Rachel Nichols on NBA's Future, NFL Free Agency, and Mark from Love Is Blind
We are officially in the quarantine era, recording remotely via Skype and trying to maintain our sanity without March Madness. Big Cat is coping by purchasing an 80-pound weight vest to walk around Brooklyn like a tactical Zion Williamson, while PFT is slowly realizing that the sports world might not just be on a break, it might be heading for a dark autumn.
I'm nervous that the 2020 NFL season might actually be cancelled or pushed back
I've reached the point where it started to hit me that football season might get [cancelled]. Okay, and yeah now it's real.
The Quarterback Carousel and Running Back Regret
NFL Free Agency is the only thing keeping the lights on in the sports world right now. The Bears traded for Nick Foles, a move that feels uniquely designed to keep Chicago fans in a state of perpetual 8-8 misery. Big Cat isn't buying the Super Bowl MVP magic as a long-term solution for his team.
The Bears trading for Nick Foles won't change anything for the team
The fact that the Bears got Nick Foles and it is so perfect, by the way, that Nick Foles, I know he's a Super Bowl MVP, but it's not going to change anything. The Bears are still kind of stuck in what they are.
While the quarterback news dominated the cycle, Todd Gurley being cut by the Rams served as a grim reminder about the shelf life of elite backfield talent. It’s the same story every few years: a running back looks like a generational talent, gets the bag, and the team immediately regrets it.
It is never a smart move to sign a running back to a long-term contract
I know inside my own head that it's never smart to pay a free agent running back or just a running back in general a lot of money and to link them up to a long-term contract... none of those are going to be good takes three years from now, and I know that.
As for the impending battle between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles, Big Cat is predicting a messy rotation that leaves no one happy.
Neither Mitchell Trubisky nor Nick Foles will start more than 13 games for the Bears in a single season
I would put it at both guys, like neither guy has a chance in my mind to start more than 13 and a half games.
Rachel Nichols on the NBA's New Normal
Rachel Nichols joined the show to discuss the NBA suspension and what happens to a season that was just starting to heat up. We were robbed of the Giannis vs. Harden beef and the stretch run for the MVP, but Rachel thinks the trophy still belongs in Milwaukee regardless of when or if the season resumes.
If I had to vote for MVP today, Giannis Antetokounmpo would still beat LeBron James
I have been saying all season the Giannis has been my leader in the clubhouse... if I'm voting for MVP now, I'm still voting for Giannis because there hasn't been enough time for anything to push a different narrative.
There is some hope on the horizon, though. PFT suggested that the NBA should lean into the chaos and permanently move the season start to Christmas Day to avoid the NFL shadow, an idea that seems to be gaining some actual traction in league offices.
I think the NBA season should shift to a permanent December 25th start date
There's people have been pushing for a schedule change for a long time... who wanted the NBA calendar to start in December? So maybe on Christmas so you're not competing as much with football those people may get their wish.
Rachel also noted that while the big arenas are empty now, we might eventually see games return in high school gyms or practice facilities just to get the product back on television.
The NBA will return this summer and potentially play in smaller gyms without fans
If you look at Asia... they are restarting some of that. So it gives me hope that we will come out the other side... the NBA has talked about... other gym facilities, if you're playing without fans, you don't really have to play in a giant arena.
Love Is Blind Recap and Mark Joins the Show
We finally finished the descent into madness that is Love Is Blind. After weeks of watching Jessica (aka Messica) drink an entire vineyard's worth of wine while obsessing over Barnett, we got to talk to the man who lived it. Mark joined the show to explain what it was like being the 24-year-old stuck in an "experiment" with a woman who clearly wanted to be anywhere else.
Mark was a great sport about the whole thing, even addressing the "physicality" of the relationship and his roommate situation with Barnett during filming. He’s a massive Bears fan, and despite his own romantic hurdles, he’s still holding out hope for a big upgrade at the quarterback position.
Cam Newton would be a dynamic upgrade at quarterback for the Chicago Bears
I think [Cam Newton] would be like an upgrade of like a richer Mitchell Trubisky... I feel like he's more dynamic... I feel like Cam would kind of give us like maybe a little bit of swagger back.
As for the rest of the couples, Big Cat is actually a believer in the toxic energy of Giannina and Damian, noting that their constant fighting is just their specific love language.
Damian and Giannina from Love Is Blind will actually stay together
I actually was happy to hear that they were still together because as weird as this sounds I actually think they're the most like regular couple... I think they're actually going to make it.
At the end of the day, we’re all just looking for something to watch while we wash our hands for the fiftieth time today. If we have to replace the Final Four with reality TV stars and debates about 80-pound tactical vests, so be it.
Stay safe out there and remember to wash your apples.
