Julian Edelman and Bruce Arians on Jets, Dodgers, and QB Development
The vibes are high following a bizarre Thursday Night Football win for the New York Jets. Big Cat and PFT are trying to wrap their heads around how a team can look so fundamentally broken for thirty minutes and then suddenly look like a playoff contender. While Aaron Rodgers finally found a rhythm with Davante Adams, it was Garrett Wilson’s gravity-defying shin-catch that stole the show. PFT is ready to buy all the stock in the green and white again.
The Jets will win three straight games and reach a 6-6 record
I know [the Jets] are all the way back. I think the Jets are gonna win three straight right now... I think we're gonna turn around and the jets are gonna be, they're gonna be six and six.
Memes isn't quite as optimistic, even in victory. He's still reeling from a first half that featured more bloopers than highlights, including a Malachi Corley touchdown celebration that ended at the one-yard line. For Memes, the win doesn't mask the deeper issues within the organization.
The New York Jets are the worst coached football team of all time
This is also the worst coach football team of all time. Oh, that's a lot of, all times. There's so many All times.
The Yankees Meltdown and Dodgers Dynasty
Turning to the diamond, Big Cat and PFT break down the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series clincher. The conversation quickly shifts from the Dodgers' brilliance to the New York Yankees' historic defensive collapse in Game 5. Between Aaron Judge’s dropped fly ball and Gerrit Cole forgetting to cover first base, it was a masterclass in how to lose a championship in one inning. Big Cat notes that the Dodgers simply operated on a different level of competence.
The Dodgers won the World Series because they are a fundamentally better team than the Yankees
The Dodgers did it by just being the better team and being the fundamentally better team. Because like, if you look at it... the Dodgers did, don't make mistakes like the Yankees made mistakes. And that showed a hundred percent in game five when the Yankees had a complete and utter meltdown.
Beyond the fundamentals, the guys discuss the "new" identity of the Dodgers. With Shohei Ohtani and a roster full of All-Stars, they’ve officially stepped into the role the Yankees used to occupy: the big-spending empire that everyone loves to hate.
The Dodgers are the new Yankees because they keep adding the best players to an already elite roster
The Dodgers are the new Yankees. That was the, that was the big thing. Like the the Dodgers. The Dodgers already had a super team and they're like, you know what we're gonna do? We're gonna add Shohei [Ohtani]. That's what the Yankees used to do. Yeah. So like that's, that's the Dodgers are the new Yankees and they, and they played fundamental Ball better than anyone else. They were the best team by far.
Week 9 Picks and Preview
As the NFL hits the halfway point, the board is heating up. Big Cat is eyeing a focused Baltimore team looking to bounce back from a shocking loss to the Browns. While the Broncos have been a great story, the spread suggests the Ravens are ready to remind everyone who the heavyweight is in the AFC.
The Ravens will beat the Broncos in a focused effort following their loss to the Browns
I think the Ravens are gonna be very focused. Broncos riding high and you see that nine point spread and you're like, oof, that's easy. It's a lot of points. Broncos are, are five and three. How are they nine point underdogs. I agree with you. Like I said, if the Ravens had won last week, I would probably be leaning heavy to the Broncos.
In the AFC East, the Bills continue to hold a psychological edge over the Dolphins. PFT is expecting Josh Allen to use his legs early and often in Buffalo, continuing his streak of dominance against Tua and company.
Josh Allen will score a rushing touchdown and have a big day on the ground against the Dolphins
I think Josh Allen's gonna have a big day with his feet too. Yeah. I think he's gonna just, he's gonna take off, he's gonna run some people over. Josh Allen touchdown this weekend.
Meanwhile, in Dallas, the wheels are officially falling off. The guys look at the Cowboys' lack of a run game and the general lack of explosiveness in an offense that used to be a juggernaut. Big Cat points to the lack of production from the backfield as a primary reason for their struggles.
Ezekiel Elliott is completely washed up
Zeke is completely washed by the way. Zeke is completely washed. He's the only running back with 30 Carries who has yet to break or miss a tackle according to Sports Info Solutions.
Julian Edelman on "Dudes" and the Lions
Julian Edelman joins the show to talk about his new podcast, *Dudes on Dudes*, and to break down the current state of the league. Edelman offers a fascinating look at the Lions, noting that while they are elite, the loss of Aidan Hutchinson changes their ceiling in the postseason. He’s also looking for Dan Campbell to start coaching like a favorite rather than an underdog.
Dan Campbell needs to evolve and stop taking unnecessary risks like fake punts
I love Dan Campbell, but he needs to evolve his play color. His, his, his coaching style. He, he, he can't act like he's a the hunter anymore. He's being hunted. You know, you, you're the good team. Your culture's in place. We don't have to run a fake punt in the opening drive... when you, me, everyone in the goddamn stadium knew it was gonna be a fake fucking punt.
Edelman also shares some love for Matthew Stafford, calling him one of the most gifted throwers the game has ever seen. He argues that Stafford's longevity and talent should have him in the Hall of Fame conversation immediately upon retirement.
Matthew Stafford is a first-ballot Hall of Famer
I think he's a first battle hall of famer, man. He's a stud... I feel like he's like a Aaron [Rodgers] and [Mahomes] hybrid where like he gets that pop that, that Aaron got. But he also has been changing arm angles and doing No looks back in Detroit 10, 15 years ago.
Bruce Arians on Quarterback Grittiness
Coach Bruce Arians stopped by the studio to talk about his storied career and what he sees in the current crop of young signal-callers. Arians, who has coached everyone from Peyton Manning to Tom Brady, gives a glowing review of Andrew Luck, calling him the most complete prospect he ever encountered.
Andrew Luck is the ultimate quarterback prospect, possessing every top-tier trait
If I was gonna build all of [the QBs I've coached] into one, it'd be Andrew Luck. 'cause he had everything that they all had, you know, he had a photographic memory. He was as athletic stuff was off the charts, same as Cam Newton's. His, his recall was like Ben and Tom. His preparation was like Ben and Tom and Ben, Tom and Peyton.
He also weighed in on the struggles of young QBs like Anthony Richardson. Arians emphasizes that while athleticism is a plus, the NFL eventually requires you to win from the pocket, something Richardson is still trying to prove he can do consistently.
Anthony Richardson is currently more of an athlete than a quarterback because he lacks consistency in the pocket
Anthony's stats didn't match. His ability and, and all, all ability doesn't make a quarterback. Now. You gotta be, you gotta win two minute, third down. I don't give a shit how fast you run. How high you jump... if you can't show me that you can do that in college, that to me, you're not a quarterback, you're an athlete... And he didn't exactly tear people up in college. You know, it was just combine superstar.
Before letting him go, Arians shared the incredible story of coaching an entire season with a torn Achilles because he didn't want to spend eight months in a boot. That is the definition of no risk, no biscuit.
Just remember to set your clocks forward next week, or backward, or whatever it is that makes the football start earlier.
