JJ Watt on Retirement, LeBron's Record, and Max's $19k Super Bowl Ticket
We are officially in the thick of Super Bowl week in Arizona, and Big Cat and PFT are coming to you live from the C4 studio. Between Max's escalating heart rate over the Eagles and the news of LeBron James closing in on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's scoring title, there was plenty to cover before getting to the main event: the first post-retirement interview with future Hall of Famer JJ Watt.
LeBron's Record and the Stat Compiler Label
LeBron James is on the verge of history, but the guys aren't exactly ready to hand over the GOAT crown. PFT was quick to point out that while the total points are impressive, there's a certain level of longevity and volume that colors the achievement.
LeBron James is the greatest stat compiler of all time
Great job, LeBron. I'm happy for you. You know LeBron, he's had quite a week... kind of a ball hog. But that's fine. You, you are a stat compiler. You're the greatest stat compiler of all time.
Big Cat, ever the historian and hater of missed opportunities for drama, suggested that LeBron should have manipulated the schedule to make the moment even more poetic by waiting for a specific opponent.
If LeBron James is a true historian, he will wait to break the scoring record against the Bucks
The only thing he could say is if LeBron is a true historian of the game, he would wait to break it against the Bucks. The only other team that Kareem played for. So Lakers bucks playing on Thursday night.
Not to be outdone by current history, PFT looked toward the future of the league with a massive projection for the next big thing coming from France.
Victor Wembanyama will be better than LeBron James was at his peak
We actually, we should get credit in the media because like we were so right about LeBron James we called it. And guess what I'm calling it right now? Wembanyama is gonna be great. Yeah. He's gonna be, he's gonna even be better than LeBron at his peaks.
Hot Seat, Cool Throne, and a $19,000 Purchase
Hot Seat/Cool Throne hit on everything from Aaron Rodgers’ impending "darkness retreat" to Tom Brady’s gap year. Big Cat isn't buying the idea that TB12 is actually done with the gridiron just yet, especially with the Fox broadcasting gig being pushed back a year.
Tom Brady is not actually retired
This was my hot seat because I actually think it's hot seat. The Tom Brady retirement. He's not, he's spending an entire year off. He's basically admitting that he's not gonna start broadcasting games till 2024. He's not retired... This feels like he's just leaving the door a little bit open.
Meanwhile, the Rodgers saga continues to be the most Rodgers thing ever. PFT is confident that no amount of sensory deprivation will make a man walk away from a fifty-million-dollar paycheck.
Aaron Rodgers will play in the NFL in 2023 for $50 million despite his 'darkness retreat'
I can save you. You don't have to have your brain exert the chemical that's reserved for you when you die to pacify you... to know that Yes, you do want to play football for one more year for 50 million.
Speaking of money, Big Cat officially pulled the trigger on Super Bowl tickets for Max and Memes. The total damage? A cool $18,960. Max is currently alternating between pure confidence and the realization that Nick Sirianni is facing a game he simply cannot afford to drop.
The Super Bowl is a 'can't lose' game for Nick Sirianni, not a 'must win'
I disagree. You think it's can't lose? They're Yeah, it's a can't lose. Because if you, if you lose, then what? ... If you're Nick Sirianni, you lose the Super Bowl, you're gonna be known as Super Bowl losing head coach. You can't, you cannot lose that game if you're Nick Sirianni.
JJ Watt in Studio
The highlight of the show was JJ Watt joining Big Cat and PFT for an hour-long breakdown of his career and his new life as a retiree. After years of the "Uh Oh, Hey JJ" bit and eventually becoming a friend of the program, it felt like a full-circle moment. PFT led the introduction with a backhanded compliment that only he could pull off.
JJ Watt is a significantly better football player than he is a person
A lot of people will say like, JJ Watt great player, all-time player, even better person. That's bullshit. You're a way better football player than you are a person and you're a pretty good person.
JJ was incredibly candid about his peak years in Houston. While some legends are defined by how long they played, JJ knows that at his absolute summit, there wasn't a single person on the planet who could block him.
I'm the greatest defender ever for a single season or game
For one single game? Or are you talking about for one single season that which player would you want? Because that's different. I mean, I'm, I'm never gonna argue for the longevity of my career... But for one season or one game, I, I'll, I'll put myself in that argument.
He gave some serious flowers to the offensive linemen who actually gave him trouble, specifically highlighting the "vet savvy" of Trent Williams.
Trent Williams is the best at using a defender's momentum and 'vet savvy' against them
One of the guys that does that [using tricks] very well, as Trent Williams. Trent does, he has some tricks and, and things to his game that are just very, very smart, very vet savvy... [he'll] just knock your hands down and you'll fall flat on your face.
We also got some Watt family updates, including JJ’s admission that his younger brother might actually have the higher ceiling when it's all said and done.
T.J. Watt will be a better player than me if he stays healthy
If he stays healthy and, and I, I hope he stays healthy and I hope he does. He'll break every record I got and he'll absolutely be a better player than me. There's no doubt for a single season, for a single, like being able to do everything. I I I won't give up that title.
As a Wisconsin legend, JJ is fully on board with the new era in Madison. He and Big Cat are already dreaming of what the Badgers can accomplish under new leadership.
Luke Fickell is building a monster at the University of Wisconsin
Luke Fickell building a monster. Looking forward to that. ... We have more quarterbacks in the room now than we've had our entire history ever. I don't understand. I have no clue what's going on.
Finally, with the 2028 Hall of Fame class already looking crowded, JJ is already thinking about the logistics of the induction ceremony. He’s happy to let Brady have the spotlight, as long as he doesn't have to follow him to the podium.
The Hall of Fame should give me a speaking slot before Tom Brady so I don't have to follow him
I don't want the last speech. Oh, have no interest in the last speech. Okay. So see, I can, like, I can just fluff it up for Tom and let him hit it out of the park. I can give him all like the, the praise and everything and then just let him maybe say like a quick sentence about me before he gets into Yeah. Thanking everybody.
If the Eagles lose on Sunday, we might need to check on Max's $19,000 worth of emotional stability.
