Dan Dakich on March Madness, Indiana’s Search, and Big Ten Superiority
The first four days of the NCAA Tournament are in the books, and the hierarchy of college basketball conferences has been completely reshuffled according to the only metrics that matter: Big Cat’s vibes. While the rest of the country was mourning their busted brackets, Big Cat was busy taking a victory lap because his beloved Big Ten actually showed up to play while the heavy hitters out East looked like they were playing in slow motion.
The ACC Is Officially Soft
It didn’t take long for the guys to establish the narrative for the rest of the month. Duke is out, Villanova choked, and the conference everyone spent all season glazing has turned into a total disaster. Big Cat and PFT wasted no time dancing on the graves of the ACC blue bloods, especially after South Carolina turned Duke into a highlight reel of missed rotations.
The Big Ten is back
The Big Ten is back.
Beyond the conference wars, the actual quality of the games was the main focus. While some casuals complained about a lack of first-round upsets, Big Cat pointed out that the lack of Cinderellas actually saved the tournament from a boring second round.
Upsets in the first round usually mean bad games in the second round
Upsets in the first round usually mean bad games in the second round. We didn't have a lot of upsets in the first round. We had some pretty good games in the second round.
Speaking of Duke, the Coach K era might be closer to the end than anyone realizes. After watching the Blue Devils give up 65 points in a single half, the rumor mill is spinning. Big Cat isn't just looking at the scoreboard; he's looking at the exit door for the legend in Durham.
Coach K will retire this offseason
Coach K's 70. Coach K's going to retire. Oh, this offseason. That's the new rumor. This is the year.
Dan Dakich Joins the Show
Friend of the program Dan Dakich hopped on to break down the madness and provide an insider's look at the mess in Bloomington. Between being roasted by listeners for his hair and his history of shutting down Michael Jordan, Dakich provided some actual basketball insight on why certain teams are still alive. He’s fully bought into the Michigan “Team of Destiny” narrative, mostly because his son is on the roster, but also because they survived a literal plane crash.
Michigan will win the national championship
I got them [Michigan] winning national championship. I don't know if McAfee kept it... But I got them winning national championship because of all that stuff.
Dakich also went deep on the Indiana job now that Tom Crean has been sent packing. While Indiana fans spent years complaining about Crean’s “fireable face” and his habit of kissing his son on the lips, Dakich thinks the school might be swinging for the fences with their next hire.
Indiana will fly a plane full of money to Boston to sit down with Brad Stevens
I've always said you just fill a plane full of money and you just fly it to Boston and, you know, Brad, here you go, man. Let's figure this out together... I think, yeah, I do. I think they're going to talk to him.
Teams of Destiny and the Big Ben Update
With the Sweet 16 set, the guys had to power rank who actually has the juice to win it all. PFT is keeping a close eye on West Virginia and Bob Huggins, mostly because he’s worried about Huggy Bear’s health in the Arizona heat. Meanwhile, Big Cat has a theory about how Gonzaga has managed to stay alive despite their history of early exits.
Gonzaga is a team of destiny because they absorbed Northwestern's power
I do believe in teams of destiny absorbing the teams they beat and their destiny... So they took out Northwestern, which was a true team of destiny, and they absorbed all that destiny. They're double the destiny.
"Frank Martin looks like the PE instructor from Beavis and Butthead."
Before letting the listeners get back to their Monday, the guys checked in on their favorite off-season tradition: the Big Ben retirement watch. It turns out Ben Roethlisberger has decided that he does, in fact, still like playing football, much to the surprise of absolutely no one who has followed his career for more than five minutes.
We'll see everyone on Wednesday for a massive interview with World Series champion Anthony Rizzo.
