Matt Jones on March Madness Brackets and Blake Bortles to LA
The BOAT has officially found a safe harbor. Blake Bortles is heading to the Los Angeles Rams, and Big Cat and PFT couldn't be happier for their favorite quarterback. The quarterback room in LA is basically a PMT playground now, and the expectations for what Sean McVay can do with Blake are sky-high.
Sean McVay will turn Blake Bortles into the greatest quarterback of all time
Sean McVay is about to get his hands on that clay and mold [Blake Bortles] into the greatest quarterback of all time. Well, second. One and one A with him and Jared Goff. I'm so excited for the Bortles.
Before diving into the bracket, Big Cat wanted to address the Dave Gettleman era in New York. While everyone else is burying the Giants for their offseason moves, Big Cat is standing firm on Eli Manning still having some gas in the tank.
Eli Manning is still a good quarterback and the Giants know exactly what they're doing
This narrative that Eli [Manning] is overpaid and can't play is a crock. Dave Gettleman, the quote machine. Just wanted to get that out of the way. All you asking out there, the Giants know exactly what they're doing. Eli is still good.
March Madness Bracket Breakdown
It is officially the best four days of the year. The guys spent time looking at the stats that actually matter for your bracket, specifically adjusted offense and defense. Big Cat warned everyone not to be a hero when picking their champion, narrowing the field down to the heavy hitters.
The Rams will return to the Super Bowl with Blake Bortles hoisting the Lombardi trophy
Looking forward to the Rams going back to the Super Bowl. [Blake] Bortles hoisting that Lombardi trophy over his beautiful, beautiful, full head of hair.
However, PFT has his eyes on one specific stat that could doom the Blue Devils. Despite having Zion Williamson, Duke’s inability to hit from deep has PFT feeling skeptical about their ceiling.
The 2019 NCAA champion will come from a group of seven teams: Virginia, Duke, Michigan State, UNC, Gonzaga, Michigan, or Kentucky
There has been no team that has ever won the tournament that hasn't finished in the top 20 in adjusted offense and adjusted defense. I'm going to give you the teams right now. So if you're waiting to fill out your bracket, here are the teams that you should pick from. Virginia, Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina, Gonzaga, Michigan, Kentucky.
When it came time to lock in the actual Final Four picks, the board was mostly chalk, though Hank managed to find a path for his Badgers that involves a massive upset for Virginia.
My 2019 Final Four: Virginia, Duke, Kentucky, and Michigan
So my Final Four is Virginia, Duke, Kentucky... and Michigan.
Duke will not reach the championship game because their three-point percentage is too low
Duke's three-point percentage is 30.2. It is the lowest in Division I men's basketball... no team, I repeat, no team has ever gotten to the championship game with a three-point percentage that low.
Oregon will upset Wisconsin in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament
I'm going straight chalk this year in every game. I think the committee, again, this is the year they get it right, and I'm going Oregon over Wisconsin. That's my only upset.
Matt Jones Joins the Show
Kentucky Sports Radio’s Matt Jones joined the show to give a boots-on-the-ground perspective from the SEC. He broke down why Kentucky fell apart in the SEC tournament and gave a massive shout-out to Wisconsin's own Tyler Herro for becoming a star in Lexington. Matt also looked ahead to the first game of the tournament, Louisville vs. Minnesota, which features a heavy dose of Pitino family drama.
Wisconsin will reach the Elite Eight after Oklahoma upsets Virginia in the second round
I think Kansas State's going to get upset, which leads to the classic second round, Wisconsin being favored. And then Oklahoma's going to upset Virginia. Wisconsin's going to beat Oklahoma [to reach the Elite Eight].
Matt isn't just high on the blue bloods, though. He’s looking at a specific 13-seed to make some noise in the first weekend, mainly because he doesn't trust Kansas State to show up without Dean Wade.
I am officially canceling Beto O'Rourke because I don't know how to pronounce his name
I've already canceled you. I push you to the side, Beto, and you're done because I can't say your name. It's a very simple test. I need to be able to say your name [instantly].
While we all love a good Cinderella story, Matt agrees with the sentiment that this is a top-heavy year. He believes there are only half a dozen teams with the actual DNA to win six games in three weeks.
Tyler Herro will be a top 20 pick in the NBA Draft
The key for Kentucky is your boy Tyler Herro from Wisconsin... he's been awesome. He's going to end up a top 20 pick in the NBA draft.
Mike Trout and Respect the Biz
Baseball tried its best to stay relevant during March Madness by giving Mike Trout $430 million. Big Cat suggested that the MLB should buy airtime on every cable station for a "live look-in" every time Trout comes to the plate just so people actually know what he looks like.
We also had a massive Respect the Biz moment for Mark Barron, who reportedly shook the hand of every media member in Pittsburgh after his introductory interview. That kind of grit is how you win over the local beat writers before you even record a tackle.
Good luck with your brackets, don't let anyone shame your chalky picks, and remember to visualize yourself winning before Thursday's tip-off.
