Joel Klatt on the CFP, NFL Week 11 Preview, and the Jets' Disaster
The New England Patriots are officially rolling after a Thursday night win over the New York Jets, and the vibes in the room are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Hank is riding high on an eight-game win streak while Memes is digging through the wreckage of another Jets disaster. The conversation quickly turned to Justin Fields and whether he actually has a future as a starter in this league after another fumbling display. Big Cat isn't buying the hype anymore.
Justin Fields is not a viable starting quarterback in the NFL
Until you have [Justin Fields] on your team, you can't fully, in theory, he's got everything. But then you watch him and you're like, okay, there's something. It's just, it's just not there the way it needs to be for a starter in the NFL.
PFT also floated a theory that Josh McDaniels might actually be the ultimate retread candidate because of his success as a coordinator, despite the head coaching failures.
Josh McDaniels deserves more respect as an offensive coordinator and will eventually get a third shot as a head coach
I think Josh McDaniels, he needs more respect. I've been saying that he's, he is a great offensive coordinator and we definitely, we whiffed on Wednesday's show when we talk about retread head coaches... McDaniels is, he is that guy that got the second shot, he's gonna get another shot.
NFL Week 11 Picks and Preview
It is Rivalry Week in the NFL, and the guys are looking at a slate filled with divisional implications. The overseas action wraps up in Spain with the Commanders taking on the Dolphins. PFT is actually finding reasons to be optimistic about Washington now that Dan Quinn has taken over the defensive play-calling duties.
The Commanders defense will be energized and more competitive with Dan Quinn taking over defensive play-calling
I actually liked the Commanders this weekend... Because we've got Dan Quinn taking over defensive play calling. I don't think he's gonna be a difference maker enough to make the defense good, but I don't think they're gonna be historically bad like they've been in the past month. And also, if you have an embarrassing performance overseas, that's when a coach can get fired.
On the other side of that matchup, the Dolphins are trying to claw their way back into some semblance of respectability. While the season might be lost, PFT thinks Mike McDaniel is doing enough to at least secure his office for another year.
The Dolphins will eventually play well enough that Mike McDaniel keeps his job for next season
I do think that it's a possibility that they play well enough where Mike McDaniel's the coach going in next year.
Looking at the rest of the slate, the weather in Buffalo is becoming a major factor for the Buccaneers. PFT is fading the Florida team based purely on the forecast, convinced that the cold and drizzle will be the Bucs' undoing.
The Buccaneers cannot win in Buffalo because the weather is too cold and drizzly
This is gonna be a weather play for me. I'm making my play on this game strictly based on the weather forecast. I think it's gonna be in the thirties, maybe around 40, a little drizzly. The [Buccaneers] can't win that game. It's too cold.
Joel Klatt In Studio
Joel Klatt joined Big Cat and PFT to talk about why we are currently living in the golden age of college football. Between nIL stabilization and the expanded playoff, the stakes have never been higher. Klatt shared some incredible stories from his minor league baseball days, including a hilarious encounter with Ricky Henderson talking to himself in the third person on the basepaths.
When it comes to the actual gridiron, Klatt is high on the coaching transition at Texas A&M. Big Cat agreed, noting that the Mike Elco hire was the perfect move for a program that needed to stop trying to win the press conference.
Mike Elco is an unbelievable coach and a perfect fit for the Texas A&M job
Texas A&M [is one of the best teams]... they won the press conference with Jimbo Fisher, and then they got a guy, Mike Elco, whoever's like, oh, what dude? Yeah. Okay. He's an unbelievable coach. Not only that, he's a great fit at Texas A&M and understands it.
Klatt also dropped some heat on the college football coaching hierarchy, claiming that LSU is actually a superior job to Alabama when you look at the resources and the recruiting base in Louisiana.
LSU is a top-three job in college football and is better than the Alabama job
I caught a bunch of flack for saying I think LSU is a top three job in college football... I think it's a better job than Alabama... They've got more resources at LSU than there are at Alabama... Alabama doesn't have [boosters like Todd Graves] guys. They don't.
As for the playoff picture, Klatt is fully aboard the Indiana hype train. He thinks the Hoosiers are the specific type of balanced team that can actually give Ohio State real trouble.
Ohio State vs. Indiana is the toughest matchup in the country for the Buckeyes
If I were to say of any team in the country, like what's the toughest matchup for Ohio State? It's Indiana... because they can run the football... Mendoza is also very good... That's gonna make life difficult on what I think is the best defense in college football.
Indiana can win the National Championship this year
I think Indiana is as—I think they can win a national championship. I really do. The, the, my question for them... is health and injury... If they're healthy, they're really good.
Fantasy Minute and Fyre Fest
Jerry O'Connell called in for his Fantasy Minute, which mostly involved him getting a sweat on and insulting Hank for being a walking contagion. JOC is all-in on Joe Flacco finding some magic against his old rivals.
Joe Flacco is a lock to win the double revenge game against the Steelers
We're gonna start Joe Flacco. Rare double revenge game. Baltimore and Joe [Burrow] in the building.
We wrapped things up with Fyre Fest of the week. Hank is still sick and being shamed for coming into the studio and infecting the air supply. Meanwhile, PFT is mourning the end of El Camino season as the snow starts to hit. Max is still dealing with the fallout of his Savannah Bananas pitching appearance, but at least his dog is obsessed with the new Hank pet toy.
