Julian Edelman In Studio, Championship Preview + Fyre Fest Of The Week

Friday, January 28, 202216 takes

Julian Edelman joins us in studio to talk about hiring and firings (-) and Big Ben’s retirement (-). We preview both Championship games starting with Niners/Rams (-) and then Chiefs/Rams (-). We get Jules to FaceTime Tom Brady as well (-). We finish the show with Nathaniel Hackett to the Broncos and Fyre Fest of the week.

Julian Edelman on Championship Sunday, Brady's Future, and Big Ben's Legacy

Julian Edelman is back in the studio, and he brought the energy of someone who hasn't quite adjusted to being 45 minutes late for a meeting without Bill Belichick fining him. The vibe was electric as the guys prepared for the final weekend with multiple football games, starting with a heavy look at the coaching carousel. Big Cat is already in mid-season form with his Bears pessimism, fully embracing the hire of Matt Eberflus while simultaneously predicting the inevitable demise of the regime.

The Bears' new coaching regime under Matt Eberflus will likely be fired in a few years

This new regime of Matt [Eberflus] and Ryan [Poles] is probably going to be fired, which that is very funny that they just did that again. It's probably going to be fired in a few years anyway.

Matt Eberflus was hired in January 2022 and fired in December 2024, confirming Big Cat's 'few years' prediction.

Julian Edelman didn't exactly offer a vote of confidence for the hire either. He questioned why a team with a young, developing quarterback like Justin Fields wouldn't lean into the offensive-minded trend sweeping the league.

The Bears should have hired an offensive coach to pair with Justin Fields instead of Matt Eberflus

I was looking at that and I was a little conflicted. You have a young quarterback and we've seen with all these other teams when they're surrounding these guys with those quarterback whispers, whatever you want to call it, these offensive minded coaches, we've seen a lot of success... I personally would have went to the opposite direction of [defensive minded].

Justin Fields struggled under Eberflus and was eventually traded to the Steelers, and Eberflus was fired after failing to develop a consistent offense.

Retirement Talk and the Brady FaceTime

With Big Ben officially hanging them up, the conversation turned to the end of an era. PFT pointed out that Ben is actually pulling off the rare feat of leaving at the right time, rather than hanging on until his arm literally falls off in the middle of a screen pass.

Ben Roethlisberger is retiring at the perfect time, walking away a year early rather than a year too late

I just think that it's good that Big Ben is doing this the right way. He's choosing to walk away from the game one year too early instead of one year too late. That's always how you want to see somebody go out.

Roethlisberger officially retired in January 2022 and did not attempt a comeback, successfully walking away.

Naturally, that led to the question everyone wants to know: what about Tom? Julian Edelman gave his take on whether his former quarterback is finally done. While he thinks the pull of family is stronger than ever, he’s not ready to bet against one more run in Tampa.

Tom Brady has one more year of football left in him

I think he's got one more year. Cause it's like looking at the Bucs roster. It's family. Yeah. That's the family's tough. It's going to have to be really good for him... This is the most I've ever felt like he could probably hang them up, but you know what I mean? It wouldn't surprise me either way.

Brady retired on Feb 1, 2022, but un-retired on March 13, 2022, and played exactly one more season for the Buccaneers.

In one of the most stressful moments in PMT history, Julian Edelman actually FaceTimed Tom Brady while the cameras were rolling. While we had to cut the audio because we’re good people who respect two-party consent laws, seeing the guys react to the GOAT popping up on a phone screen was worth the price of admission alone.

Championship Sunday Preview

Looking at the Niners and Rams, Julian Edelman is all-in on the Niners' physicality. He thinks the Rams' defensive line is going to get absolutely worn down by the constant car crashes that Kyle Shanahan designs in the run game. He also has a very specific definition of what it means to be a "dog" in this league.

You aren't a true 'dog' until your back is against the wall and you prove the doubters wrong

You can't go out there and be a dog until your ass is against the wall. People are hating on you and you go out and you prove them wrong. That's when you're a dog.

This is a subjective definition of an intangible personality trait.

The 49ers will beat the Rams in the NFC Championship Game

I'm going Moneyline... San Francisco 49ers. They're going to win. Jimmy G is going to have a good game. I do. Kyle Shanahan is probably preaching to this guy... just take care of the ball.

The Rams defeated the 49ers 20-17 to advance to the Super Bowl.

Over in the AFC, the guys discussed whether the Chiefs are in a let-down spot after the greatest divisional game ever played. Julian Edelman is leaning toward the Bengals being a team of destiny, though he’s worried about teams leaving points on the board by trying to be too smart with the analytics.

NFL teams are over-relying on analytics and should prioritize taking points with field goals to build momentum

I hate that. Refusing to kick a field goal and go for on a fourth down... that caused the [Chargers] their season. There's a time and place. It has to be a win for the guys on the sidelines [to take the points]. You don't get it, and then you're probably going to go for it again.

The value of analytics versus field goal points is a central debate in modern NFL strategy that remains subjective.

The Bengals are a 'team of destiny' and will beat the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game

I'm going with the Bengals. Cause they're I think they're a team of destiny. Joe, Joe Burrow. This is the first number one pick to ever go to the AFC championship or a championship game into his third or second year.

The Bengals defeated the Chiefs 27-24 in overtime to reach the Super Bowl.

The Broncos and Aaron Rodgers Rumors

The Nathaniel Hackett hire in Denver has everyone thinking Aaron Rodgers is a lock for the Mile High City. Big Cat pointed out that while it might make sense for Rodgers' legacy, it’s a brutal move for his winning percentage to jump into a division with Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert.

Aaron Rodgers would be an idiot to leave the NFC North for the AFC West

Aaron Rodgers... he'd be an idiot to [go to the Broncos]. You're basically going into the hardest [division]. Now you're going to the AFC West where you gotta play Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes and Derek Carr. That doesn't seem very smart.

Rodgers stayed in Green Bay for one more year before moving to the AFC East (Jets). The AFC West in 2022 did prove to be a difficult division, though Derek Carr and Russell Wilson underperformed.

If Aaron Rodgers goes to the Broncos and beats Mahomes twice a year, he's the GOAT

If Aaron Rodgers goes to the Broncos... he does get to have these primetime duels with Patrick Mahomes twice a year. It would be like if he starts beating Patrick Mahomes' brains in kind of re-figures his legacy. He has to be regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time.

Rodgers never joined the Broncos, so the condition was never met.

We wrapped up with Fyre Fest of the Week, where Billy admitted to being an "internet trash" eater regarding Neil Young, and PFT mourned the breakup of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

If the Bengals win this weekend, expect a Joe Burrow cigar-smoking interview to follow shortly.

Kyler Murray's bad body language and lack of sideline chemistry suggest he isn't a great leader

Something that I've noticed about Kyler [Murray] in the last, maybe three games of the regular season... in that playoff game, the body language from him, like he never had any of his teammates ever around him on the sideline... He always looked like he was either bored or like very sad to be at the games. And yeah. So I think it does make a difference.

Murray's leadership was a recurring storyline, later punctuated by the 'independent study' clause in his contract.

I will never become a coach because knowing how it's done at the highest level would kill me

If I'm coaching, we've got some problems, guys. I already know how it's done at the highest level, it will kill me. I wouldn't be able to do it.

Edelman has not taken a coaching role since retiring, maintaining this stance.

Aaron Rodgers is officially a loser

I don't even hate him anymore. He's just a loser. [Aaron Rodgers] is just a loser.

This is a purely subjective and provocative opinion intended for comedic effect.

I don't believe the United States will ever be good at soccer

I just don't believe that we will win. It's that simple... I wish we were good at soccer. We're not. And I'm not gonna pretend like soccer matters in this country when it doesn't.

Caleb Williams will transfer to the Wisconsin Badgers

I've fully bought into the fact that Caleb Williams might be a Wisconsin Badger and it's makes no sense. And his choices are between Wisconsin, LSU and USC.

Caleb Williams committed to USC on February 1, 2022.

The Wisconsin Badgers have become the Denver Broncos of college football, only looking for veteran transfer quarterbacks to win a title

You guys [Wisconsin] are like the Denver Broncos of college football with Russell Wilson coming in and competing. Now you get another guy [Caleb Williams] that's coming in just to win a title and leave.

Wisconsin did not land Caleb Williams, and their subsequent transfer quarterback strategy (Tanner Mordecai, Tyler Van Dyke) has yielded mixed results.
