Championship Sunday: Chiefs and Niners Rematch Set After Lions All-Time Collapse
Championship Sunday delivered exactly what we expected: pure, unadulterated heartbreak and the realization that Patrick Mahomes is simply inevitable. Big Cat and PFT Commenter kick things off with a rowdy Fastest 2 Minutes before diving into a day that saw the Ravens forget how to run the football and the Lions forget how to catch it. While the world might be feeling some Chiefs fatigue, there is no denying the historic run we are witnessing.
The Chiefs Stifle Baltimore
The AFC Championship was a defensive masterclass by Steve Spagnuolo. While Mahomes started hot, the story was the Chiefs' defense completely erasing Lamar Jackson and the Ravens' identity. Todd Monken seemed to panic after the first quarter, abandoning a run game that had been the league's best all season. Big Cat was quick to give Spags his flowers for another legendary postseason performance.
Steve Spagnuolo is one of the best defensive coordinators of all time
Steve Spagnuolo, he is probably one of, if not the best defensive coordinators of all time. When you think about what he's done, he is got three Super Bowls. He stopped the [2007] Patriots, one of the best offenses of all time... held the Ravens, one of the best teams this year in terms of offense, completely befuddled the MVP of the league.
Lamar Jackson's struggles in the big moment are going to be the talk of the offseason. Between the Zay Flowers fumble at the goal line and Lamar throwing into triple coverage, it was a comedy of errors for a team that looked like a juggernaut just a week ago. PFT pointed out that the blame shouldn't fall solely on the MVP's shoulders, though he certainly took the lion's share.
Lamar Jackson and Todd Monken share the blame 70/30 for the Ravens' loss
I'm giving 70% of the blame to Lamar and then 30% to Todd Monken.
Despite the offensive lull in the second half, Mahomes' leadership stood out. He never threw his young receivers under the bus during their mid-season struggles, and it paid off with MVS and Rashee Rice making clutch plays when it mattered most. Big Cat noted how that patience built the foundation for this Super Bowl run.
Patrick Mahomes' leadership was the key to his young receivers' success
He deserves a ton of credit because what Patrick Mahomes never did this entire season is give any type of complaint publicly about his wide receivers. And it's paying off now because he basically stood in front of the bullets for these guys to suck for the majority of the year... and get a Rashee Rice to a point where he's like an actually really good receiver.
Lions Bite Their Own Kneecaps
In the NFC, the Detroit Lions played a perfect first half only to suffer one of the most horrific collapses in playoff history. Dan Campbell’s signature aggression, which got them to the brink of the Super Bowl, finally backfired in the eyes of the public. However, Big Cat and PFT defended the process, noting that you don't change who you are once you reach the big stage.
Dan Campbell's aggression is why the Lions were in the championship game
The whole reason the Lions are in this spot is because of his aggression. That's how he coaches the team. That's how he's built the team... I agree with you. I don't hate that [fourth down] call because I really think people are just forgetting the fact they do not like or trust their kicker.
Between a ball bouncing off a defender's face mask into Brandon Aiyuk's hands and Jahmyr Gibbs fumbling deep in his own territory, the second half was a nightmare for Detroit. Meanwhile, Brock Purdy did enough with his legs and timely throws to silence some of the "game manager" talk, at least for one night.
Brock Purdy is on track to be a franchise quarterback
If Brock Purdy was taken with like a top 10 pick... I think we'd be like, Purdy is good showing signs of living up to his draft status... I think he's probably on track to be a franchise quarterback.
Who's Back and Grudge Bookmarks
Transitioning into Who's Back of the Week, the guys talk about the absolute scene at Providence for Ed Cooley’s return and the general chaos of college basketball. Big Cat is officially "unsafe" again, buying into a Wisconsin team that he knows will eventually break his heart.
The Wisconsin Badgers are going on a miracle run in March
I am all in on the Badgers. They're good... and I'm believing, I'm believing in a miracle March run. I'm usually pretty honest about where my heart is... I'm gonna be unsafe in March. If they keep playing the way they're playing, I'm gonna be emotionally unsafe.
Max tried to claim Arizona would handle the Badgers, but Big Cat was ready with the history books, reminding everyone that the desert is usually where Wisconsin dreams come true while Arizona fans hide under their beds.
Every Arizona fan is scared to play Wisconsin in the tournament
Every Arizona fan heard you say that and like, Max is the dumbest person ever. He doesn't know ball. Every Arizona fan is scared of Wisconsin. That's a fact... We whooped them twice in the Elite Eight to go to the Final Four.
The show wraps up with a look at the NBA, specifically Joel Embiid continuing his tradition of missing games in Denver. Big Cat wasn't buying the injury report for a second.
Joel Embiid ducked Nikola Jokic in Denver
We were robbed of Joel Embiid playing in Denver against Jokic. 15 minutes before the game, he's like, no, I don't wanna play. I wanna duck... He hasn't played in Denver since 2019. He likes to play Jokic at home and then he's an 'out' guy... when they get to Denver, his knee hurts.
We're heading to Vegas for a rematch that has Hank calling his shot early. If the Chiefs play the way they did in Baltimore, it's hard to see anyone stopping them.
The Chiefs will easily beat the 49ers in Super Bowl 58
The Chiefs are gonna blow past the 49ers in the [Super Bowl]. They just find a way. They find a way and they have completely changed.
Just remember, if you see a ladybug on your shoe this week, bet the house on the Niners.
