NBA Trainer Chris Brickley and Ross Dellenger on CFB Super Leagues and the NBA Return
Hank is finally a winner again. With the Celtics raising a banner, the guys recorded early so Hank could get to the Garden and bask in the glory of being a champion for the three-hundredth time this year. While Hank prepared to stay sober for Coach Mazzulla, Big Cat and PFT turned their attention to the Lakers' season opener and the impending debut of Bronny James. Big Cat isn't expecting a Hall of Fame stat line out of the gate.
Bronny James will play two minutes and have one turnover in his NBA debut
I think [Bronny James] bad. Two minutes, one turnover.
PFT took it a step further, officially putting a bounty on the head of the James family for any NBA player brave enough to posterize the rookie.
I'm putting a bounty on anyone who dunks on Bronny James in an NBA game
I'm gonna put a bounty out there. If you can dunk on Bronny, then I will... you get a, an open spot on Pardon My Take and I will say you can join the show as a guest to discuss the dunk. Okay. And I will send you a Pardon My Cheesesteak... with all the fixings.
Monday Night Disasters and the Lamar Juggernaut
Monday Night Football gave us a double-header that mostly served as a funeral for the Buccaneers' season. Between Mike Evans and Chris Godwin going down, and Todd Bowles making some truly questionable analytical decisions, the vibes in Tampa are at an all-time low. PFT was particularly baffled by Bowles' decision to chase points far too early.
Todd Bowles made a massive mistake going for two while down 17 points
I think you would point your finger at the fact that [Todd Bowles] went for two when he was down 17. So if you had gone for one, he'd be down 16... that's two possessions. But you go for two and... if you don't make it, then you are now in a three possession game. So it makes zero sense that Todd Bowles did that.
Big Cat thinks the solution is simple: keep the innovator and ditch the defensive specialist who seems to be stuck in a different era.
The Buccaneers should fire Todd Bowles now and make Liam Coen the head coach
Their defense is bad... Liam Coen, their offensive coordinator is seemingly a very good offensive coordinator. If you want to keep him, you should make him the head coach right Now. Just because like Todd Bowles is what he is... I wouldn't let Liam Coen out the door and keep Todd Bowles after the season is over.
On the other side of that game, the Ravens look like an absolute wagon. Lamar Jackson is playing at a level that has PFT ready to skip the remaining years of his career and send him straight to Canton.
Lamar Jackson is already a Hall of Famer
I, yeah, I think [Lamar Jackson] probably already is [a Hall of Famer]. I'm not saying if Lamar retired right now he's in the Hall of Fame. But I'm saying the way that he's played. If this keeps up Yeah. like anywhere close to what he's been then Yeah, he's the Hall of Famer.
Ross Dellenger on the Future of College Football
Yahoo Senior College Football Writer Ross Dellenger joined the show to break down the wild scene in Austin and why the SEC is just built differently. From fans throwing bottles to the eventual professionalization of the entire sport, Dellenger provided a glimpse into a future where the current Power Four might just become a separate entity entirely.
College Football will eventually separate into a professionalized premier league model
There's a suggestion that the gaps will grow so big... that there will be a small segment, not 130, maybe not even 70, maybe 40 or 50 that separate off and, and do their own thing. It would be more of a professionalized kind of model. That's the way a lot of folks see this going.
As for the current season, the 12-team playoff race is heating up, and Dellenger thinks the field is still far from set. While Indiana is the feel-good story of the Big Ten, their soft schedule means they have zero margin for error.
Indiana needs to finish 11-1 to guarantee a College Football Playoff at-large bid
That would be trouble for them if they drop any other game... I think that there is an argument to be made that, that Indiana basically hasn't played a top 35 40 team in the country. So they really need to go 11-1 probably to get a CFP at large.
Chris Brickley and the Ben Simmons Redemption
NBA trainer Chris Brickley stopped by the studio to talk about his path from being a Louisville walk-on under Rick Pitino to becoming the guy Carmelo Anthony trusted with his career. Brickley has seen it all, and he’s officially the president of the "Ben Simmons is Back" club.
Ben Simmons will have a great season because he is finally healthy
I think the work has been working. He just has to stay healthy. I think he can impact the game so many ways... some guys, you just don't need to be a shooter... Ben Simmons just needs to be healthy, period. He's healthy, he's gonna have a great season. It's that simple.
Beyond the Brooklyn redemption tour, Brickley shared some insight into which young stars have leveled up their game this summer. He expects a monster year from the Magic's centerpiece.
Paolo Banchero will be one of the best players in the NBA this season with an improved shot
Paolo Banchero for the magic. He's coming off of his first Allstar season, his shot. I feel like he's gonna be a very good shooter this year. I think that'll change everything for him. I think that'll make him, you know, one of the best players in the league for sure.
Hot Seat Cool Throne
Hot Seat Cool Throne featured the usual chaos, including Bill Belichick's ongoing media tour where he continues to subtly (and not so subtly) dunk on the Patriots for being soft. PFT threw the NHL on the Hot Seat for their new Lululemon partnership, while Big Cat gave a Cool Throne to the state of Minnesota for having an elite collection of stars.
Minnesota has the coolest collection of athletes of the last 20 years
Minnesota Sports because they recreated the old Randy Moss KG picture with Anthony Edwards and Justin Jefferson. And I know Minnesota sports are sad state, don't win things, but they might have like the coolest collection of athletes in the last 20 years, like compared to anyone else. They had KG, they had Randy Moss, they have Anthony Edwards, they have Justin Jefferson. They had Joe Mauer.
The show wrapped up with Guys on Chicks and a debate about whether anyone actually cares about the first week of the NBA season. Max, being a Sixers fan currently dealing with Joel Embiid and Paul George already being ruled out, had a very specific viewpoint.
Nobody cares about October basketball
Who gives a fuck about October basketball? ... It matters maybe like 1%.
Hopefully, the Celtics' banner doesn't give Hank too much of an ego before Friday's show.
