Tarik Skubal and Rex Ryan on AL Cy Young, Jets Rumors, and Week 12
Life is officially complete now that we have witnessed Jameis Winston leading a comeback in the Cleveland snow. Thursday night was peak football, with the lake effect turning the field into a beautiful, chaotic mess. PFT is already on the front lines protecting the integrity of the sport against the threat of Cleveland's proposed dome project.
Building a dome in Cleveland is wrong because it ruins snow football
The lake came to play tonight. The snow was, it was gorgeous. It was artistic out there. They're trying to take snow football away from you. They're trying to build a dome in Cleveland and that's not gonna look right at all. Seeing the Browns playing good weather, like indoor weather in late November, December, maybe January. That's not gonna look right to me.
The Steelers almost pulled off the most Pittsburgh win ever, looking like absolute garbage for three quarters before stumbling into a lead. Big Cat is starting to have some real doubts about their ceiling after watching them struggle against a Browns team that basically had their bags packed for vacation until Jameis started giving pre-game speeches.
The Steelers are just 'pretty good plus sometimes'
I'll make a deal with your, you here. I think I'm comfortable saying the Steelers are pretty good. Plus pretty good plus pretty good plus I could do pretty good. Plus I can meet you a pretty good plus about really pretty good plus kind of sometimes. Really pretty good. Plus sometimes.
Week 12 Picks and Preview
Looking ahead to the weekend, the board is a little light on marquee matchups, but we have plenty of narratives to keep us busy. The Lions continue to be the scariest team in football, though Big Cat is looking at a specific underdog to keep things interesting in Indianapolis. He thinks the Colts are in a desperate spot and might just have enough to keep the margin within a touchdown.
The Colts will keep it close against the Lions
I actually think the Colts are gonna be in this game. I don't think the Colts are gonna win this game, but I think they're gonna keep it close. And it might be the dumbest thing ever. But I'm, I actually, no, I haven't, I haven't been bad. I just think seven and a half Colts really need these games.
PFT isn't buying any Lions regression, even after Jared Goff threw five interceptions against the Texans and they still won. He is riding with Dan Campbell’s squad until they give him a reason to do otherwise.
The Lions are my 'until further notice' team and I'm assuming they'll beat anybody
The Lions are my until further notice team. I'm going to assume that the Lions will beat anybody. [The Texans game] was like a historically bad game from Jared Goff too. They still won.
In the NFC West, the Cardinals are quietly becoming the most balanced team in the division. While everyone was waiting for the 49ers to reclaim their throne, Kyler Murray and Jonathan Gannon have built a physical bully in the desert. Big Cat is officially ready to put some respect on their name as they head into a divisional clash with the Seahawks.
The Cardinals are for real
I'm ready to fully believe in the Cardinals. I might crown their asses. I just know the Cardinals feel like a very sound football team through and through off the bye week. Their eyes are there. They have the NFC West. If they could string together some more wins, especially in the division, they're undefeated in the division right now.
Tarik Skubal: The Cy Young Hoss
AL Cy Young winner and Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal joined the show to discuss his dominant season and his wife buying him a new car to celebrate the award. Skubal is the definition of a "Hoss" on the mound, a lefty with high velocity and enough attitude to exchange double birds with Cleveland fans during the playoffs. Despite the individual accolades, he is focused on the one thing that separates the greats from the legends.
The pinnacle of pitching is winning a World Series ring
I just wanna win. I think the best thing in sports is winning. It cures everything. Individually, Triple Crown, Cy Young, obviously you wanna do that again. But it all wouldn't mean as much if I don't have a ring. If not multiple. That's why you play. At least that's why I play the game is to win World Series rings and go perform on that stage.
Because we are always trying to help the cast, we asked the best pitcher in the American League for advice on Max’s upcoming pitching challenge. Max is set to face a college lineup, and Skubal gave him a strategy that involves throwing significantly slower than his already modest 63 mph heater.
To get college hitters out, throw slow fastballs (45 mph) down the middle
My advice would be to throw it very slow. Once you get to like 65, 70 miles an hour, that's when guys are gonna start unleashing on it. So my advice would be to hone in a really slow pitch over the zone. Throw it right down the middle and it'll cut sometimes and it'll sink sometimes. Dial in a 45 mile an hour fastball and throw it on the two seams, don't throw it on the four seams.
Rex Ryan: Future Jets Head Coach?
Rex Ryan stopped by with enough energy to power the entire New Jersey power grid. He didn't mince words about the state of the Jets, essentially offering his services to owner Woody Johnson live on air. Rex believes the roster is loaded with talent but lacks the passion and defensive identity that he could reinstall almost instantly.
I would turn the Jets around in two minutes if I took over
I'd like to. There's no doubt about it. I've let everybody know that I definitely would be interested in that job... I think if I took over it'd be, it'd be turned in about two minutes because I think it starts with the passion and the energy that I would bring to that building. And the, we're not gonna take any poop mentality either. I know when I get an opportunity to interview for it, I'm gonna get the job.
Rex also broke down the Super Bowl contenders, giving massive credit to the Lions and his son’s coaching staff in Detroit. He believes the Lions were essentially a lock for the title before an unfortunate injury changed the math on their pass rush.
If Aidan Hutchinson didn't get hurt, the Lions would have walked to a Super Bowl title
I think if Aiden Hutchinson doesn't get hurt, I think Detroit would've walked through this thing. Would've walked through it. And the fact that my son coaches there is probably another reason I'm taking 'em. But I feel that confident about this team.
We wrapped up with Fyre Fest of the Week, where Hank’s car took personal offense to him wanting to buy a new one and decided to slide into a maintenance truck. To top it off, President Pug issued a diabolical new policy for the lottery ball that ensures PFT and Memes will be suffering together for the foreseeable future.
Don't let your kids teach each other how to escape their cribs.
