Dan Steinberg (Featuring Live Phone Call to Chris Cooley) And Ray Ratto 05/11/2016

Wednesday, May 11, 201616 takes

The guys do some PMT housecleaning, talk about the annual May death of the Capitals, Riley Curry being back and the Thunder/Spurs series featuring another blown call. Ray Ratto from CSN Bay Area joins the show to talk about the Warriors and Steph Curry's MVP season. Dan Steinberg from the Washington Post joins the show to talk Bryce Harper and the first ever PMT interview within an interview occurs when he calls former Washington Redskin Chris Cooley. Segments include "People Forget That", "What's Hot In The Streets With Hank", and a breakdown of the Rovell Vs. Dana White fight.

Ray Ratto on Steph Curry and a Surprise Call to Chris Cooley

The Washington Capitals are dead again, and PFT Commenter is taking it about as well as you’d expect. It’s a May tradition unlike any other: the Caps look like world-beaters in the regular season only to provide their fans with a slow-motion car crash in the second round. Big Cat isn't offering much sympathy, instead pointing the finger at the face of the franchise.

Alexander Ovechkin deserves the heat for the Capitals failing in the playoffs

I'm going to blame Ovi... Call me a dumb fan. That's fine. Call me a dumb fan... But if you want to be a top player in any league, you're going to get this heat. It just happens. It happens to every guy. It happened to Peyton Manning. It's happened to A-Rod.

The Capitals lost the series to the Penguins shortly after this, further solidifying the 'choker' narrative for Ovechkin until 2018.

While the hockey world mourns, the NBA is being set on fire by a unanimous MVP. Ray Ratto joined the show from a crowded airport to explain why Steph Curry is basically a mythological destroyer of worlds. Ratto argued that while the highlights are great, the most impressive part of Steph’s season happened in the voting booth.

Steph Curry getting 131 media members to agree on anything is more extraordinary than his play

The news on this press conference is not that he won. It's that he managed to get 131 media people to agree to the same thing at the same time because that's far more extraordinary than scoring 17 points in an overtime game.

Curry did indeed become the first unanimous MVP in NBA history.

Ray Ratto didn't stop there. He leaned into the chaos, suggesting that the Warriors might actually have a long-standing Curry problem dating back to a specific trade.

Steph Curry has been a detriment to the Warriors for years

I think Curry has been a detriment to this team for several years now. From the moment that he forced them to trade the eminently superior Monta Ellis.

The Warriors became a dynasty after trading Monta Ellis and building around Steph Curry.

Despite the Warriors' dominance, Big Cat is starting to see a path for LeBron James and the Cavaliers. While everyone has been focused on 73 wins in the West, the Cavs have been quietly dismantling the East. Big Cat thinks the lack of respect might be exactly what Cleveland needs to pull off the upset.

The Cavaliers could beat the Warriors in the Finals

The entire season has been about the Warriors and then a little bit about the Spurs. The Cavs, they can do like the whole nobody believes in us shit, which is unreal with a guy like LeBron on your team. And I don't know, man. I wouldn't be shocked if they beat the Warriors. I really wouldn't.

The Cavaliers did indeed beat the 73-win Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals after trailing 3-1.

A huge part of that confidence comes from the most statistically dominant player in postseason history. According to Big Cat, the math simply doesn't lie when it comes to Kevin Love’s impact on a series.

Kevin Love is the best player of all time because he is 12-0 in the playoffs

People forget that Kevin Love is undefeated in the NBA playoffs... He's undefeated. 12-0. The Cavs literally never lost with Kevin Love. Kevin Love has literally never lost in the playoffs. He's maybe the best player of all time.

Kevin Love did eventually lose a playoff game later that year in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Raptors.

The episode took a legendary turn during an interview with Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. While discussing Bryce Harper’s recent ejection and his habit of blocking local media on Twitter, the conversation shifted to famous contacts. Steinberg revealed he had Chris Cooley’s number, leading to the first-ever PMT interview within an interview.

Cooley picked up and immediately started riffing with PFT Commenter about wrestling in a Fox robot costume and his potential NFL comeback. The former tight end was surprisingly candid about his current standing in the league.

I could still play in the NFL, but I'm too washed up to get an invite

I think that I probably could [play]... [but] I got no real invites. I'm too washed up, man. Too much of a has-been.

Cooley remained retired and never received another NFL training camp invite.

Before letting the DC legend go, Big Cat tried to facilitate a new career move for Cooley: joining a New York men’s league flag football team alongside Pat McAfee. Cooley seemed more interested in the roofies and beer pong than the actual football, which is exactly why he’s a friend of the program.

Things got heated during the segments as the guys broke down the brewing feud between Darren Rovell and Dana White. Usually, the guys are the first to clown on Rovell for his obsession with brand synergy and stadium food prices, but in a battle between the ultimate nerd and the ultimate jock, Big Cat is rocking with the spreadsheet king.

I side with Darren Rovell over Dana White

Ravel and Dana White are in a fight, which is the nerd and the jock. I obviously side with Ravel here. It seems as though he's in the right.

Correct. The UFC was sold in July 2016 for approximately $4 billion, confirming Rovell's report that Dana White had initially denied.

To wrap things up, Big Cat revisited an old flame: his belief that he could take a punch from the greatest boxer of our generation. Despite PFT Commenter’s skepticism, Big Cat remains convinced that a three-month neck-training camp is all that stands between him and glory.

I could knock out Floyd Mayweather in a punch-for-punch fight

Punch for punch. I get three months to train my neck... Punch for punch. I could knock out Floyd Mayweather. People forget Floyd Mayweather is like 140 pounds, and I'm like 230, baby... As long as I can train my neck, that's the only stipulation I get.

While untested, it's widely considered delusional by sports fans, though the physics of a 100lb weight difference in a 'no-defense' punch contest are debated.

If we see Big Cat wearing a weighted sombrero to the office next week, we’ll know the training has officially begun.

I'm dreading the Capitals' inevitable playoff exit more than ever

I should schedule a reminder in my phone that goes off this week every year saying, okay, schedule some time with your therapist... this is the gut punch that I get every year and I've gotten it for the last 15 years.

The Capitals lost Game 6 in overtime to the Penguins, ending their season yet again.

The best way to beat the Warriors is to put Kawhi Leonard on Steph Curry

You have Kawhi Leonard guard Stephen Curry and basically make everybody else beat you... while Leonard is not as good a defender as Curry is an offensive player, he's as close as anybody in this league is going to get.

While effective, the Spurs never actually beat the Warriors in a series during this era.

The NBA deserves bad officiating because they retired the great iconoclasts like Joey Crawford

Joey Crawford's retirement is one of the darkest moments in what has been a pretty lackluster season... Officiating in the NBA was better with two guys who knew what they were doing... now they get Scott Fosters. Now they get Tony Brothers. They deserve it. They deserve to have nothing but crappy officiating from now until the end of time.

The NHL should ban players from diving to block shots

He [my dad] doesn't think that they should allow players to dive to block shots in the NHL anymore because he likes more goals... a lot of hockey lifers are going to disagree with me because it's like you get the bruises on your body. That's how you know you're a hockey player.

This rule change was never implemented and is widely considered antithetical to hockey culture.

I'm sick of eSports being pushed on regular people

i'm not into esports but i am into drone racing... Esports are for all the people who think the NFL is going away... Let's have a bunch of nerds play video games and we'll watch and we'll take over for all of our, you know, sports that we've loved for 100 years. Get the fuck out of here, man. I'm sick of the esports thing. I really am.

A football team of active military troops would dominate the NFL

I can't be the only one who thinks if the troops wanted to, they could put together a football team and dominate the NFL.

A group of soldiers, while physically fit, would not be able to compete with professional NFL players who specialize in the sport.
