Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey on 49ers, Bears Dynasty, and Saban’s Rage
The Bears are officially back. Big Cat woke up on Saturday morning to the news that Ryan Pace finally put his nuts on the table and traded for Khalil Mack. While the rest of the NFL world is analyzing draft capital, Big Cat is already clearing space for a trophy case.
The Khalil Mack trade marks the beginning of a Bears dynasty
The Bears are back... The best trade that's ever been traded. I'm thinking like maybe even when the Cowboys did that trade with the Vikings, this is going to be the start of a dynasty.
While Big Cat is high on the Kool-Aid, PFT is trying to wrap his head around what Jon Gruden is doing in Oakland. It feels like Gruden is actively trying to avoid the inconvenience of having elite talent on his roster just so he can get back to drawing plays on Hooters napkins with 1990s quarterbacks.
Jon Gruden trades away good players because he doesn't want the hassle of coaching them
If it were up to Jon Gruden, he would still have Jeff Garcia as his quarterback right now. So he sees a first-rounder and he's like, you know what? I'd rather not go through the hassle of having to deal with good players.
With Mack in the fold, the expectations in Chicago have shifted from "maybe we'll be competitive" to "the defense is going to murder people." Big Cat isn't just looking for a winning record; he’s looking for a deep playoff run behind a transformed unit.
The 2018 Bears defense will be a top-five unit if they stay healthy
From the Bears' perspective, to get serious for a minute, it actually is a super exciting trade because the defense is now... I would say top five defense, if everyone stays healthy, they have two studs.
College Football Week 1 Overreactions
The guys also broke down a massive opening weekend of college football. Michigan looked exactly like the Michigan we’ve seen for years, which isn't great news for Jim Harbaugh. Big Cat is already putting the khakis on notice, noting that if the rivalry games don't go his way, the seat is going to get incinerated.
Jim Harbaugh is officially on the hot seat if he loses to Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Ohio State in 2018
If he can't beat any of his rivals this year... that is going to be a problem. ... If you lose to Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Ohio State, you are obviously on the hot seat, whether it's fair or not.
Down in the swamp, LSU absolutely manhandled Miami. It was a physical beatdown that left the guys wondering if the turnover chain has officially lost its luster. When you're getting bullied on national TV, putting on a giant gold chain for a single interception feels a little hollow.
The Miami Hurricanes should officially retire the turnover chain after losing to LSU
If you were Miami, if you were a Mark Richt, if you were a Miami fan, you can't in good conscience keep the turnover chain alive. It's dead. At some point, you just have to have it be dead because it's hollow.
Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey
49ers offensive linemen Joe Staley and Mike McGlinchey joined the show for an all-time interview. Staley has survived roughly forty-five different head coaching regimes in San Francisco, and he gave us some incredible insight into the eccentricities of Jim Harbaugh and the legendary Jim Tomsula.
Jim Harbaugh always tried to be the dominant male in every situation
He only knows one way to go... [Harbaugh] definitely would set [paintballing] up in a way that he would win and be the dominant male in the situation.
Staley reminisced about the 2012 Super Bowl run and just how dominant that group was up front. Even after a decade in the league, he’s still feeling rejuvenated by the current direction of the franchise under Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy G.
The 2018 49ers season is the best I've felt in 12 years
I think we're going to be really good this year. I feel confident with the team, the direction we're going, the coaching staff is amazing. This is the best I've felt in 12 years as far as going into this season.
McGlinchey, the rookie, had to answer for his massive signing bonus and his Notre Dame pedigree. The dynamic between the veteran Staley and the rookie is already top-tier, even if Staley is charging him for talking too much in the meeting rooms.
Respect the Biz and Monday Readings
Nick Saban provided an all-time "Respect the Biz" moment by absolutely ripping into Maria Taylor for asking a standard question about his quarterbacks. Saban is apparently the only person in America who thinks having two elite quarterbacks is a burden.
Tua Tagovailoa will be the best pro quarterback Nick Saban ever produces
Tua is insanely fun to watch, like probably the best pro quarterback that Nick Saban will ever have.
To wrap things up, we finally did it. We stuck to a bit and delivered a Monday Reading. This week featured a Politico article that attempted to draw a direct line between the Buffalo Bills' four Super Bowl losses and the radicalization of Timothy McVeigh. It’s the kind of high-level journalism that only PMT can truly appreciate.
The Buffalo Bills losing four Super Bowls contributed to Timothy McVeigh becoming a terrorist
I am not saying that Timothy McVeigh bombed Oklahoma City in 1995 because the Buffalo Bills lost four Super Bowls in a row. But I'm not saying he didn't either... that Buffalo heartbreak was one of the many shadows that fell across McVeigh's life.
If the Bills had just jumped through a few more tables in the 90s, history might look very different.
