Justin Thomas on the Ryder Cup and CM Punk on His AEW Return

NFL Week 4 is officially here, and the energy in the studio is electric because we finally got the PFT eye reveal on the Thursday night stream. After Trevor Lawrence looked like he finally belonged in the league despite a Jaguars loss, the focus shifted to the Bengals being a legitimate threat. Big Cat is officially putting Joe Burrow and Cincinnati on notice.

The Bengals are officially on 'frisky watch'

The Bengals, I think are officially on frisky watch. Who is more frisky? The Bengals or the Panthers. I think the Panthers... The Bengals just joined the Panthers in the frisky watch.

The Bengals were much more than frisky; they won the AFC North and represented the AFC in the Super Bowl.

While the Bengals are trending up, the situation in Jacksonville looks bleak. Urban Meyer seems to be wearing the weight of the world on his shoulders, and Big Cat isn't convinced the college legend actually wants to be in the professional ranks.

Urban Meyer looks miserable and doesn't like coaching in the NFL

Urban Meyer, what are you doing? Urban Meyer doesn't like coaching football. It was pretty apparent like in the first half... He just looks like he's miserable out there all the time. I don't know why he does it to himself.

Urban Meyer's tenure was a disaster and he was fired on December 16, 2021, following poor results and off-field scandals.

The Brady-Belichick Bowl and Week 4 Picks

The guys turned their attention to the biggest regular-season game in years: Tom Brady returning to Foxborough. Hank is already emotional about the "coming home" videos, but the actual football handicap feels one-sided. Big Cat and PFT are both looking at the Buccaneers to handle business, even if it feels personal for Brady.

The Buccaneers are going to kill the Patriots on Sunday Night Football

I think I do agree with you that the [Buccaneers] are probably gonna kill the Patriots. Do you think they're going to? The [Buccaneers] are sick. Yeah.

The Bucs won 19-17 in a much closer game than 'killing' them implies, but they did get the victory.

Beyond the Sunday Night drama, PFT is keeping a close eye on Kirk Cousins. While the Vikings QB has been playing like an MVP candidate through three weeks, PFT has a very specific date circled for when the clock strikes midnight on Captain Kirk.

Kirk Cousins will turn back into a 'pumpkin' on Halloween against the Cowboys

I've actually identified exactly when [Kirk Cousins] is going to turn back into old Kirk Cousins... Halloween. I think he's going to have the entire month of October this year, and then on Halloween he's playing in against the Cowboys and he's got some tougher defenses that he's going to be going up against.

On Halloween 2021, the Vikings lost to the Cowboys 20-16. Cousins had a mediocre game with 184 yards and 1 TD, but it wasn't a total 'pumpkin' collapse, though they lost at home to Cooper Rush.

For the gambling crowd, Big Cat is leaning heavily into his favorite trend: Mike Tomlin as a significant underdog. With the Steelers heading to Lambeau, the analytics might hate Pittsburgh, but the history of Tomlin catching points is hard to ignore.

Mike Tomlin is a lock to cover or win as a 6+ point underdog

I'm taking the Steelers plus seven. I realized Mike Tomlin as an underdog... Mike Tomlin is a six plus point underdog is nine, three, and one against the spread. I think they win this game outright.

The Steelers lost 27-17 to the Packers, failing to cover the +6.5 or +7 spread.

Justin Thomas on Ryder Cup Glory

Fresh off a historic beatdown of the Europeans at Whistling Straits, Justin Thomas joined the show to discuss the team dynamic and the partying that followed. JT didn't hold back on the greatness of this specific American squad, claiming their place in history after the 19-9 victory.

The 2021 US Ryder Cup team is the best of all time

I mean, it's hard to argue that we weren't. It's I mean, we put up the most points in history. I mean, selfishly I'm I might be just slightly biased, but until someone puts up 20 or 19 and a half points or 20 points, I think we have that right at this moment.

The 19-9 victory was the largest margin of victory in Ryder Cup history since the 28-point format was adopted in 1979.

While the Ryder Cup was a high, JT also reflected on some of his more "soft" moments on the tour, specifically the time he had a fan ejected for a mild chirp. He also looked ahead to the new PGA season with a massive guarantee that would put him in rare air if he pulls it off.

I guarantee I will win six tournaments on the PGA Tour this season

I'm going to go with six [wins]. [That's a considerable amount of wins]. I'm trying.

Justin Thomas won exactly one tournament in the 2021-22 season (the PGA Championship).

CM Punk is All Elite

In a massive in-studio appearance, CM Punk sat down to discuss his return to professional wrestling with AEW. He described the moment at the United Center as the undisputed peak of his career, eclipsing everything he did during his previous run.

My AEW return at the United Center is the number one moment of my career

Number one easily, number one far and away. What that represented, what the moment was far and away. Number one moment in my career, easily, easily. It's like number one. And then there's a gap. And then there's number two.

This is a subjective personal ranking, but given the cultural impact and emotions he's expressed, he remains firm on this.

Punk was incredibly candid about the cultural differences between his past and present. He described a former workplace environment built on internal friction and explained why AEW’s focus on the product itself is the key to winning the wrestling war.

AEW wins if they just focus on putting out a better product than WWE

The only thing we have to do is put out a better product and we win in my opinion. You know, we don't have a show that goes head to head on Mondays. We're not trying to quote unquote, put them out of business. My take on that is if we just focus on ourselves and we tighten up all our screws and we make our show better then we win.

This is an ongoing business philosophy that can't be definitively proven right or wrong, but tracks with AEW's early growth years.

He even touched on the infamous "plane rides from hell," suggesting that the stories already public are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the chaos of the old-school wrestling travel lifestyle.

WWE fosters a culture where wrestlers are encouraged to step on each other's necks

Vince always fostered this, this a culture where he wanted everybody at their throat. He wanted people stepping on your neck to get to where you are and ahead of you and all that other stuff. And now I think there's wrestlers on both sides who were like, whatever, let's all go get pancakes.

This matches numerous reports from former WWE employees about the 'competitive' or 'toxic' environment during that era.

The show wrapped up with a somber Fyre Fest from Big Cat regarding his legendary dog Stella, followed by the usual chaos of the numbers rack.

Go hug your dog and get your bets in before the 1 PM kickoffs.

Trevor Lawrence has officially arrived in the NFL. He played very well. This was officially his first game.

Lawrence played his best game to date at that point, though the Jaguars still lost and his rookie season remained difficult.

The moment might be too big for McCorkell Jones in Brady's Foxborough return

The moment might actually be too big for McCorkell Jones because he's obviously a rookie quarterback and he feels like he's got a lot of responsibility taking over this franchise... getting to see it up close and personal when you're going to have every fan at the stadium that's rooting for you also give a standing ovation to the guy that was there before you.

Subjective, though Mac Jones was widely praised for his poise in this specific game despite the loss.

The Browns will beat the Vikings because Kevin Stefanski knows all of Minnesota's secrets

I'm going with the Browns minus two. I'm just going simply Kevin Stefanski was a coach for the Vikings for 14 years. He knows everything about them and Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney sack—visualize Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney running free off the edge for Kirk Cousins.

The Browns beat the Vikings 14-7, covering the -2 spread.

Dak Prescott is a great value bet at 13-1 to win the MVP

Dak Prescott, 13 to one to win the MVP because you got to look at the narrative comeback. Everyone wants, you know, America, especially the, the writers want the Cowboys to be good so they can talk about it.

Aaron Rodgers won the 2021 MVP. Dak finished tied for 9th in voting.

The Washington Football Team's season is over if they lose to the Falcons

If the football team loses [to the Falcons], season done. Done. Because they have the hardest scheduling. And we just have, we have to get to December within like four games of 500.

Washington beat the Falcons, so the condition for the season being 'done' wasn't met. However, they finished 7-10 and missed the playoffs anyway.

Panthers vs Cowboys Under 51.5 is my lock of the year

My under, this is almost a lock for me actually. In my Billy metrics. This is my first, my lock of the year so far. Panthers Cowboys under 51 and a half... every single game that the Panthers have played in this year, the total has been exactly 33.

The final score was 36-28 Cowboys, totaling 64 points. The under lost by 12.5 points.

The Chiefs will 'clown' the Eagles and make them look like a clown show

My favorite is the Chiefs minus seven against the Eagles. They're going to absolutely clown [them]. No, literally they're going to make the Eagles look like clowns. Mahomes is going to run around like throw some fucking deep bomb.

The Chiefs beat the Eagles 42-30. While Mahomes threw 5 TDs, the game was relatively high scoring and not a total defensive shutdown, but a clear Chiefs win.

The Ben Simmons holdout is unique because for once, the team is good and the player is the problem

This is uncharted territory because whenever you have a holdout or a guy demanding a trade it's because he's really, really good. And his team sucks and he's like the franchise won't support me. It's the exact opposite. The team is good. And Ben Simmons sucks. So it's like you have all the support. You are just the problem.

This is a subjective assessment of the Simmons/76ers dynamic.

Max Homa's Fortinet Championship win should have an asterisk

I'm glad you brought it up. Cause I was going to bring it up, but yeah, I think it's got to be right? [Not a real tournament]. Yeah man, I boy, I hate to do that to Max. I mean, you could also argue that it really wasn't even Max because with that mustache, it doesn't even look like him.

I regret ejecting a fan for a 'get in the bunker' cheer; it was a soft move

It was definitely one of the moments I'm not proud of... of all things like that's the guy I chose to throw out. I clearly would not have had that over, but I wish I could have like made it an interaction... It was very soft. A hundred percent.

Alabama will beat Ole Miss but won't cover the spread in a shootout

I think it's going to be a shootout. I think Lane Kiffin is one of a kind and I think he knows Coach's [Saban] ways pretty well... I don't think the Tide's going to cover, but I think they win.

Alabama won 42-21, covering the 14.5 point spread. JT was wrong about the cover.

The Blackhawks will be back in the playoffs this year

I think [the Blackhawks] will be good. Seth Jones getting Marc-Andre Fleury for absolutely nothing... I think they'll be back in the playoffs this year. Let's say that.

The Blackhawks finished the 2021-22 season with 67 points, 7th in the Central Division, and missed the playoffs by a wide margin.
