NFL teams are going to lose every time they choose to punt or kick field goals

The days of let's just take the points. Those have to be over. You are gonna lose in the NFL nowadays every time you kick the ball. A punt or a kick... You should not kick field goals that much in a game or you're gonna lose.

While mathematically supported by aggressive play-callers like Dan Campbell, kicking is still a standard and often necessary part of winning games.

The Chargers are entering the conversation as a top-tier AFC team

This year does feel like the year that the Chargers enter, like, okay, are we now adding another top tier team to the AFC... it's the year that the Chargers now enter that conversation.

The Chargers made the playoffs as #7 seed but lost in the Wild Card 16-28 to Patriots. They entered the conversation but weren't top-tier.

The Chicago Bears roster has enough built-in talent to win 3-4 more games just by having a competent staff

Everything Chicago has done the last couple years... I thought Chicago had the most built in wins based on their current... how many wins are there just built into that roster? I thought Chicago had the biggest spread... there's three or four wins built into that roster like that [with Ben Johnson].

Under Ben Johnson, the Bears improved from 5-12 in 2024 to 11-6 in 2025, winning the NFC North. Olsen was correct that there were 3-4 wins built into the roster with competent coaching — the improvement was even larger than predicted.

Brock Bowers is the best tight end prospect to enter the NFL draft in 15 years

I think [Bowers] is the best tight end prospect to come out of the draft in the last 10 years, 10, 15 years. Like, and his rookie year matched it, if not exceeded it, which was pretty incredible.

While subjective, Bowers had a historically productive rookie season for a tight end, supporting Olsen's claim.

White cleats and socks make a player look faster than they actually are

White cleats, light color cleats always make you look faster than you are. For a lot of these six five tight ends, that is good. Tall white guys cannot wear black cleats in my opinion... Black shoes with high white socks make you look slow.

This is a subjective aesthetic opinion common among football players and broadcasters.

The banning of the hip-drop tackle will lead to more knee and leg injuries

I think you're gonna have a lot of guys going low. I think you're gonna have a lot of guys taking shots to the knees and the legs to try to kind of knife you down. You're not gonna tackle Gronk and Kittle and these guys up at their shoulder pads... it becomes harder to play defense.

The impact of the 2024 hip-drop tackle ban on injury profiles will be seen throughout the 2024-25 NFL season.

Success in broadcasting is a combination of luck and constant preparation

Luck a hundred percent. A lot of life is being right place, right time... But like certain people tend to be lucky because they're constantly prepared. They're constantly ready for that moment. And then all of a sudden that right moment does flip and it clicks... All you can do is be good.

This is an expert opinion on career success, which is inherently subjective.

An NFL broadcaster could call an NBA game more easily than vice versa

I think an NFL broadcaster could broadcast an NBA game with more understanding and clarity than vice versa. Because it's too—offenses are too complicated. Defense is too complicated. The NFL, you know, 'cause you got, 'cause remember like in football, every play is an individual story... I just think there's more need and space to fill in more like football lingo and talk that than there is maybe in a ever, you know, a constant flowing basketball game that you could kind of fake it a little bit more.

This is a subjective comparison of the technical demands of two different broadcasting roles.

Travis Kelce will be the greatest tight end of all time if he produces for two more years

Kelsey's [Travis Kelce] production and longevity is now getting into that like Tony Gonzalez era... I think Kelsey becomes the first one who enters into that. You know, maybe even more than like, I mean Gronk was on that trajectory, maybe just didn't play long enough... If he has that thousand yard ish production another year or two... I think he becomes the first one who enters into that [GOAT status].

GOAT tight end status is a subjective debate. The Chiefs went 6-11 in 2025 with Mahomes' ACL tear, limiting Kelce's production context.

Jeremy Shockey made the tight end position 'cool' and mainstream

Shockey made the position like mainstream and fun in New York City. At least in my generation... Jockey made the position like mainstream and fun... Jockey made the position like mainstream and fun in New York City.

Shockey's cultural impact on the position is a widely held view among players of that era.

The Super Bowl holding call on James Bradberry was a 'tick-tack' call that ruined the game's ending

I still don't think it was a great call... It just seemed so ticky-tack in the moment and it changed the way that game was viewed from a historical context. There's no question. I don't care who wins the game. I want to see what was a historically great Super Bowl have a historically great ending.

This is a subjective opinion on officiating, though widely shared by fans.

If Mario Cristobal can't turn Miami football around, it can't be done

I said this from the time he got the job. If [Mario Cristobal] can't turn Miami back into what we all remember Miami, it just can't be done. It just can't be done.

This is an opinion about Miami football's potential under Mario Cristobal. Miami went 10-3 in 2025 and made the CFP as the #10 seed, suggesting the program is trending upward but hasn't fully 'turned around' to elite status yet.

The 2001-2002 Miami Hurricanes could have been competitive in the NFL

I mean, they're not gonna win the Super Bowl, but they'd be more competitive than some of the bottom teams that we see year in and year out at the bottom of the league. There's no question... That Nebraska team [they beat], that's the best college football team of all time.

This is a hypothetical 'what if' that can't be proven, making it subjective.

Travis Kelce will be the GOAT tight end with one or two more productive seasons

I've said on record, if [Travis] Kelce has another even year or two like the last seven, in my mind he goes down as the best ever. I never in a million years would've thought anyone would ever catch [Tony] Gonzalez... I think Kelce's a year or two away from doing it.

Kelce had another productive season in 2023 leading to a Super Bowl win, further solidifying this argument.

Trey Lance will be the 49ers' starting quarterback in Week 1

I'm saying Trey Lance. [George Kittle is] nodding with approval right now.

Trey Lance was named the starter for the 49ers in Week 1 of the 2022 season.

Tom Brady should keep playing until he has eight Super Bowl rings

I personally think his career doesn't really, eh, you know, I think you can't really make a judgment on his career until he has eight Superbowl. So I think he, he, if he really wanted to achieve something, he should just continue to play and see if he can win another ring.

Brady retired after the 2022 season with seven rings, never reaching eight.

The standards for tight end production have shifted significantly

When I first came in the league, if you want to be a top 10 tight end in the league, if you had five, 600 yards, you would be in the top 10. Now you get five, 600 yards... you're an afterthought.

Statistically true; the 10th leading TE in receiving yards now typically clears 600-700 yards.

The University of Miami is the real Tight End U.

Miami went five tight ends in a row who were drafted in the first round... The only guy who wasn't was drafted in the second round. Going back to Miami lineage, you have Bubba Franks first round, Shockey first round, Kellen Winslow [Jr.] first round... Me, first round. Since then, we've had Jimmy Graham... David Njoku... We've had dudes now.

The title of 'Tight End U' is a subjective matter of opinion.

I am completely and utterly done with football and will not come out of retirement.

I am not going to be coming out of retirement. I'm completely and utterly done. I've set a record for how many times I've broken and ruptured my feet. So I'm full-time dad and part-time broadcaster.

Olsen has remained retired and has become a successful lead broadcaster for FOX.

I can play up to five more years in the NFL

How many more years are you going to play in the NFL? I would say anywhere between one and five... 15? Yeah, I could do 15 [seasons total].

Olsen played three more seasons (2018, 2019 with Carolina, 2020 with Seattle), retiring in January 2021 after 14 seasons. He was very close to his '15 season' goal.

Wisconsin football will never be relevant no matter how many games they win

Wisconsin could win 400 games in a row. Miami goes on a four-game win streak. [Miami is more relevant]. That's why it's a joke. No one cares about Wisconsin. People have nostalgic bullshit [for Miami].

This is a subjective take on 'relevance' and 'coolness' in college football culture.

Miami football won't have a quarterback who can hit a guy next year

Do you have a quarterback coming up next year that's going to be able to hit a guy? Probably not. I think our talent just caught up to us.

The 2018 Hurricanes struggled significantly with Malik Rosier and N'Kosi Perry at QB, finishing 7-6 with poor offensive production.

The media focus on the dangers of concussions and football injuries is fair

I think [the media focus on concussion protocol] is fair. I mean, I think no person in their right mind wants to see guys get their brains scrambled and injured... You can take strides to improve the safety... [but] you'll never take injury out of football. That's just the reality of the game.

This is a subjective take on media fairness and the nature of the sport.

There is a 0% chance I ever get into coaching

I hope you don't think you're going to get into coaching with that attitude [not drinking coffee]. There'll be 0% chance I get into coaching.

Since retiring, Olsen immediately became a top-tier color analyst for FOX and has not taken a coaching job.
