The 2025 NFL Draft class is full of starters but lacks true star power

I've just been saying it's starters not stars... last year we had six quarterbacks... and this year when you've got, you know, Cam Ward seems locked in at one, Travis Hunter seems locked in at two... there's not really that juice there at the top.

This is a long-term assessment of a draft class.

Jackson Dart's career trajectory and play style is similar to Jalen Hurts

To me, [Jackson] Dart, my comp on him was kind of off the walls... but he reminded me of Jalen Hurts. Just from the standpoint of they kind of built similarly. They're like strong, sturdy, tough guys. They got better each and every year in college. I think you're kind of buying into the kid and the competitiveness.

A scouting comparison is inherently an opinion and can only be judged by the long-term success of Dart's career.

Trayveon Henderson is arguably the best pass-protecting running back to come out of college in decades

Trayveon Henderson for me from Ohio State... he's arguably, and I have to go back through my notes like from way back in the early 2000s, I don't recall off the top of my head a better past protecting back coming out of college. Like he's unbelievable at it.

Pass protection quality is subjective but verifiable through NFL performance metrics over time.

Travis Hunter will be more impactful as a Wide Receiver than a Cornerback in the NFL

I think everybody I've talked to has a plan to major in minor... I think he's ready, he's more impactful as a receiver right now. And so I, to me, I think that's where you start him... I think he is right now ready to go. There's a ton of ways we can get the ball in his hands and I just think he impacts the game more on offense.

Travis Hunter was drafted #2 by the Jaguars and played both ways, but primarily on offense in his debut. He played 44 of 63 offensive snaps vs 6 defensive snaps in his first game, suggesting the Jaguars prioritized his WR role, supporting this prediction.

Colston Loveland to the Chargers is a near-lock for Jim Harbaugh

I think every night [Jim Harbaugh] is going to bed with Colston Loveland's picture, like on the wall and he just stares at it and is like, this is going to happen. I believe it. He will be here.

Colston Loveland was drafted by the Chicago Bears with the #10 overall pick, not the Los Angeles Chargers.

Dylan Gabriel is the 'Mr. PMT' sleeper quarterback of the draft

I would go with Dylan Gabriel... he's five 11, he's older, but he's got a, he's got a really strong arm. I've kind of advocated if you're the Dolphins and I know they brought over Zach Wilson. Yeah, but that'd be a, I mean, shoot, just bring him in there. If you can get him in the third, fourth round, knowing Tua is more than likely to miss some games.

Dillon Gabriel was indeed drafted by the Browns in the 3rd round (#94 overall), making him a notable later-round QB pick. However, calling him a 'sleeper' is subjective, and the Dolphins connection didn't happen.

Michael Penix Jr. could be drafted before JJ McCarthy

I was sniffing around this morning 'cause I had, there's so much stuff flying around and like one of the teams had told me like, 'Hey, I wouldn't be surprised if when it was all said and done if Penix went over McCarthy.'

Penix Jr. was drafted 8th by the Falcons; McCarthy was drafted 10th by the Vikings.

The Bears should prioritize drafting another offensive stud at pick #9 over defense

When you take the quarterback number one, every decision is about making sure that pick looks right. I'd rather have one too many studs on offense and worry about fixing maybe some of the other holes on defense. Their defense was good after the Sweat trade last year. To me, I'd rather just go get a tackle or go get Rome Odunze.

The Bears did exactly this, drafting WR Rome Odunze at #9 to support Caleb Williams.

The 2024 draft class has 10-12 second-contract caliber wide receivers

I was strict with it. So you can, you can extrapolate this beyond this, but like a con—like my confidence level's high. Wide receivers, 10 to 12 of them. Wow. Like there's 10 to 12 that I feel pretty confident they're gonna, they're second contract, same team, commit to 'em type players.

Too early to tell; second contracts for the 2024 class won't happen until 2028.

Zay Flowers will be the first wide receiver drafted

I think Zay Flowers from Boston College can be the first receiver picked ahead of Jackson Smith-Njigba, which I think would surprise a lot of people.

Jackson Smith-Njigba was the first WR taken (#20), followed by Quentin Johnston (#21) and Zay Flowers (#22).

The Houston Texans will draft CJ Stroud with the second pick

The quarterback thing. I feel like Rice [Young] is going one and then after that... I'm just gonna kind of trust my gut and go back to what makes the most logical sense. And I'm just gonna put Stroud to Houston [at #2].

The Texans selected CJ Stroud at #2.

Big 10 offensive linemen with over 40 starts are incredibly safe NFL prospects

If you get offensive linemen that started in the Big 10 for like 40 games, they might not ever be a great NFL player, but they're gonna play because they're all gonna be smart and tough and you can play with them.

The Big 10 continues to be a primary pipeline for reliable NFL offensive line starters.

The New England Patriots will trade back from the 14th pick

Belichick loves to just trade back and accumulate fifth rounders. I don't think that they're gonna pick at 14.

The Patriots traded down from 14 to 17 with the Steelers.

Kenny Pickett will have a career similar to Alex Smith or Ryan Tannehill

I think Pickett feels like, I feel like he's got a high, a high floor. He's kind of like, if you're looking at what he can be, I think of a guy like Alex Smith, the career that he had, I could see Pickett having that type of a career. You know, Tannehill, Alex Smith.

Pickett struggled significantly in Pittsburgh and was traded to the Eagles as a backup after two seasons, currently tracking well below the careers of Pro Bowlers like Smith and Tannehill.

The Saints will not draft a quarterback in the first round

I don't think New Orleans is taking one [a QB]. I know they acquired the extra first round pick, but everything I've kind of heard you go out and you sign Andy Dalton and you've already got Jameis. Like you're going to end up probably having to release one of those guys. If you draft a quarterback, she probably not going to carry three. So that, that doesn't make as much sense for them.

The Saints drafted Chris Olave and Trevor Penning in the first round; they did not take a QB.

Aidan Hutchinson is the best player in the 2022 NFL Draft

I just keep going back to the fact like you just got off the Urban Meyer rollercoaster, like let's just take, take Aidan Hutchinson, just put it right in the middle of the fairway here. ... I think he's the best player in the draft personally.

While subjective, Hutchinson won Defensive Rookie of the Year and has been a Pro Bowl-caliber player, arguably the most productive from that class early on.

Alabama's Will Anderson Jr. is way better than any defensive end in the 2022 draft

I can tell you after having done this for 20 years, that the defensive man from Alabama [Will Anderson] is an absolute freak show. And he's way better than anybody in this draft class. Not even close, he just jumps off the screen.

Will Anderson Jr. went #3 overall in 2023 and won Defensive Rookie of the Year, widely regarded as a superior prospect to 2022's #1 pick Travon Walker.

Garrett Wilson is the best wide receiver in the 2022 class

I love Garrett Wilson from Ohio State. I just think he does everything... he's one of those guys. You can play him outside. You can play him inside. He's got real speed... and he plays that way, but he's strong. To me he's my top guy.

Wilson won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2022, validating DJ's assessment of him as the premier talent in the class.

Baker Mayfield will be traded by the end of draft weekend

I'm going to say that actually, I'm going to say Baker does. I'm going to say Baker does [get traded]. I could see Baker and Carolina for a pick next year though, that that wouldn't surprise me.

Mayfield was not traded during the draft; he was traded to the Panthers on July 6, 2022.

NFL Draft Quarterback rankings: Lawrence, Wilson, Lance, Fields, then Jones

I have Lawrence, then I have Wilson. And then to me, those are pretty distinct. I have Lawrence clearly one, Wilson clearly two. I think it's a really good discussion between Lance and Fields... I have Trey Lance over fields just with the decision-making... And then I have Mac Jones behind them.

This matches the draft order for the first two (Lawrence 1, Wilson 2) and the third QB taken (Lance 3), though Fields and Jones' pro careers have been mixed.

I would take Sam Darnold over both Trey Lance and Justin Fields.

If I stacked Sam Darnold in with this class, I would go Trevor, I would take Zach, and then it would be Sam. I would take Sam over Lance and Fields. People are like, you're crazy. I'm like, dude, he's 23 years old. I loved him coming out of USC. I still think he's really good.

While Lance and Fields struggled, the draft capital and initial upside seen in them far exceeded Darnold's value at that time.

Kellen Mond will likely be a second or third-round pick.

I like Kellen Mond as like a second, third-round pick, but according to your intern, he's long gone by that.

Mond was selected in the third round (66th overall) by the Minnesota Vikings.

There is a 60% chance DeVonta Smith is drafted outside of the top ten.

I think it's probably 60-40 in his favor that he doesn't go top 10. But still, you're very much in the game. Detroit, that's your spot.

Smith was drafted exactly 10th overall by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jameen Davis will be a late first round pick and is an explosive stud

I'll say Jameen Davis, the linebacker from Kentucky, is like one of my favorite players in the draft. So he'll probably go late first, but he's a stud, man. Like he is so explosive and he can really cover. So linebackers like that that can cover these tight ends, like there's tremendous value.

Jameen Davis was indeed drafted in the first round (19th overall) by the Washington Commanders, validating the 'late first' prediction.

Penei Sewell is not a surefire Hall of Famer and I would take several 2020 tackles over him

I think Penei Sewell is a really good player, but I don't think he's kind of the Hall of Fame level player that he's been described as. I'm a little bit on an island from a media standpoint, but I know there's a lot of teams that feel that way. I like him. I like Slater better than him... the top three tackles last year for me were Becton, Wirfs, and Wills. Those three guys, I would take them over Penei.

Penei Sewell became an All-Pro and one of the best tackles in the league almost immediately, while some of the 2020 tackles (Becton) have struggled with injuries.

Tua Tagovailoa is a much better player than Justin Herbert

I have [Tua Tagovailoa] as a much better player than [Justin] Herbert... when you start hearing those things that it's kind of up in the air, I'm like, okay, well, maybe the health thing... but I don't think it's close.

While both are successful starters, Justin Herbert won Offensive Rookie of the Year and is generally regarded as having the higher ceiling and better statistical production than Tua.

Tua Tagovailoa is a significantly better quarterback than Dwayne Haskins or Kyle Allen

I think if [Tua Tagovailoa] was totally healthy, no concerns, I would be standing on the soapbox and just take him. Like, he's much better than Dwayne Haskins. He's much better than Kyle Allen. Just take Tua.

Tua has had a successful career as a franchise starter, whereas Haskins struggled and was released by Washington, and Allen remained a journeyman backup.

Jordan Love should sit behind a veteran like Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees for a few years

If you're going to script it, it's [Jordan Love] goes to Green Bay, sit behind [Aaron] Rogers. Go to New Orleans, sit behind Drew Brees. Like, those are good offensive coaches and they have time to develop there. That's why it makes some sense for him.

This exact scenario played out; Love was drafted by the Packers and sat behind Rodgers for three years, which many credit for his eventual success.

I would stake my reputation on Kenneth Murray being a successful NFL player

I'll give you one that I would take a pay cut for... linebacker Kenneth Murray from Oklahoma is just going to be a really, really good player. His wiring and intelligence, competitiveness, all that stuff—off the charts. He's just got too many things lined up for him not to be successful.

Murray was a first-round pick and has been a consistent starter in the NFL, though he hasn't reached elite All-Pro status. Jeremiah's prediction of him being 'really, really good' is generally correct.
