Cole Cubelic on SEC Dominance, the Eagles' Meltdown, and Bryce Young's Benchings
The vibes in the studio were split down the middle following Monday Night Football. While Kirk Cousins was busy leading a vintage game-winning drive to silence the Linc, Max was sitting in the stands experiencing a slow-motion car crash in real time. The Falcons looked like a completely different team during that final two-minute drill, while the Eagles looked like they were allergic to closing out a game they had won three different times.
Big Cat and PFT were quick to point out that the narrative surrounding the Falcons and their division needs a massive update. The Saints are scoring at will, the Bucs are undefeated, and the Falcons just proved they can win in the most improbable fashion.
The narrative that the NFC South is the worst division in football is officially over
I believe that we officially have to end the narrative that the NFC South is the worst division in football because they have the two and Oh Saints, the one and one Falcons, the two and oh bucks. They're a good division now.
The fallout in Philadelphia is reaching a fever pitch, specifically regarding Nick Sirianni’s decision-making. Between the odd field goal management and the play-calling on the final drive, the heat is officially on in Philly.
Nick Sirianni should have been arrested for not kicking the field goal in the first half
The Eagles could have won if they had kicked that field goal in the first quarter. Which, and it's not, it's not hindsight to say it. I tweeted out at the time that Nick Sirianni should be arrested... I think that just the take that Nick Sirianni should be arrested is applicable to all sorts of different things that he does.
Max, who actually took notes during the game like a true professional, was disgusted by the lack of creativity and the inability to simply grind out a win with the most expensive offensive line in football. Big Cat couldn't wrap his head around why the Eagles didn't just lean on their identity to kill the clock.
The Eagles should have run the ball twice on their final offensive possession
Running the football there... I'll even get crazy here. Ready? Ready for this Max. I think you run it twice and you get a first down because you're the Philadelphia Eagles and no one can stop when you run it with your biggest offensive line in football.
Max’s report card for the team was bleak. While he still believes in the talent, the execution on the defensive side of the ball—particularly the pass rush—has him questioning the ceiling of this group.
The 2024 Philadelphia Eagles are most likely an average team
I revised the overall team maybe 18 times before I came to a final version... Not terrible, not great. A possibility to still be good, but most likely average. Like fighting like wild cards. Yeah. Seven seed. Yeah. Six seed.
The Bryce Young Era Ends in Charlotte
The news of Andy Dalton taking over for Bryce Young felt like an execution. The guys didn't hold back on how disastrous the trade with the Bears has become for Carolina, especially with Bryce getting the hook just 18 games into his career. It feels like the Panthers have officially waved the white flag on their massive investment.
The era of Bryce Young in Carolina is officially over
We had the news that Andy Dalton is now the quarterback of the Carolina Panthers. And I feel like it is officially over for Bryce Young. Not really a hot take, but we were talking about it on Sunday. Yeah. When you threw that out there. I was like, the only problem is if you go to and Dalton, I don't know if you can ever go back unless there's an injury, because Andy Dalton is going to be better than Bryce Young.
PFT floated a theory about why the Panthers might have been hesitant on C.J. Stroud during the draft process, involving some very friendly interactions between Stroud and the Tepper family.
David Tepper chose Bryce Young because C.J. Stroud was 'too close' to his wife
Apparently Mrs. Tepper loved C.J. Stroud. Oh no. Like loved him. He call, oh, he calls her Mama Tepp. Oh no. So that's why David Tepper and then David Tepper is like, wait, I could have C.J. Stroud built like a statue seems real close with Mama Tepp or the short guy. Mm. That's just a real good friend. Wow. He's got a great personality.
College Football Wednesday with Cole Cubelic
SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic joined the show to help make sense of a weird Week 3 where Georgia looked human against Kentucky. Cole isn't ready to jump off the Bulldogs' bandwagon yet, but he’s noticed a shift in the physicality of the team compared to their back-to-back title runs.
Georgia is still a playoff team, but they aren't as dominant in the trenches as years past
I think they're holding Carson Beck back a little bit... that offensive line's not what I thought they were gonna be. So they can't just push people around and mash people and they're really not that kind of a group on defense. Now what they do have are freak show monsters on defense that can get you off the edge... but it's just not gonna look as dominant or clean as it has in years past.
They also looked ahead to the new SEC landscape, specifically how Texas and Tennessee are positioned. Cole is all-in on the Longhorns being the ultimate matchup nightmare for the rest of the conference because of their depth and Steve Sarkisian's ability to dial up high-percentage looks for whoever is under center.
Texas is a bigger matchup problem for the SEC than any SEC team is for Texas
I don't from a matchup perspective, PFT I don't really know if there's a ton that I look at and just say like from a matchup perspective, like that's, that's rough... I think they're more of a matchup problem for anybody else than anybody else is for them because of how versatile they are offensively the motions they use the formations.
While discussing the potential for coaching changes at Florida, the name Urban Meyer inevitably came up. Cole gave a fascinating breakdown of why the "grinder" era of coaching is essentially dead in the NIL and transfer portal world.
Urban Meyer's coaching style would not work in modern college football
I have a ton of respect for Urban, but I don't think his style of coaching is overly conducive with today's college football. He's a grinder. Yeah, absolutely... That's a small portion of why Saban walked away. Like he couldn't coach the guys the way that he wanted to anymore, the way the guys probably need to be coached. But you now you have an out... Rick Trickett... referenced me as the dumbest motherfucker... every single day. You can't do that anymore.
Hot Seat/Cool Throne and Listener Takes
Hot Seat/Cool Throne featured a heavy dose of Diddy news and the bizarre return of the "Ben Simmons is in the best shape of his life" training videos. Big Cat is fully bought into the Ben Simmons hype cycle for the tenth consecutive year, expecting an All-Star return in Brooklyn.
Ben Simmons is back to playing at an All-Star level and is set for a massive bounce-back season
Ben Simmons reportedly is in camp and or at least training. He says Ben Simmons is back to playing all star talent level basketball. Get ready for this boys big season loading. This is the year for Ben.
To wrap things up, PFT addressed the Commanders' lack of offensive touchdowns. He’s so confident that Jayden Daniels will find the end zone in Week 3 that he’s put his digestive system on the line against some very specific Cincinnati cuisine.
I will shotgun a can of Skyline Chili if Jayden Daniels has no touchdowns in Week 3
They challenged me that if Jayden doesn't have any touchdowns again to the third week, I should shotgun a can of Skyline Chili. And I will accept that.
If the Commanders go touchdown-less again, we’re going to see the first-ever Skyline Chili shotgun in podcast history.
