Joey Harrington on Saban, Petrino, and the Lions; MNF Recap and Guys on Chicks
Monday Night Football gave the guys plenty to chew on as the Rams looked like they might finally be shaking the fraud allegations. Matthew Stafford was throwing absolute dimes against a good team, but the real story might have been the physical stature of the opposing quarterback. Big Cat noticed some issues with Kyler Murray's performance that seemed directly related to his height.
Kyler Murray's height causes some of his interceptions
Kyler Murray does have interceptions where he's too short... it's not even that he couldn't see over Leonard Floyd. It's like, he didn't understand that Leonard Floyd could easily jump up and catch that because Leonard Floyd's that much taller.
PFT was quick to offer a counter-point, suggesting that being compact actually has its perks when there are 300-pounders trying to take your head off every snap.
Kyler Murray's height helps him duck under sacks
He's able to duck under sacks more easily because he's five, ten or five nine or whatever... sometimes its height works to his advantage in a weird way.
While Kyler was ducking under pressure, Aaron Donald was busy wrecking everything in his path. The performance was so dominant that it sparked a conversation about how we actually track defensive stats. If a lineman is so good that the only way to stop him is a bear hug, that should probably show up on the box score.
Blatant holds against Aaron Donald should count as sacks
Blatant holds should count as sacks for the defensive lineman... the guy had to wrestle Aaron Donald to the ground. That was the only way that he wasn't going to give up a sack.
Big Cat is officially back on the Stafford train, even suggesting that we're looking at a future gold jacket candidate if he keeps this up.
Matthew Stafford is a Hall of Famer
That was the Hall of Fame, Matt Stafford that I hope gets there. So I can pull up a tweet from five years ago saying you were going to be in this.
Hot Seat/Cool Throne
Hank is officially out on the Atlantic Coast Conference. Beyond the obvious Duke bias, the conference is struggling to keep its head above water in the early basketball season, especially when it comes to games they literally paid to win.
The ACC is a bad basketball conference this year
My hot seat is the ACC... they're the only team [Duke] that's even decent in the ACC... they've lost six buy games.
Meanwhile, PFT put the entire concept of manners on the Hot Seat after a story broke regarding Dan Snyder’s pettiness with Bruce Allen. Apparently, Snyder was so starved for validation that he tried to make a congratulatory text message a legal requirement in a lawsuit settlement.
Billy brought some international flavor to Hot Seat, highlighting two Brazilian politicians who decided that instead of a debate, they would just settle their differences in a three-round MMA fight.
U.S. politicians should settle disputes in MMA matches
Two politicians down in Brazil... had a three round MMA fight, which was sick... I really wish I kinda wish that would happen more in the United States and other places.
Joey Harrington
Oregon legend Joey Harrington joined the show for an incredible look back at a career that was much weirder than most fans remember. Harrington is incredibly well-adjusted, but he didn't hold back on the absolute chaos he witnessed in Detroit, Miami, and Atlanta. He started by reminding everyone that before he was the third pick in the draft, he was just a kid trying to get his stats up in the greatest sports game ever.
NCAA Football is the greatest video game ever made
That college football game was the greatest game in the history of video games... maybe Tecmo Super Bowl [is close]... but it's up there.
Joey provided some fascinating insight into the difference between a coach like Nick Saban and a coach like Bobby Petrino. While Saban was intense, Harrington respected the transparency and the way the legendary coach handled the professional locker room.
Nick Saban's coaching success is built on preparation and accountability rather than flexibility
He will adjust and he will recognize what he needs to do week to week. But there's a foundation that exists... It is all preparation... a hundred percent accountability. He expects accountability and he shows accountability. And there are plenty of times when he stood up [to the media] and says, no, that's on me. I didn't get them prepared well enough.
On the flip side, the Bobby Petrino era in Atlanta was a total disaster from the jump. Harrington described the infamous "note on the locker" and Petrino's total inability to manage a room full of veterans who knew more about the NFL than he did.
Bobby Petrino was completely ill-equipped to be an NFL coach
[Bobby Petrino] was unprepared to be an NFL coach. I mean, that's the thing... we had a team of vets... and to have the audacity to challenge what it is that I'm trying to say [by adding more plays]... that's not how you operate. And then to literally drop... a note on your locker and say peace I'm out of here... he was unprepared.
Big Cat couldn't help but wonder if Joey's professional trajectory would have changed if he had just adopted a more "adult" name upon entering the league.
Dropping the 'y' from his name would have helped Joey Harrington's professional career
Do you think the fact that you went by Joey as a professional, as a grown man hurt you at all?... Joey Harrington is a great college football name. I think when you get drafted, you dropped the why and you go as Joe Harrington.
The conversation wrapped with some quarterback psychology. Harrington explained that at the NFL level, everyone has the arm talent, but the mental side of the game is what actually separates the starters from the backups. He even weighed in on the current situation in Miami, urging the organization to stick by their guy.
Tua Tagovailoa will be successful if the Dolphins support him and stop trying to replace him
They need to make sure they're supporting Tua because he's shown that he can do it... Make sure you support that guy, and he could be [successful].
Guys on Chicks and the Numbers
The show closed out with the return of Guys on Chicks, featuring a listener whose boyfriend is so addicted to his Nintendo Switch that he’s bringing it to dinner with future in-laws and trying to win a Grand Prix during intimate moments. Billy tried to wrap things up with a Kyler Murray comparison to Madden 09, but the real drama was the lottery ball. Jake Marsh is officially under investigation for being a system player after yet another win.
Check the tire pressure and keep the vibes high.
