NFL Week 8 Recap, Jets' Emotional Win, and the Brian Kelly Era Ends
Week 8 in the NFL was a day of double-digit blowouts, but it started with an emotional victory for the New York football Jets. In a game dedicated to the memory of the legendary Nick Mangold, the Jets pulled off a 39-38 thriller over the Bengals. Memes was understandably shaken up, both by the loss of a friend of the program and the shock of seeing his team actually win a game.
Big Cat was quick to credit the coaching staff for the turnaround, specifically pointing to the late-game guts of Aaron Glenn. Glenn showed he wasn't afraid to trust the analytics when it mattered most.
Aaron Glenn is an analytically sound 'math guy' head coach
Aaron Glenn first win as an NFL head coach also Math guy... he showed a couple games that he's a math guy. Yeah. The Bucks game. He went for two... He's an analytically sound, but it worked. He was down 14, late in the game in the fourth quarter. Scored a touchdown, went for two, then scored again. Won the game in regulation with an extra point certified math guy.
While the Jets celebrated, the Bengals were left looking for answers after their defense allowed 500 yards of offense. PFT wasn't just disappointed; he was ready to call for a total teardown in Cincinnati.
The Bengals need to blow the whole team up and start over
The Bengals... their defense is so historically bad that they lose games like this. I don't know what else the answer is. They gotta blow the whole thing up.
The Bears Graduate to Mediocrity
In Baltimore, the Bears' winning streak came to a screeching halt. Caleb Williams struggled to find a rhythm, looking frantic in the pocket and missing the intuition that defines elite quarterbacks. Big Cat isn't ready to jump off the Sears Tower yet, but he’s being realistic about where this team currently stands.
The Bears are not a good team yet; they have only graduated from being a bad team
Have I at all said that the Bears were a good team? I have not. I said they were working towards being a good team. They have graduated from being a bad team, but I've never called them a good team. And today is why, because I don't think they're a good team yet.
While Caleb’s "feel" for the game was a major talking point, Big Cat is leaning on the coaching staff to navigate the rookie through these growing pains. He’s placing all his chips on Ben Johnson to be the ultimate judge of Williams’ future.
I have complete faith in Ben Johnson to determine if Caleb Williams is the right quarterback for the Bears
The calmness that I have is all because of Ben Johnson. I believe in Ben Johnson. That's where the calmness comes from. I believe in whatever Ben Johnson's plan is... He will decide if [Caleb Williams] is his guy or not.
Trade Demands and Giant Realities
In Philadelphia, the Eagles handled the Giants with ease, but the drama was largely off the field. AJ Brown apparently spent his Saturday night scrubbing Jalen Hurts from his social media, leading PFT to take up a new cause.
I am officially demanding a trade on behalf of AJ Brown
I side with AJ Brown. Yeah, I do. I do. It sounds like AJ his only crime. He's just too nice of a guy and he won't, he won't demand a trade. So I'll demand it for him. I'm demanding a trade on behalf of AJ Brown. Aj I will speak for you.
Max, however, remained the voice of reason (or pessimism) for the Eagles. Despite the social media drama and the Kelly Green jerseys looking phenomenal, Max is certain AJ isn't going anywhere just because his feelings are hurt.
AJ Brown will remain an Eagle for the entire season despite being unhappy
Yes. He'll be an eagle for this entire, he won't be happy about it, but he will be an eagle... Howie's not going to just eat the, eat the cap because he's upset. He's not going to make this team worse. Just to make AJ Brown's feelings not hurt.
Across the field, the Giants are facing a grim reality after losing Camp Galbo to a season-ending injury. With the playoffs out of reach, PFT thinks the blue side of New York needs to shift its focus entirely.
The Giants' season is now entirely about developing Jackson Dart
I think the Giants are in a position where this season is now fully about just developing Jackson Dart. I think that whatever magic they had... now it's just about making sure that [Jackson Dart] progresses, gets better, learns how to compete, and you can just put all your stock in that.
Contenders and Pretenders
In the afternoon slate, the Colts and Broncos emerged as the biggest winners. The Colts looked like a well-oiled machine, with Jonathan Taylor playing like it’s 2006 and he’s wearing a Chargers jersey. Big Cat is officially ready to crown them the kings of the league.
The Colts are currently the best team in the NFL
The Colts are just the best team in the NFL. I don't really know what else to say. They are the best team in the NFL... it finally was like, you know what, this is not, this is not just a hot start. They're just really fucking good.
Meanwhile, the Broncos dominated the Cowboys in a way that had Sean Payton smiling for once. Bo Nix threw four touchdowns, and the Broncos looked like a legitimate threat in the AFC, provided their star cornerback stays on the field.
The Broncos are genuine AFC Championship contenders if Patrick Surtain II stays healthy
I think the Broncos are every bit of a AFC champion contender in my mind. If their defense, especially [Patrick Surtain II] is healthy.
On the flip side, Big Cat has officially seen enough of the Atlanta Falcons. After a 34-10 shellacking at the hands of the visor-wearing Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins, the Falcons have been moved to the "do not trust" list.
I am done taking the Falcons seriously as a team
I'm done with the Falcons hashtag done. I can't take them as serious team after this game. I'm sorry. I wanted to believe in them this year... you can't lose by 34 10 to the Miami Dolphins who are reeling... and then they come into your house and just bully you.
Who's Back and College Chaos
The biggest news of the night came from the college ranks, as Brian Kelly was fired at LSU following a sideline meltdown against Texas A&M. The guys marveled at the $54 million buyout, which adds to a historic run of buyouts negotiated by LSU's AD. While Kelly is a polarizing figure, Big Cat admitted he’d swallow his pride for the sake of his alma mater.
I would be fine with Brian Kelly coaching the Wisconsin Badgers
Have, have you thought about a world where Brian Kelly is the coach of the Wisconsin Badgers? I'd be fine with it. He'd, he'd make us better than what we are right now. He, he gets good results... I am so sick of watching my team suck every Saturday that I will, I will have the guy that I probably hate most of any coach, coach my alma mater.
We also saw the return of the NBA, featuring a debut from V.J. Edgecombe that had Max ready to plan a parade in Philadelphia. The Sixers rookie put up numbers that haven't been seen since the days of Wilt Chamberlain, providing a rare bright spot for Max's sports portfolio.
V.J. Edgecombe's NBA debut was the best since Wilt Chamberlain
VJ Edgecombe. Absolute beast. That's how, that's how you rebuild right there... Best NBA debut since Wilt Chamberlain. Wow. It's crazy. It's a crazy stat. Most points in his NBA debut since Wilt Chamberlain... 34 [points] in a win over the Celtics.
Just remember, if your head feels four times too big tomorrow, you probably just had two Rails at Tots.
