Shawn Marion on Suns' '7 Seconds or Less' and Final Four Chaos
The pod is coming to you from the future and the past simultaneously as PFT travels back from Hong Kong while Big Cat and Hank hold things down in Minneapolis. The weekend was dominated by a Final Four that featured the first-ever stadium booze sales, some questionable officiating, and an Auburn loss that will haunt the Plains for a generation.
Big Cat was in the building for the Virginia-Auburn finish and didn't hold back on the brutal nature of the Tigers' exit. While Auburn fans were melting down over a missed double-dribble call, Big Cat pointed out that letting Kyle Guy step to the line for three free throws is a nightmare scenario.
Auburn's loss to Virginia is the worst possible way to lose a Final Four game
Auburn, I would say that might be the worst possible way to lose a Final Four game of all time... hitting three free throws in that situation, that's the shit you do in your backyard, and you miss two out of three, and you're like, all right, redo. He was money on all three. And Auburn, I would say that might be the worst possible way to lose a Final Four game of all time.
PFT already has his eyes on the awards ceremony, specifically the one involving Jim Nance and a very specific piece of neckwear.
Kyle Guy is making a strong case for the Jim Nance Tie Player of the Year
He is making a hard case for the Jim Nance tie player of the year. I think if it's not Kyle Guy, I think even if UVA loses the national championship, Jim Nance is going to find a way to get him that tie.
While the internet was busy dissecting every frame of Ty Jerome’s handle, Big Cat isn't interested in the 'what ifs' that come with refereeing blunders. He's ready to move on, even if Bruce Pearl isn't.
You can't play the 'sliding doors' game with officiating mistakes in a loss
Auburn has a terrible loss but at the end of the day it's like that's kind of how it goes. Like you can't play sliding doors, you can't be like, well this call should have gone another way and it would have changed everything.
The Matrix in Studio
NBA Champion and 4-time All-Star Shawn Marion joined the show to discuss his legendary career. He didn't hold back on the Suns' 'Seven Seconds or Less' era, his relationship with Dirk Nowitzki, and the constant criticism of his unique shooting form. When the guys asked if any coach ever tried to fix his shot, Trix shut that down immediately.
I was the best shooter in the NBA and my form didn't need fixing because I bust everybody's ass
I would beat the shit out of everybody. You know what I'm saying? I mean, I would bust everybody ass... [Coaches] couldn't shoot either. What the fuck are you going to tell me what to do?
Marion also provided some perspective on the Suns' mid-2000s run, specifically pushing back on the narrative that they didn't care about the defensive end of the floor. He argued that their offensive pace simply made their defensive numbers look worse than the actual effort.
The 'Seven Seconds or Less' Suns actually played good defense but were overshadowed by their scoring
We did play defense. That's the sad [part]. It got overshadowed because we were scoring so much... I think especially some guys play horrible individual defenders but great team defenders.
Reflecting on his championship with the Mavericks, Marion gave flowers to Dirk for his effort on the defensive end during that 2011 run. He also touched on playing with LeBron James in Cleveland, offering a candid critique of the King’s on-court leadership style.
LeBron James shows his teammates up too much on the court
I think he shows his teammates up a little bit too much on the court. You know, and, you know, that's just part of him. I mean, you know, he kind of feel like he earned that. And I mean, that's him... but that's one of the things I don't like he does.
Who’s Back and Monday Reading
Who's Back featured a heated debate over Paul Pierce’s legacy after he claimed he had a better career than Dwyane Wade. Big Cat thinks The Truth is playing a dangerous game with his own reputation by inviting the comparisons.
Paul Pierce is making himself look overrated by actively claiming he's better than Dwyane Wade
Paul Pierce made the ultimate error where Paul Pierce is the perfect guy that if he just kind of stays under the radar, everyone will say, hey, you know who's better than people give him credit for? Paul Pierce. But when he says he's like actively says he's better than someone, people will roast him... now you've done the reverse. And everyone's like, Paul Pierce was overrated.
Hank’s 'Who’s Back' was Country Trap, as Lil Nas X continues his absolute dominance of the charts with "Old Town Road."
Country Trap is back and here to stay
Country Trap is back and it's going to stay around for a while... All I'm saying is we talked about it on the show and now [Lil Nas X] is number one and number three on the charts.
The show wrapped with a legendary Monday Reading: Hank's original cover letter to Barstool Sports. It’s a masterpiece of phonetic spelling and over-promising, featuring the word "guarantee" spelled G-A-R-U-N-T-E-E in all caps. It’s a reminder that if you’re willing to work for free and claim you own a 16-foot camera crane, you too can eventually become a super producer.
Good luck to Texas Tech tonight, mostly because Big Cat’s brain is firing on all cylinders thanks to a strawberry banana Body Armor.
