Remembering Kobe Bryant plus George Kittle Live from Miami

The sports world came to a standstill with the horrific news of Kobe Bryant’s passing. We’re in Miami for Super Bowl week, but it’s impossible to start the show any other way than by paying tribute to a legend who felt invincible. Big Cat and PFT Commenter spent time reflecting on the Mamba Mentality and how Kobe was the singular bridge between eras of greatness.

Kobe Bryant was the bridge that took the baton from Michael Jordan and passed it to LeBron James

Kobe Bryant was the type of guy who [was] bigger than his sport, who was the guy who took the baton from Michael Jordan and passed it to LeBron James, who was basically the guy in the NBA for a decade plus.

This is a subjective assessment of a player's historical role in the league, generally supported by most basketball historians.

PFT Commenter noted that the suddenness of the tragedy felt unlike anything since the loss of a NASCAR icon, leading to a somber atmosphere where the results on the court felt entirely secondary.

Kobe Bryant's death is the most shocking athlete death since Dale Earnhardt

I can't think of another case where an athlete of like this stature has passed away suddenly, like maybe the closest thing I can even think of is Dale Earnhardt.

The level of 'shock' is a subjective experience, though widely shared by the sports community at the time.

As the league tried to navigate the grief, many players were visibly shaken during warmups and games. PFT Commenter felt the weight of the moment was too much for the schedule to continue as planned.

The NBA should have canceled all games on the day Kobe Bryant died

I think [the NBA] should have canceled the games today because of what he meant everybody in the league. It seemed like Kobe had some sort of influence on every single team... it felt like one of those things where the the whole league was like sleepwalking.

The NBA did not cancel games that night, though they later postponed a Lakers/Clippers game. This remains a subjective opinion on how the league should handle tragedies.

Super Bowl LIV and The People's Tight End

Shifting gears to Miami, the guys were joined in person by George Kittle. While he’s technically George, we all know he’s a Greg at heart. Kittle is prepping for the biggest game of his life against the Chiefs, and he’s bringing some intense pre-game rituals with him. He revealed that his father sends him a multi-page letter before every game, but the physical preparation involves a bit more than just reading.

I throw up before every single football game

As soon as we come back in from warm-ups. I go puke... hundred percent for every game... I always think I'm like, I'm a step faster now. That's my positive mindset.

Kittle has confirmed this in multiple interviews throughout his career as his standard routine.

Kittle is the engine of the 49ers' identity, and while most stars want the targets, he’s perfectly happy doing the dirty work in the trenches. He lives for the moments where he can physically dominate a defender to spring a teammate loose.

I actually prefer blocking to catching the ball

I like blocking a lot like my favorite thing... when it's play call is like, all right, you're just going to go just throw some people out of the club. You're like fuck. Yes. Let's go.

This is a statement of personal preference from an elite athlete about his craft.

If you don't embrace the physicality of football, you are playing the game wrong

If you don't embrace the physicality of football, you're playing the game wrong. I always say that as a kicker... I say that all the time.

This is a philosophical stance on how the game should be played.

Before letting him go to Media Day, the guys had to ask about the guy under center. Kittle is fully confident in Jimmy G, mostly because of the sheer power of his facial structure.

Jimmy Garoppolo's chin line will lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl win

Jimmy [Garoppolo] I think is one of the strongest chin lines in the NFL and with that, you know that chin line it's going to, you know, definitely let us know Super Bowl this year.

The 49ers lost Super Bowl LIV to the Kansas City Chiefs 31-20.

Who's Back and XFL Dreams

In a quick Who’s Back, PFT Commenter gave an update on his XFL journey. After a legendary tryout that didn't quite land him on a Week 1 roster, there’s still a glimmer of hope on the practice squad. However, he’s not just going to be a body for the sake of it.

I'm only joining an XFL team if I have a real chance to make the roster

The practice squad offer is apparently legit. Like I'm going to get a contract if I want to go down that road... in which case I'm only going down that road if they give me an opportunity to work my way onto a team. I'm not just going to be on practice squad a year.

PFT never actually signed a contract or played for an XFL team, as the 2020 season was cut short by COVID-19 and the bit eventually faded.

On the golf side of things, Bryson DeChambeau is back for being put on the clock for slow play. PFT Commenter thinks the "Mad Scientist" needs to put away the protractor and just hit the damn ball.

Bryson DeChambeau worries too much about angles and should just play golf

He does like the compass and the he does like all the math behind his shots. Just go out and shoot the ball, dude, maybe if you stop thinking about it, you'd be like Brooks [Koepka] and wind shit... You worry too much about angles buddy.

Bryson DeChambeau went on to win the U.S. Open later that year (2020) using his analytical methods, proving they could win championships, though the debate over his pace of play continued.

Clips From The Corp: Kobe Bryant

To close the show, Big Cat shared some of the most memorable moments from his 2018 interview with Kobe Bryant. The intensity Kobe brought to the court translated directly to his business ventures at Granity Studios. He wasn't looking to just be a former athlete with a hobby; he was looking to dominate his second act just as much as his first.

I expect excellent work in my office; if the work is average, you don't belong here

I expect excellent work. We all do. So I don't care if you're in the office at 6:00 a.m. and you leave at midnight, if the work that you do is average, then this is not the home for you. Conversely, you cannot be in an office at all and have excellent work, this is the place for you.

This is Kobe's personal management philosophy and standard for his business.

If my accomplishments in the next 20 years don't exceed my NBA career, then I failed

I told somebody said listen if what I do in the next 20 years is not better than my last 20 then I failed... I wouldn't accomplish what I accomplished my last 20 years if I did not have this mentality to begin with.

Due to his untimely death, Kobe was unable to complete the 20-year window to fulfill this personal ambition. In the short time he had, he won an Oscar and built a successful media company, but the take is ultimately unresolvable.

Kobe also didn't have much patience for the "system" talk that often dominates sports debates. To him, greatness was about solving the specific puzzle you were given, regardless of the circumstances or the teammates.

Claiming a bad system or bad teammates ruined your career is just an excuse

That sounds like excuses to me. I mean, you got to figure it out, right? If you really have an obsession to figure it out. You will figure it out, right and every puzzles constructed differently... You just got to figure out Your own puzzles.

This is a foundational philosophy of Kobe's career and cannot be objectively proven true or false, though it is a highly debated topic in sports analytics regarding player environment.

He even touched on the legendary friction with Shaq, confirming what many suspected about their differing approaches to the offseason.

Shaq admitted he used to coast through the summer because he knew I was training

When we sat down we did the interview together. He finally He copped to the fact that after we won championships, she's like I can just relax and Coastal with the summer because I know I got a teammate who's going to be training 8 10 hours a day and I was like see that's the BSS yet that would piss and shit.

Shaquille O'Neal has admitted in various interviews (including the one with Kobe) that he did not maintain the same year-round training intensity as Kobe, often using the regular season to play himself into shape.

Rest in peace to a legend who truly gave everything to the game and everything to his family.

Hug your loved ones a little tighter today.

The NFL should implement the XFL's 4th-and-15 onside kick alternative rule

They tried out the Mike Florio rule where you get a one passing down fourth and 15 and you try to make a first down instead of an onside kick... it's a great rule by the way. They should absolutely implement it.

The NFL has not yet adopted this rule as of 2024, although it has been proposed and tested in the Pro Bowl.

Antarctica is always freezing, and it is weird to suggest they have a 'summer' where it isn't cold

I was always taught that Antarctica was just always freezing. No one lives there. It's a continent that no one lives on because it's all ice... I assume that it was always cold... there's no houses there, people don't go vacationing there.

While Antarctica is always cold, it does have a 'summer' season (Dec-Feb) where temperatures are significantly warmer than winter, though still below freezing in most parts.

The 2002 Western Conference Finals were rigged

[The 2002 Western Conference Finals] was rigged. Mr. Official's name Tim Donaghy. We definitely have money on it. Yeah, so that's a fact. Yes. Yes. So from that standpoint, yes, but from the Kings missing 20-something free throws in Game 7... we all know what else to tell you.

While the 2002 WCF (specifically Game 6) is widely criticized and Donaghy later claimed it was fixed, Donaghy did not officiate that series, and no official rigging has ever been legally proven.
