round... maybe a little top five pick.

The Rams exceeded expectations, finishing 10-7 and making the playoffs. They did not have a top-five pick; they picked 19th.

The New England Patriots will win 11 games this season

I have high expectations for this team. But the national media like yourself think they have no shot. I think they'll win 11. 11 [wins] and seven [losses].

The Patriots finished the season 4-13. This was one of the worst predictions in the show's history.

If Dan Marino played in today's NFL, he would pass for 6,000 yards in a season

Marino changed the game. Marino in today's game, he'd approach 6,000 yards probably. He'd throw for 50 [touchdowns] because that wasn't the difficulty for him. He was doing that before. And he is convincing Don Shula a defensive minded head coach to let him throw the ball as much as he wants.

This is a hypothetical 'what if' that cannot be proven, making it inherently subjective.

Dak Prescott will throw so many interceptions in the first month of the season that he will decide to retire from football

Dak Prescott retires from throwing too many interceptions... he retires this year. He throws so many interceptions in the first month of the season. He is like, I can't, I'm so bad at football. I'm retiring.

Dak Prescott had one of his best seasons, throwing for 36 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions, finishing 2nd in MVP voting.

Kirk Cousins will win at least one or two playoff games this season

I actually think this is the year for Kirk Cousins. I think he wins one, maybe two playoff games. I'm backing on him. I I'm like a pendulum with Kirk... I saw him on that show 'Quarterback' and he's just the nicest person in the world.

Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles in Week 8 and the Vikings missed the playoffs, making playoff wins impossible.

Trey Lance is not a better quarterback than Cooper Rush

But Trey Lance isn't better than Cooper Rush. [Big Cat: I don't know.] No. You think? No.

Trey Lance never played a snap for the Cowboys in 2023, serving as the emergency third QB while Rush remained the primary backup, suggesting the team agreed with the assessment.
