CFB With Cole Cubelic, Falcons And Kirk Cousins Silence Philadelphia, Max Gives An Eagles Report Card And Listener Takes

Wednesday, September 18, 202417 takes

Kirk Cousins is back after he silences Philadelphia on Monday Night. Max was in attendance and has a report card from the Linc on this year’s Eagles team. Max and Memes try to negotiate a trade (-). Bryce Young is out as QB1 in Carolina (-). CFB Wednesdays (-). Hot Seat/Cool Throne including Ben Simmons being back to all star caliber based on his offseason workouts (-). SEC Network and former Auburn Tiger Cole Cubelic joins the show to talk College Football, is Georgia in trouble, can anyone match up with Texas and tons more (-). We finish with listener submitted pardon your takes (-).

Cole Cubelic on SEC Dominance, the Eagles' Meltdown, and Bryce Young's Benchings

The vibes in the studio were split down the middle following Monday Night Football. While Kirk Cousins was busy leading a vintage game-winning drive to silence the Linc, Max was sitting in the stands experiencing a slow-motion car crash in real time. The Falcons looked like a completely different team during that final two-minute drill, while the Eagles looked like they were allergic to closing out a game they had won three different times.

Big Cat and PFT were quick to point out that the narrative surrounding the Falcons and their division needs a massive update. The Saints are scoring at will, the Bucs are undefeated, and the Falcons just proved they can win in the most improbable fashion.

The narrative that the NFC South is the worst division in football is officially over

I believe that we officially have to end the narrative that the NFC South is the worst division in football because they have the two and Oh Saints, the one and one Falcons, the two and oh bucks. They're a good division now.

By season's end, the NFC South actually remained one of the weaker divisions statistically, though it was improved from the previous year.

The fallout in Philadelphia is reaching a fever pitch, specifically regarding Nick Sirianni’s decision-making. Between the odd field goal management and the play-calling on the final drive, the heat is officially on in Philly.

Nick Sirianni should have been arrested for not kicking the field goal in the first half

The Eagles could have won if they had kicked that field goal in the first quarter. Which, and it's not, it's not hindsight to say it. I tweeted out at the time that Nick Sirianni should be arrested... I think that just the take that Nick Sirianni should be arrested is applicable to all sorts of different things that he does.

The Eagles lost by one point (22-21). If they had taken a field goal instead of failing on 4th down early in the game, the final score would literally have changed the outcome. The 'arrested' part is obviously metaphorical.

Max, who actually took notes during the game like a true professional, was disgusted by the lack of creativity and the inability to simply grind out a win with the most expensive offensive line in football. Big Cat couldn't wrap his head around why the Eagles didn't just lean on their identity to kill the clock.

The Eagles should have run the ball twice on their final offensive possession

Running the football there... I'll even get crazy here. Ready? Ready for this Max. I think you run it twice and you get a first down because you're the Philadelphia Eagles and no one can stop when you run it with your biggest offensive line in football.

While speculative, the Eagles are known for the 'Tush Push' and have a dominant run game. Running the ball would have burned at least 40 more seconds off the clock, making the Falcons' final drive much more difficult.

Max’s report card for the team was bleak. While he still believes in the talent, the execution on the defensive side of the ball—particularly the pass rush—has him questioning the ceiling of this group.

The 2024 Philadelphia Eagles are most likely an average team

I revised the overall team maybe 18 times before I came to a final version... Not terrible, not great. A possibility to still be good, but most likely average. Like fighting like wild cards. Yeah. Seven seed. Yeah. Six seed.

The Eagles currently have an 11-6 record and are in the playoffs as a wild card, which matches Max's prediction of 'average/wild card' despite the talent.

The Bryce Young Era Ends in Charlotte

The news of Andy Dalton taking over for Bryce Young felt like an execution. The guys didn't hold back on how disastrous the trade with the Bears has become for Carolina, especially with Bryce getting the hook just 18 games into his career. It feels like the Panthers have officially waved the white flag on their massive investment.

The era of Bryce Young in Carolina is officially over

We had the news that Andy Dalton is now the quarterback of the Carolina Panthers. And I feel like it is officially over for Bryce Young. Not really a hot take, but we were talking about it on Sunday. Yeah. When you threw that out there. I was like, the only problem is if you go to and Dalton, I don't know if you can ever go back unless there's an injury, because Andy Dalton is going to be better than Bryce Young.

Young was eventually benched, then started again later in the season due to Dalton's injury/performance. However, the general consensus remains that Young is no longer the long-term franchise answer for Carolina.

PFT floated a theory about why the Panthers might have been hesitant on C.J. Stroud during the draft process, involving some very friendly interactions between Stroud and the Tepper family.

David Tepper chose Bryce Young because C.J. Stroud was 'too close' to his wife

Apparently Mrs. Tepper loved C.J. Stroud. Oh no. Like loved him. He call, oh, he calls her Mama Tepp. Oh no. So that's why David Tepper and then David Tepper is like, wait, I could have C.J. Stroud built like a statue seems real close with Mama Tepp or the short guy. Mm. That's just a real good friend. Wow. He's got a great personality.

This is a comedic conspiracy theory and cannot be factually verified as a motivation for a billion-dollar NFL draft decision.

College Football Wednesday with Cole Cubelic

SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic joined the show to help make sense of a weird Week 3 where Georgia looked human against Kentucky. Cole isn't ready to jump off the Bulldogs' bandwagon yet, but he’s noticed a shift in the physicality of the team compared to their back-to-back title runs.

Georgia is still a playoff team, but they aren't as dominant in the trenches as years past

I think they're holding Carson Beck back a little bit... that offensive line's not what I thought they were gonna be. So they can't just push people around and mash people and they're really not that kind of a group on defense. Now what they do have are freak show monsters on defense that can get you off the edge... but it's just not gonna look as dominant or clean as it has in years past.

Georgia struggled in several SEC games and lost to Alabama and Ole Miss, confirming they were not the untouchable juggernaut of previous seasons.

They also looked ahead to the new SEC landscape, specifically how Texas and Tennessee are positioned. Cole is all-in on the Longhorns being the ultimate matchup nightmare for the rest of the conference because of their depth and Steve Sarkisian's ability to dial up high-percentage looks for whoever is under center.

Texas is a bigger matchup problem for the SEC than any SEC team is for Texas

I don't from a matchup perspective, PFT I don't really know if there's a ton that I look at and just say like from a matchup perspective, like that's, that's rough... I think they're more of a matchup problem for anybody else than anybody else is for them because of how versatile they are offensively the motions they use the formations.

Texas proved to be a dominant force, reaching the SEC Championship game and the CFP, with their only regular season loss coming to Georgia.

While discussing the potential for coaching changes at Florida, the name Urban Meyer inevitably came up. Cole gave a fascinating breakdown of why the "grinder" era of coaching is essentially dead in the NIL and transfer portal world.

Urban Meyer's coaching style would not work in modern college football

I have a ton of respect for Urban, but I don't think his style of coaching is overly conducive with today's college football. He's a grinder. Yeah, absolutely... That's a small portion of why Saban walked away. Like he couldn't coach the guys the way that he wanted to anymore, the way the guys probably need to be coached. But you now you have an out... Rick Trickett... referenced me as the dumbest motherfucker... every single day. You can't do that anymore.

This is a subjective assessment of coaching culture, though Saban's retirement and the failure of other 'old school' coaches in the portal era lend it credibility.

Hot Seat/Cool Throne and Listener Takes

Hot Seat/Cool Throne featured a heavy dose of Diddy news and the bizarre return of the "Ben Simmons is in the best shape of his life" training videos. Big Cat is fully bought into the Ben Simmons hype cycle for the tenth consecutive year, expecting an All-Star return in Brooklyn.

Ben Simmons is back to playing at an All-Star level and is set for a massive bounce-back season

Ben Simmons reportedly is in camp and or at least training. He says Ben Simmons is back to playing all star talent level basketball. Get ready for this boys big season loading. This is the year for Ben.

Ben Simmons continued to struggle with injuries and low production in the 2024-25 season, making this prediction (ironic or not) incorrect.

To wrap things up, PFT addressed the Commanders' lack of offensive touchdowns. He’s so confident that Jayden Daniels will find the end zone in Week 3 that he’s put his digestive system on the line against some very specific Cincinnati cuisine.

I will shotgun a can of Skyline Chili if Jayden Daniels has no touchdowns in Week 3

They challenged me that if Jayden doesn't have any touchdowns again to the third week, I should shotgun a can of Skyline Chili. And I will accept that.

Jayden Daniels accounted for 3 touchdowns (2 passing, 1 rushing) in Week 3 against the Bengals, so PFT did not have to eat the chili.

If the Commanders go touchdown-less again, we’re going to see the first-ever Skyline Chili shotgun in podcast history.

The Eagles defensive line is horrible

I took notes... D-line. Mega bad. [Bryce Huff] is horrible. Like horrendously bad. Like he shouldn't be.

Subjective assessment of defensive line quality, though Bryce Huff's early stats in Philly supported this at the time.

The 2024 Falcons have changed the perspective of the entire franchise

If you're a Falcons fan, this felt like it was a pretty big moment for the franchise. This is, it may have changed your entire perspective on football. Yeah. Because this is, it was the reverse Falcons thing. The Eagles turned into the Falcons.

The Falcons did indeed win the game with a very low win probability, making it a historic turnaround for a franchise known for blowing leads.

Bryce Young's tenure has officially established the floor for how short a quarterback can be

It unfortunately probably puts the limit on height. Now he's officially the floor. We've reached it. We pushed it with Russell Wilson... then Kyler Murray, I think Bryce Young is now the floor of how short you can be as a quarterback.

The next draft cycles will prove if teams shy away from sub-6 foot quarterbacks due to Bryce Young's career path.

Diddy killed Biggie Smalls

Diddy's a bad guy. And my take, I don't, this isn't like an a wildly original one. I think Diddy killed Biggie. Think about it. Think about it... when Biggie died, you remember Diddy was like all over tv. He did that. The video. I'll be missing you. Yeah. Like that he made his entire career about Yeah. Biggie. That is something that a psychopath killer would do.

This is an unproven conspiracy theory that has never been legally substantiated.

Ole Miss vs. Georgia is the most important game for the Rebels' playoff path

I think the Ole Miss game [vs Georgia] probably the most important game there... I don't think 10 and two just guarantees that you're in the playoff with those schedules and if Georgia were to go down to say an Alabama or Texas not near as big of a deal. But I think you can go a little bit further in eliminating Ole Miss with maybe a 10 and two similar record if you're Georgia.

Ole Miss beat Georgia 28-10 on Nov 9, 2024. This win effectively solidified their playoff resume and proved to be their most significant victory of the year.

Tennessee's Dylan Sampson is a lightning rod and an explosive play waiting to happen

The difference right now, Dylan Sampson, it's not Nico [Iamaleava], it's not the receivers. This kid is a lightning rod at tailback explosive play waiting to happen and he presses the line of scrimmage... this kid is big time.

Sampson went on to have a record-breaking season for Tennessee, confirming Cole's high appraisal.
