CFB With Ross Dellenger, NBA Trainer Chris Brickley In Studio, Celtics Banner Night, A Bounty For Dunking On Bronny, MNF & Fake Onside Rules + Guys On Chicks

Wednesday, October 23, 202421 takes

Hank is off to see the Celtics raise a banner and we’re expecting Bronny to play and we’ve put a bounty out for anyone who can dunk on both James heads at the same time (-). We talk Monday Night Football and it turns out the Chargers may have some issues even though Justin Herbert isn’t one of them. The Bucs disaster night, The Ravens are a wagon and fake onside rules confusing everyone (-). We talk some CFB then do hot seat/cool throne (-). Yahoo Senior College Football Writer Ross Dellenger joins the show to talk about the scene in Austin Saturday night, the transfer portal flattening competition, a potential super league, Army/Navy and more (-). NBA trainer Chris Brickley joins us in studio to talk about his path to being a trainer, playing for Rick Pitino, Carmelo trusting him and this is finally the year for Ben Simmons (-). We finish with guys on chicks (-).

NBA Trainer Chris Brickley and Ross Dellenger on CFB Super Leagues and the NBA Return

Hank is finally a winner again. With the Celtics raising a banner, the guys recorded early so Hank could get to the Garden and bask in the glory of being a champion for the three-hundredth time this year. While Hank prepared to stay sober for Coach Mazzulla, Big Cat and PFT turned their attention to the Lakers' season opener and the impending debut of Bronny James. Big Cat isn't expecting a Hall of Fame stat line out of the gate.

Bronny James will play two minutes and have one turnover in his NBA debut

I think [Bronny James] bad. Two minutes, one turnover.

In his debut, Bronny played 3 minutes and had 0 points, 1 rebound, and 0 turnovers. Big Cat was very close on minutes but slightly off on the turnover.

PFT took it a step further, officially putting a bounty on the head of the James family for any NBA player brave enough to posterize the rookie.

I'm putting a bounty on anyone who dunks on Bronny James in an NBA game

I'm gonna put a bounty out there. If you can dunk on Bronny, then I will... you get a, an open spot on Pardon My Take and I will say you can join the show as a guest to discuss the dunk. Okay. And I will send you a Pardon My Cheesesteak... with all the fixings.

This is an offer/bounty rather than a prediction. No player publicly claimed this specific PMT bounty during the season.

Monday Night Disasters and the Lamar Juggernaut

Monday Night Football gave us a double-header that mostly served as a funeral for the Buccaneers' season. Between Mike Evans and Chris Godwin going down, and Todd Bowles making some truly questionable analytical decisions, the vibes in Tampa are at an all-time low. PFT was particularly baffled by Bowles' decision to chase points far too early.

Todd Bowles made a massive mistake going for two while down 17 points

I think you would point your finger at the fact that [Todd Bowles] went for two when he was down 17. So if you had gone for one, he'd be down 16... that's two possessions. But you go for two and... if you don't make it, then you are now in a three possession game. So it makes zero sense that Todd Bowles did that.

Mathematically, being down 17 and failing a 2-point conversion makes it a 3-score game (17) vs a 2-score game (16), supporting PFT's logic.

Big Cat thinks the solution is simple: keep the innovator and ditch the defensive specialist who seems to be stuck in a different era.

The Buccaneers should fire Todd Bowles now and make Liam Coen the head coach

Their defense is bad... Liam Coen, their offensive coordinator is seemingly a very good offensive coordinator. If you want to keep him, you should make him the head coach right Now. Just because like Todd Bowles is what he is... I wouldn't let Liam Coen out the door and keep Todd Bowles after the season is over.

The Buccaneers did not fire Todd Bowles mid-season and Coen remained OC for the duration of the 2024 season.

On the other side of that game, the Ravens look like an absolute wagon. Lamar Jackson is playing at a level that has PFT ready to skip the remaining years of his career and send him straight to Canton.

Lamar Jackson is already a Hall of Famer

I, yeah, I think [Lamar Jackson] probably already is [a Hall of Famer]. I'm not saying if Lamar retired right now he's in the Hall of Fame. But I'm saying the way that he's played. If this keeps up Yeah. like anywhere close to what he's been then Yeah, he's the Hall of Famer.

Eligibility for the Hall of Fame is years away, but Jackson's second MVP makes him a near-lock for many analysts.

Ross Dellenger on the Future of College Football

Yahoo Senior College Football Writer Ross Dellenger joined the show to break down the wild scene in Austin and why the SEC is just built differently. From fans throwing bottles to the eventual professionalization of the entire sport, Dellenger provided a glimpse into a future where the current Power Four might just become a separate entity entirely.

College Football will eventually separate into a professionalized premier league model

There's a suggestion that the gaps will grow so big... that there will be a small segment, not 130, maybe not even 70, maybe 40 or 50 that separate off and, and do their own thing. It would be more of a professionalized kind of model. That's the way a lot of folks see this going.

The sport is currently in flux, making this a long-term pending prediction.

As for the current season, the 12-team playoff race is heating up, and Dellenger thinks the field is still far from set. While Indiana is the feel-good story of the Big Ten, their soft schedule means they have zero margin for error.

Indiana needs to finish 11-1 to guarantee a College Football Playoff at-large bid

That would be trouble for them if they drop any other game... I think that there is an argument to be made that, that Indiana basically hasn't played a top 35 40 team in the country. So they really need to go 11-1 probably to get a CFP at large.

Indiana finished 11-1 and secured an at-large bid, proving Ross's benchmark accurate.

Chris Brickley and the Ben Simmons Redemption

NBA trainer Chris Brickley stopped by the studio to talk about his path from being a Louisville walk-on under Rick Pitino to becoming the guy Carmelo Anthony trusted with his career. Brickley has seen it all, and he’s officially the president of the "Ben Simmons is Back" club.

Ben Simmons will have a great season because he is finally healthy

I think the work has been working. He just has to stay healthy. I think he can impact the game so many ways... some guys, you just don't need to be a shooter... Ben Simmons just needs to be healthy, period. He's healthy, he's gonna have a great season. It's that simple.

Simmons continued to struggle with injuries and inconsistency through the early part of the 2024-25 season.

Beyond the Brooklyn redemption tour, Brickley shared some insight into which young stars have leveled up their game this summer. He expects a monster year from the Magic's centerpiece.

Paolo Banchero will be one of the best players in the NBA this season with an improved shot

Paolo Banchero for the magic. He's coming off of his first Allstar season, his shot. I feel like he's gonna be a very good shooter this year. I think that'll change everything for him. I think that'll make him, you know, one of the best players in the league for sure.

Banchero averaged 21.5 PPG, 8.4 RPG, and 5.0 APG in 2025-26, earning an All-Star selection. While he's very good, his shooting (31.4% from 3) hasn't dramatically improved to make him 'one of the best players in the league' at the top tier.

Hot Seat Cool Throne

Hot Seat Cool Throne featured the usual chaos, including Bill Belichick's ongoing media tour where he continues to subtly (and not so subtly) dunk on the Patriots for being soft. PFT threw the NHL on the Hot Seat for their new Lululemon partnership, while Big Cat gave a Cool Throne to the state of Minnesota for having an elite collection of stars.

Minnesota has the coolest collection of athletes of the last 20 years

Minnesota Sports because they recreated the old Randy Moss KG picture with Anthony Edwards and Justin Jefferson. And I know Minnesota sports are sad state, don't win things, but they might have like the coolest collection of athletes in the last 20 years, like compared to anyone else. They had KG, they had Randy Moss, they have Anthony Edwards, they have Justin Jefferson. They had Joe Mauer.

The quality of 'coolness' is inherently subjective.

The show wrapped up with Guys on Chicks and a debate about whether anyone actually cares about the first week of the NBA season. Max, being a Sixers fan currently dealing with Joel Embiid and Paul George already being ruled out, had a very specific viewpoint.

Nobody cares about October basketball

Who gives a fuck about October basketball? ... It matters maybe like 1%.

The value of early-season games is a subjective debate regarding standings vs. load management.

Hopefully, the Celtics' banner doesn't give Hank too much of an ego before Friday's show.

The fumble-through-the-end-zone touchback is a good rule

I stand by my take that. That's a good rule. Yeah. I I like the fumble through the end zone fumble recovered in the end zone for Touchback.

This is a subjective opinion on rule quality.

Jameson Williams should appeal his suspension to strategically miss fewer days around Thanksgiving

Jameson Williams, I, I, I do think that he should appeal it and wait because they play on Thanksgiving. So just wait and do it the week before Thanksgiving and then you only miss five games [days]. You take his suspension Sunday morning at 11:59. His suspension is over on Thursday at like three o'clock.

Jameson Williams did not appeal and served the suspension immediately in late October/early November.

The regular season still matters in the 12-team playoff era

I have not watched a single big time game, whether that be Georgia-Texas, Georgia-Alabama, Oregon-Ohio State, any of these games and thought to myself while watching it, well this is lame 'cause we're gonna see them play again.

This is a subjective opinion on the entertainment value of the games.

Three-loss teams should not be allowed in the 12-team College Football Playoff

The only shitty thing that could happen, and there should be a rule against this, is you should not be allowed in the 12-team playoff if you have three losses... I feel like you need to take an undefeated team that's maybe in a Group of Five conference and put them in instead of a Power Four team with three losses.

No such rule was implemented; multiple three-loss teams were considered for the 2024 playoff.

Georgia is the best team in the SEC

I think we all probably saw the best team in the SEC on Saturday night in, in it's Georgia. It's a healthy Georgia... they got pretty much everybody back against Texas And it showed. And that's, that's what they are. So to me Georgia's probably, you know, the best team in the league.

Georgia finished the regular season with two losses and did not win the SEC championship.

The College Football Playoff is bound to expand to 16 teams

Right now they're at nine or 10% with the 12 team playoff, which I, I think some would probably say is too low, which is why we're probably almost certainly bound eventually for 16 team playoff. 14 teams, 16 teams. Like it's gonna keep expanding.

The playoff is currently 12 teams, but discussions of future expansion are ongoing among leadership.

The 'flattening' of college football is making it a better sport with more parity

The flattening out of college football with the NIL and transfer portal, it's great. It's great because you get, it feels like anyone could beat anyone at this point. And it's not just watching a sport where there are two or three teams that can conceivably win and no one else.

Subjective opinion on the quality of the sport.

Billy Napier and Dave Aranda are the coaches on the hottest seats in college football

Billy Napier would be a 10... [Dave Aranda] probably that's a 10 with Billy.

Surprisingly, both Napier and Aranda were retained for the 2025 season by their respective schools.

Victor Wembanyama will be the future of the league and a multiple-time MVP

Wemby is the future of the league. I think he'll be MVP multiple times... Jamal [Crawford] was telling me, he's like, we've mastered the Melo footwork, we've mastered the Dirk footwork... If he stays healthy, I think he'll be one of the greatest players that we've ever seen.

While likely correct long-term, this will take years to fully verify.
