Jim Harbaugh on Podcasting, Plus Blake Griffin and Sam Dekker
Football is officially back, and the energy in the studio was electric as Big Cat and PFT Commenter broke down the first Sunday of the NFL season. The show kicked off with the return of the Fastest 2 Minutes, featuring everything from "Frat Stafford" shutting down the Cardinals to the Jaguars' defensive line ending the Tom Savage era in a single half. While the guys were thrilled to have the Red Zone channel back in their lives, Big Cat had a quick reminder for anyone getting too confident in their picks.
Gambling on the NFL is the hardest thing in the entire world
And two, gambling on the NFL is the hardest thing in the entire world, and no one should ever do it because it's god-awful.
They also took a look at the landscape of the league after just one week, specifically noting how the hierarchy has shifted in certain NFL families. With JJ Watt dealing with a gruesome finger injury, PFT thinks there is a new king in the family.
TJ Watt is currently the man carrying the torch for the Watt family
I think we need to do a torch update just on the Watt family. Who is carrying the torch? Whose man is carrying the torch in the Watt family right now? Because I think it's TJ.
Jim Harbaugh: The Pod-Father
Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh joined the show to discuss his team's big win over Florida and his own foray into the world of podcasting with "Attack Each Day." Harbaugh officially dubbed Big Cat and PFT the "Pod-Fathers" and shared his unique philosophy on why training camp is better than the regular season. For Harbaugh, game days aren't about fun—they are about survival. He likened the experience of coaching a game to sitting in a dentist's chair for three and a half hours for a root canal, only finding joy in the pure six hours of celebration that follow a victory.
To win a championship you need a great QB, great defense, and a reliable kicker
I've always thought this. When it comes to winning a championship, you need a great quarterback, a good defense, and a field goal kicker that can make field goals. Or a good quarterback, a great defense, and a field goal kicker that can make field goals.
Before letting him go, Big Cat tried to find common ground with the Michigan coach. While Big Cat might not be ready to wear maize and blue, they found a shared adversary.
I hate Ohio State
The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right? ... I hate Ohio State.
Hot Seat Appeals Court
In a PMT first, Blake Griffin and Sam Dekker called in from San Diego to refute their spots on the Hot Seat. Sam Dekker had to answer for why Aaron Rodgers was photographed fixing his kitchen sink. Dekker’s defense was that he simply didn't realize the disposal was unplugged, which didn't exactly help his "man card" status.
Blake Griffin then took the stand to defend his decision to wear jeans on the beach. He argued that he was at a restaurant and only stepped into the sand for two minutes, which he believes exonerates him from the fashion crime. Despite being a Clippers star, Blake stayed loyal to his Sooners roots when looking ahead to the college football slate.
Oklahoma will beat Ohio State 28-21
I'm going to say 28-21 Oklahoma [over Ohio State]. ... It's going to suck, but I got to be confident, you know. You got to support your squad.
Who's Back and Football Guy of the Week
The guys wrapped up the weekend recap with a loaded Who's Back. While PFT focused on Wikipedia vandalism, Big Cat went on a passionate tangent about his musical tastes, specifically his newfound appreciation for Kesha's latest album over the other pop titans.
I'm a Kesha guy over Taylor Swift or Katy Perry
And I want to officially go on the record when people say, are you Taylor Swift or Katy Perry guy? I'm a Kesha guy through and through.
For Football Guy of the Week, candidates included Doug Marone—who claims he only dreams about his wife—and Chuck Pagano, who managed to credit the wrong team after a blowout loss. The segment also touched on the tragic reality of being a Browns fan, as a certain division rival continues to treat Cleveland's home turf like his own backyard.
Ben Roethlisberger owns Cleveland's stadium as a quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger is now the winningest quarterback in Cleveland Browns Stadium history, which opened in 1999. more wins than any Browns quarterback. So he's got 11, and that officially passes Derek Anderson, who had 10.
Week 1 gave us plenty to chew on, but the pressure is already mounting for the teams that stumbled out of the gate.
Week 2 in the NFL is a must-win for 0-1 teams because 95% of playoff teams avoid 0-2
So 95% of playoff teams avoid going 0-2. So if you do the math, that makes week two a must win.
Next time someone asks you to fix their sink, just make sure they aren't an NFL MVP first.
