Monday, July 11, 202217 takes

Novak Djokovic is the one true GOAT and we talk a little tennis. (-) Baker gets traded to the Panthers and Zach Wilson may be banging his mom's best friend. (-) F1 talk even though we didnt watch the race. (-) Who's back of the week goes sideways into a hypothetical Lebron/Steph vs Magic/MJ debate and Brett Favre is open to being the Color Analyst on MNF. (-) Andy Staples joins the show to talk CFB realignment, whats going to happen to Notre Dame, and how the Big 12 may be in a great spot going forward. We finish with the Mt Rushmore of College Football Traditions. (-)

Andy Staples on CFB Realignment and the Mt. Rushmore of Traditions

The sports world might be in the dog days of July, but college football managed to set the world on fire with conference realignment, and Zach Wilson managed to set the internet on fire by allegedly having that dog in him. Big Cat and PFT opened the show by crowning a new king of the court after Wimbledon. While Jake tried to defend the legacy of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, Big Cat wasn't having any of it.

Novak Djokovic is the one true tennis GOAT

Novak Djokovic the goat. Oh, oh, oh... officially passes Roger Federer in championships, major championships, one away from [Nadal] who just wins Mickey Mouse clay ones every single time... I think it's, it's firmly established. He is the goat.

While subjective, Djokovic later took the lead in total Grand Slam titles, strengthening the statistical case for this take.

With Djokovic closing in on the all-time major record, Big Cat is already looking at the finish line for the Joker's career.

Novak Djokovic will finish his career with 30 major championships

[Djokovic] is gonna end up with 30.

Djokovic currently has 24 majors (as of mid-2024). He needs 6 more to reach 30.

Quarterback Chaos and Mormon Rumors

The guys shifted to the NFL where Baker Mayfield finally found a home with the Carolina Panthers. While the Browns seem ready to move on, PFT still thinks Baker has some high-level football left in him, especially now that he's healthy and has that signature chip back on his shoulder.

Baker Mayfield can still be a top 12 quarterback in the NFL

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I think that Baker [Mayfield] is still like, he could be a top 12 quarterback. I don't think he's a bust at all. I think that he was hurt last year.

Mayfield struggled in Carolina and was released, but later had a career resurgence with the Buccaneers in 2023, arguably reaching top 12-15 status again.

But the real story of the week involved Jets quarterback Zach Wilson. After some wild Instagram comments from an ex-girlfriend alleged that Wilson was spending his offseason with his mom's best friend, the PMT crew officially welcomed him to the "dog" category. PFT and Big Cat both noted that this isn't a scandal, it's a locker room legend in the making.

Zach Wilson will get more respect in the Jets locker room because of the rumors about his personal life

I think this actually will get Zach Wilson more respect in the locker room... If you're a Jets fan, you gotta be like, okay, we got ourselves a quarterback... he might be on the injury report week one, because he's going to have a broken hand for getting high fives.

While teammates like Mekhi Becton tweeted support, Wilson's tenure in the Jets locker room famously soured due to poor performance and leadership concerns later in the season.

Andy Staples on the End of Geography

Andy Staples joined the show to help make sense of the Big Ten's move to snag USC and UCLA, effectively killing the Pac-12 as we know it. Andy explains that the Big 12, once left for dead, might actually be the predator now. He suggested a specific strategy for them to land the remaining big fish in the West.

The Big 12 should offer Oregon and Washington a 'dream job' buyout clause to lure them away from the Pac-12

What I think the Big 12 should do is go to Oregon, Washington, be like... here's what we're going to do. You're going to come with us and we're going to put a clause in your deal that just says you want out fine. You're out. If the Big 10 is, you know... dream job buyout, or dream job clause. Do that and you get them, and then you'll get Utah and Colorado and you'll get whoever else you want from that league.

The Big 12 did not use this specific clause; Oregon and Washington eventually joined the Big Ten directly in 2023, while Colorado and others moved to the Big 12 on standard terms.

They discussed the Notre Dame factor, which remains the biggest domino on the board. While the Irish value their independence, the new landscape of the College Football Playoff might make it impossible for them to stay solo forever.

Notre Dame will eventually be forced to join a conference for playoff access

If Notre Dame loses, you know, has their vote diluted for the playoff, they're going to join a conference... The second this happened the other day with the Big Ten adding USC and UCLA, I was like, okay, now this is it. This is when Notre Dame has to join a conference.

Notre Dame has not been forced to join a conference as of the 2025 season. They remain an independent in football and still received playoff consideration (though they finished approximately 9-3).

Andy also touched on the legal and financial shifts coming to the sport. Between NIL and the constant pressure of TV contracts, the traditional model of the NCAA is basically a walking corpse.

College football governance will eventually separate from the NCAA to handle revenue sports specifically

I think the governance is going to change. Instead of there being one organization that handles all sports, there will be an organization that handles football and the NCAA might handle all the other sports... it basically, you could be licensing the name of the university.

As of 2024, the NCAA is undergoing massive shifts (House settlement), moving toward a model that resembles professional employment, though a formal split hasn't occurred yet.

Mt. Rushmore of College Football Traditions

To wrap things up, the crew drafted the Mt. Rushmore of College Football Traditions. Andy Staples went with heavy hitters like "Jump Around" and Ralphie the Buffalo's run at Colorado. PFT and Big Cat took a more degenerate route, focusing on the traditions that actually affect their bank accounts, specifically the annual shootout in Oklahoma.

I always bet the over on Bedlam no matter what

My favorite college tradition... betting the over in Bedlam, no matter what, no matter what. Oklahoma/Oklahoma State play, over, put it on your phone.

The 2022 Bedlam game went Under (28-13, total 41, O/U was ~64). The 2023 game went Under (27-24, total 51, O/U was ~61).

They also debated the most recurring tradition in sports media: the "Texas is Back" conversation. While Andy has been burned too many times to believe, Big Cat thinks the Longhorns have a very low bar to clear to reclaim their crown this fall.

Texas is 'back' as soon as they get one big win in September

My threshold is one big win in September. They're back... If they cover against Alabama, they might be back. Yes, that might be what makes them back right there.

Hot TakeCFBHotSarcastic
Texas lost to Alabama 20-19 but covered the spread. They were declared 'back' by many after that, though they finished 8-5. They truly became 'back' in 2023 by making the Playoff.

If the Longhorns can keep it close with the Crimson Tide, expect the hype train to leave the station at full speed.

The rumors about Zach Wilson's personal life confirm he has 'that dog in him'

I think confirmed got that dog in him. He is a dog... If it's the truth, two consenting adults, what's the problem? I think this actually will get Zach Wilson more respect in the locker room.

Whether he has 'that dog in him' is subjective, though his play on the field remained poor thereafter.

An NBA owner will eventually refuse to trade a superstar just to push back against 'player empowerment'

I feel like the pendulum has swung so much in the direction of player empowerment that we're going to get one owner that's just going to be like, you know what? Fuck it. Fuck it. I'm not changing anything.

While several teams have held out longer (like the Nets with Durant and later the Blazers with Dame Lillard), the stars are almost always eventually moved.

Aaron Rodgers' new tattoo was designed specifically to impress Joe Rogan

It's a tattoo that was designed to impress Joe Rogan. Very clearly some sort of... It's a tattoo that he wants you to be like, what is that about? And then you have to strap in for three hours because he's going to tell you open your mind, open your heart tattoo.

Subjective interpretation of intent.

The only two ways Kevin Durant can restore his legacy are by returning to the Thunder or waiting to play for the Sonics

The only two places Kevin Durant can go to restore his legacy is the Thunder or if he waits out for the Sonics and their franchise again. And it would be a believable story, everyone would root for Kevin Durant if he went to the Sonics and they have the picks to give up.

Durant has not returned to OKC or a Seattle team; he stayed with the Nets before being traded to the Suns in 2023.

Chet Holmgren will get dunked on so hard this year it will deflate his cockiness

He's going to get dunked on once so viciously this year. It will, it will take 5% of the cockiness out of him. I was going to say that right now, you know, someone's going to just yam, got to pay her dues.

Chet Holmgren missed the entire 2022-23 season with a foot injury suffered in a Pro-Am game shortly after this episode.

LeBron James and Steph Curry would beat Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson in a 2v2 because of the three-point shot

I think Steph Curry, he doesn't let LeBron touch the ball except to rebound. And then Steph, if he hits 40% of his threes, two is 50%... 100% more than one. I think mathematically they would dominate that game.

This is a hypothetical debate that can't be resolved.

People who wear SPF 50 sunscreen should just stay inside

I judge you if your SPF is 35 or plus... I want to put it on 50. I'm just immediately like, dude, just go inside. There's no reason to be outside. If you really can't handle this, just say you're not that guy pal. That's what I say to anyone who puts on 50.

This is a humorous value judgment.

North Carolina is the biggest 'tug of war' school for future conference realignment

North Carolina would be the biggest tug of war because the Big Ten and the SEC both want them badly. That's the one... North Carolina has long been coveted by the Big Ten and the SEC.

While realignment is ongoing, UNC hasn't moved yet. The interest from both leagues is widely reported by insiders.
