Tarik Skubal and Rex Ryan on AL Cy Young, Jets Rumors, and Week 12

Life is officially complete now that we have witnessed Jameis Winston leading a comeback in the Cleveland snow. Thursday night was peak football, with the lake effect turning the field into a beautiful, chaotic mess. PFT is already on the front lines protecting the integrity of the sport against the threat of Cleveland's proposed dome project.

Building a dome in Cleveland is wrong because it ruins snow football

The lake came to play tonight. The snow was, it was gorgeous. It was artistic out there. They're trying to take snow football away from you. They're trying to build a dome in Cleveland and that's not gonna look right at all. Seeing the Browns playing good weather, like indoor weather in late November, December, maybe January. That's not gonna look right to me.

The city of Cleveland and the Browns have been in negotiations regarding a potential dome in Brook Park, though plans are not finalized. The opinion is subjective.

The Steelers almost pulled off the most Pittsburgh win ever, looking like absolute garbage for three quarters before stumbling into a lead. Big Cat is starting to have some real doubts about their ceiling after watching them struggle against a Browns team that basically had their bags packed for vacation until Jameis started giving pre-game speeches.

The Steelers are just 'pretty good plus sometimes'

I'll make a deal with your, you here. I think I'm comfortable saying the Steelers are pretty good. Plus pretty good plus pretty good plus I could do pretty good. Plus I can meet you a pretty good plus about really pretty good plus kind of sometimes. Really pretty good. Plus sometimes.

The Steelers' actual quality is a matter of ongoing debate and depends on end-of-season results.

Week 12 Picks and Preview

Looking ahead to the weekend, the board is a little light on marquee matchups, but we have plenty of narratives to keep us busy. The Lions continue to be the scariest team in football, though Big Cat is looking at a specific underdog to keep things interesting in Indianapolis. He thinks the Colts are in a desperate spot and might just have enough to keep the margin within a touchdown.

The Colts will keep it close against the Lions

I actually think the Colts are gonna be in this game. I don't think the Colts are gonna win this game, but I think they're gonna keep it close. And it might be the dumbest thing ever. But I'm, I actually, no, I haven't, I haven't been bad. I just think seven and a half Colts really need these games.

The Lions won 24-6, covering the 7.5 spread comfortably.

PFT isn't buying any Lions regression, even after Jared Goff threw five interceptions against the Texans and they still won. He is riding with Dan Campbell’s squad until they give him a reason to do otherwise.

The Lions are my 'until further notice' team and I'm assuming they'll beat anybody

The Lions are my until further notice team. I'm going to assume that the Lions will beat anybody. [The Texans game] was like a historically bad game from Jared Goff too. They still won.

The Lions continued to dominate through late November and December, maintaining their status as the top team in the NFC.

In the NFC West, the Cardinals are quietly becoming the most balanced team in the division. While everyone was waiting for the 49ers to reclaim their throne, Kyler Murray and Jonathan Gannon have built a physical bully in the desert. Big Cat is officially ready to put some respect on their name as they head into a divisional clash with the Seahawks.

The Cardinals are for real

I'm ready to fully believe in the Cardinals. I might crown their asses. I just know the Cardinals feel like a very sound football team through and through off the bye week. Their eyes are there. They have the NFC West. If they could string together some more wins, especially in the division, they're undefeated in the division right now.

The Cardinals lost to the Seahawks 16-6 immediately after this take, stalling their momentum.

Tarik Skubal: The Cy Young Hoss

AL Cy Young winner and Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal joined the show to discuss his dominant season and his wife buying him a new car to celebrate the award. Skubal is the definition of a "Hoss" on the mound, a lefty with high velocity and enough attitude to exchange double birds with Cleveland fans during the playoffs. Despite the individual accolades, he is focused on the one thing that separates the greats from the legends.

The pinnacle of pitching is winning a World Series ring

I just wanna win. I think the best thing in sports is winning. It cures everything. Individually, Triple Crown, Cy Young, obviously you wanna do that again. But it all wouldn't mean as much if I don't have a ring. If not multiple. That's why you play. At least that's why I play the game is to win World Series rings and go perform on that stage.

This is Skubal's personal professional goal.

Because we are always trying to help the cast, we asked the best pitcher in the American League for advice on Max’s upcoming pitching challenge. Max is set to face a college lineup, and Skubal gave him a strategy that involves throwing significantly slower than his already modest 63 mph heater.

To get college hitters out, throw slow fastballs (45 mph) down the middle

My advice would be to throw it very slow. Once you get to like 65, 70 miles an hour, that's when guys are gonna start unleashing on it. So my advice would be to hone in a really slow pitch over the zone. Throw it right down the middle and it'll cut sometimes and it'll sink sometimes. Dial in a 45 mile an hour fastball and throw it on the two seams, don't throw it on the four seams.

The effectiveness of this advice for Max's specific challenge is subjective and depends on the hitters' ability to adjust to 'junk' pitching.

Rex Ryan: Future Jets Head Coach?

Rex Ryan stopped by with enough energy to power the entire New Jersey power grid. He didn't mince words about the state of the Jets, essentially offering his services to owner Woody Johnson live on air. Rex believes the roster is loaded with talent but lacks the passion and defensive identity that he could reinstall almost instantly.

I would turn the Jets around in two minutes if I took over

I'd like to. There's no doubt about it. I've let everybody know that I definitely would be interested in that job... I think if I took over it'd be, it'd be turned in about two minutes because I think it starts with the passion and the energy that I would bring to that building. And the, we're not gonna take any poop mentality either. I know when I get an opportunity to interview for it, I'm gonna get the job.

Whether he would actually get the job or turn it around is hypothetical.

Rex also broke down the Super Bowl contenders, giving massive credit to the Lions and his son’s coaching staff in Detroit. He believes the Lions were essentially a lock for the title before an unfortunate injury changed the math on their pass rush.

If Aidan Hutchinson didn't get hurt, the Lions would have walked to a Super Bowl title

I think if Aiden Hutchinson doesn't get hurt, I think Detroit would've walked through this thing. Would've walked through it. And the fact that my son coaches there is probably another reason I'm taking 'em. But I feel that confident about this team.

This is a hypothetical 'what if' scenario that cannot be definitively proven, especially since the Lions remain a top contender without Hutchinson.

We wrapped up with Fyre Fest of the Week, where Hank’s car took personal offense to him wanting to buy a new one and decided to slide into a maintenance truck. To top it off, President Pug issued a diabolical new policy for the lottery ball that ensures PFT and Memes will be suffering together for the foreseeable future.

Don't let your kids teach each other how to escape their cribs.

The Vikings have a historically great rush defense, the third-best of all time

The Vikings have the best rush defense in the NFL. They're letting up 74.4 yards per game. That's the third best of all time. You know what the other two teams are? The 1994 Vikings and the 2007 Vikings. They have an outstanding rush defense.

Through Week 11, the Vikings lead the league in rush defense and their yardage allowed puts them in elite historic company.

The Patriots are the team nobody wants to play in the AFC East

I think so. Usually the, you know, with the Patriots, it's like all the trends reversing the Dolphins have always been like the boogeyman even when the, when Brady was there and the Patriots are good. This is the trend weekend reverse in our favor.

The Patriots lost to the Dolphins 34-15 that weekend, failing to be the 'boogeyman' or a threat in that specific matchup.

The Giants are starting Tommy DeVito because they are trying to tank

I think they're trying to lose. I think they're trying to lose and try to tank for a quarterback. Yeah. Which would make sense.

While impossible to verify intent, DeVito's start resulted in a poor offensive performance, supporting the 'better draft pick' outcome.

I only feel bad for Drew Locke in the Giants' quarterback debacle

Daniel Jones made a ton of money and has been bad for six years and he should just be happy. He's gonna have hundreds of millions of dollars to just hang out. Drew Locke, like, he doesn't have a lot of chances. If he's not gonna get a chance here, where's his next chance?

This is an inherently subjective take on who deserves sympathy in a roster management situation.

The Eagles have the most talent in the NFL

Philadelphia. To me, talent wise, it has the most talent in the National Football League. And [Nick] Sirianni now he has the formula: run the ball more than you throw it, heavy up the protections for Jalen Hurts and let him use his legs too. That team right there is playing really well.

While talent evaluation is subjective, the Eagles have one of the deepest rosters and most Pro Bowlers in the league.

Ben Johnson will be a superstar head coach, the next Bill Walsh

Ben Johnson's gonna be a superstar, in my opinion, maybe the next Bill Walsh. Like, so to me if you could add him... I think this kid right here has a chance to be outstanding like hall of fame type guy. I know the way he prepares, I know all that type of stuff.

Johnson's head coaching career hasn't started yet, so this remains to be seen.

Caleb Williams is a generational talent

This is a generational talent. He really is. When he throws the ball on time, inside of three seconds he's in the top three in the league in QBR... I think the kid is gonna be a phenomenal kid... with the skillset he has, man, I'm telling you like I think he's gonna be a superstar in the league. I really do.

Williams' career is in its infancy; his long-term 'superstar' status is pending.

Aaron Glenn will be a superstar head coach and is the top coordinator players want to play for

I think Aaron Glenn... he's the guy without question. Even when you hear about players who the number one coordinator is who they would want play for, it's always Aaron Glenn. I think Aaron Glenn has it. And when you hear him interviewed, I'm like, that's the dang head coach. I think he's got a chance to be really special.

Aaron Glenn was hired as head coach of the Jets in January 2025, confirming Rex Ryan's prediction that he'd be a head coach. However, the Jets went 3-14 in Glenn's first season, far from 'superstar' status. The prediction that he'd be special has not materialized yet.

Coaches in the NFL know zero about strength and conditioning

That's an underrated thing right there. Strength and conditioning thing. 'Cause guess what, guess how many coaches know anything about strength and conditioning? That'd be zero. Nobody does. But it's so damn important.

While an exaggeration ('zero'), it's a verifiable claim about the curriculum and focus of coaching staffs.

The Ravens will beat the Chargers on Monday night by feeding Derrick Henry

I'm gonna go with John [Harbaugh]. Strictly because it's hard for me to ignore a Hall of Fame quarterback and a Hall of Fame running back. I'm sure John's gonna be like, Hey, Todd Monkin dude, run him, run him till his damn tongue is dragging. I wanna see 30 carries from Derrick Henry. I would not be surprised if that doesn't happen in this game.

The Ravens beat the Chargers 30-23 on November 25, 2024. Derrick Henry had 24 carries for 140 yards, effectively 'feeding the beast' as Rex suggested.
