The Houston Astros robbed the Yankees of a World Series title

I know that my Yankees got robbed. Then there's probably a lot of other teams that got robbed right? I mean, it's out there... Altuve got MVP when it should have been Judge. Yes extra Stripes. Yeah, I mean there's a lot of things that people have to you know, they've lost focus on.

The sign-stealing scandal was confirmed by MLB, but whether it 'robbed' them of the title is a matter of debate.

Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame

I still go back to the Pete Rose, you know saying I know it was he wrong? Yes, but how is he not? You know saying in in the Hall of Fame, right?

Inherently subjective debate regarding Hall of Fame entry requirements.

Aaron Judge hasn't earned his Yankee Pinstripes yet because he hasn't won a World Series

He hasn't played a game [with Pinstripes]... he should have won a championship... You have to win a World Series [to earn them].

This is a traditionalist opinion on team legacy and individual honors.

Coaches should never have anyone else call for a job for them

I was always brought up to that if I wanted a job, I would never have anyone else call for me. I would always call myself. ... If any other coach would have recommended Sean [McVay], I think he would have had a chance.

Blake Bortles will play in the NFL for a long time

I have a ton of respect for him. ... I wish him the best. I think that he'll do well. I really do. I think he'll play in this league for a long time. I think he'll get another opportunity.

Blake Bortles only appeared in 3 more NFL games (all as a backup for the Rams in 2019) and started zero games for the rest of his career before retiring in 2022.

NFL head coaches are fighting to keep their jobs every single day they go to work

I approach it this way. I'm fighting to keep my job every single day. So every time I go into work, I'm trying to prove that I'm worthy of a job. And every time we're playing a game, I'm trying to prove that I'm worthy.

This is Marrone's personal professional philosophy.

Grit is defined by being relentless and having maniacal work habits

For me it's it's very simple and we talk to our players about all time it's about being relentless. We talk about intensity. We talk about maniacal work habits and going about it, determination, teamwork, all those things, toughness, hardness about ourselves. Those are the things that we describe grit to.

Subjective definition of a personality trait.

You can hear grit on a football field without seeing it

I think a lot of it for me is really what I hear, meaning when the practice starts and the pads are on, I can hear grit without actually having to see it. And sometimes during the nine-on-seven drills... I'll just kind of close my eyes and listen, you know and say okay was that a good play for grit? Was that a good toughness play?

Subjective coaching philosophy.

True team chemistry is built through shared suffering and relentless work, not group activities like bowling

Chemistry comes in my mind is when you know you're working so hard and I don't think I can take another rep... They're so focused on being pissed off at me, they can't be pissed off at each other. That builds a type of chemistry.

Subjective coaching philosophy.

I have eaten more bologna than anyone else in the world

I really believe that, at least at my age. I can say that for sure. No one can beat me in the bologna [eating competition].

Impossible to verify globally, but his commitment to the claim is legendary.

Bologna is the ultimate comfort food and survival food

Whenever I want to feel good, I eat bologna. If someone said, what's the one food you're bringing in that bunker? Simple: Bologna. Because it can turn into so many other meals... I fry it... Once I fry it, I kill all that bacteria and I still got a great meal.

This is a subjective food preference that Marrone has maintained publicly for years.

A football team can never lose if they run the ball every single time

I've never seen a team lose a game of football if they ran the ball every single time. I haven't seen that either... If we can be successful running the football... the fans know we're running it, the opposing team knows we're running it, we're running this ball and we're going to get positive yards.

Teams that run 100% of the time (like certain triple-option college teams) frequently lose; in the NFL, it would be impossible to win without some passing threat. However, in the context of 'unbeatable physical dominance,' it's a rhetorical point.

Ron Rivera and Mike Vrabel are the toughest coaches in the NFL

Mike Vrabel is probably the toughest. Ron Rivera is a tough son. Ron Rivera is a good one. To be a coach in this profession, you have to have a toughness about you in some way or another.

Rivera and Vrabel are widely regarded as being among the 'toughest' former players turned coaches.

The biggest mistake a successful team can make is assuming they will be back in the same position next year

The biggest fault you can have is to think, 'Hey, listen, this is going to be every year. We're going to be back here.' That's the number one mistake you can make.

The 2018 Jaguars famously collapsed to 5-11 after their AFC Championship run, making this take very prescient.
