Troy Aikman on the NFL, Robert Saleh Fired, and the Drake Maye Era Begins
The vibes are immaculate for everyone except Jets fans and Max this week. Big Cat and PFT Commenter opened the show with the absolute bombshell that Robert Saleh has been relieved of his duties in New York. While the firing was shocking in its timing, the guys pointed out that the writing was on the wall after that awkward sideline interaction with Aaron Rodgers during the Patriots game. PFT didn't mince words about Rodgers' role in the turnover of coaching staffs throughout his career.
Aaron Rodgers is a serial coach killer
[Aaron Rodgers] is a serial coach killer. Mike McCarthy and [Robert Saleh]. If you kill two people, you're a serial killer.
With Saleh out, the Jets turn to Jeff Ulbrich as the interim head coach. Memes is predictably depressed about the whole situation, but PFT sees a path to success for the new guy in charge based on his background.
The Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich will succeed because he is a wrestler
Jeff Ulbrich, he's got to work out because when it comes to interim head coaches, you either need a fat guy, or you need like an ex-player hardass... He looks like the ex-player hardass linebacker... Being a wrestler, I feel like is a big, big plus in the interim head coach power rankings.
The Chiefs Are Inevitable
Monday Night Football wasn't particularly close as the Chiefs handled the Saints with ease. It’s becoming terrifyingly clear that the Chiefs have entered their dynasty Patriots phase where they can just plug in guys like Juju Smith-Schuster and Kareem Hunt and look like the best team in the world. Big Cat is already calling the season for Kansas City.
The Chiefs will win the Super Bowl again
What the Chiefs are doing is very dynasty Patriots-esque... They're just really, really good and they're going to win the Super Bowl again and we just all have to come to grips with that.
Drake Maye Day in New England
In huge news for the lighthouse, Drake Maye has officially been named the starter for the Patriots. Hank is predictably terrified that Maye is going to get killed behind that offensive line, but Big Cat and PFT are just happy to have a reason to watch the Patriots on Sundays again. Big Cat thinks there might be a more cynical marketing reason behind the timing of the announcement.
The Patriots are starting Drake Maye specifically to sell throwback jerseys
Do you think this is because they're wearing the throwbacks and if they win, they're going to sell a shit ton of Drake Maye [jerseys]? Patriots throwbacks... You're absolutely right. Because why wouldn't you do it against the Jaguars?
Max is Down Bad
Max joined from New York where he’s currently suffering through the Phillies-Mets series. Between Nick Castellanos quotes about death making people feel alive and the Mets looking like a team of destiny, Max is at his breaking point. He’s already pronouncing the season over for the Fightins.
The Phillies are dead and they are a soft baseball team
The Phillies are dead... The Phillies are a soft baseball team. The Mets are a hard baseball team. They're a tough baseball team. They come back from things. And the Phillies just don't, they just die.
While discussing the Dodgers-Padres series, PFT offered a galaxy-brain theory on why the Padres' big bats might actually be hurting themselves by hitting the ball too well.
Grand slams are rally killers because they clear the bases
Grand slams are rally killers. You shouldn't hit 'em because then you get everybody off the bases then it's hard to keep scoring runs.
Over in the AL, the Yankees are dealing with their annual October tradition of Aaron Judge struggling to find his swing. PFT is starting to question if Judge truly belongs in the pantheon of pinstripe legends.
Aaron Judge is not a true Yankee because true Yankees get it done in October
I don't think he's a true Yankee, Big Cat... because true Yankees, they get it done in October. Look at the calendar. What does it say? It's October. [His average is .208]... It's Mr. June.
College Football Chaos and Troy Aikman
Week 6 was one of the most insane Saturdays in recent memory, headlined by Vandy taking down Bama. PFT compared the current landscape to the greatest season in the history of the sport.
The 2024 college football season is on pace to be as chaotic as the legendary 2007 season
The chaos and the fact that we don't know who's good in college football right now... It reminds me of that 2007 season... We're on pace for that right now. It's probably not going to last to the same extent that 2007 did, but the upsets are incredible.
Big Cat thinks the new era of the transfer portal and NIL is actually making the sport more competitive by allowing teams like Vanderbilt to reload their rosters instantly.
College football is in a great spot because NIL and the transfer portal have increased parity
I truly believe with the NIL and transfer portal, I think you're going to get these teams, the Vandys of the world, being able to take a little slight step up and be competitive in these type of games that you didn't have before... It feels like there is a maybe 10 teams right now that... could win the playoff.
One guy who doesn't need to prove anything else this year is Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty. PFT is so impressed that he thinks the Heisman frontrunner should just pack it in now to protect his draft stock.
Ashton Jeanty should sit out the rest of the season to protect his NFL draft stock
With the state of the running back position in the NFL where you have to maximize your healthy years... Is it crazy to think maybe Jeanty should just sit down for the rest of the season? I would agree. He's already got a season's worth of stats.
Three-time Super Bowl champ Troy Aikman joined the show to talk about his career, his relationship with Joe Buck, and the current state of the league. Troy got surprisingly honest about how much of a quarterback's success is tied to the people around him rather than just individual talent.
Coaches and organizations fail quarterbacks more than the players fail them
I really believe that so many of these quarterbacks are really talented. They just get put in bad situations... I think that organizations and offensive coaches and offensive coordinators have failed quarterbacks more than quarterbacks have failed organizations.
When asked which NFL franchise he’d invest in right now for the long term, Troy stayed within the NFC East but went with a surprising pick based on a massive crush on a rookie quarterback.
Buy stock in the Washington Commanders for the next 3-5 years
If the NFL was a stock market... [I'm buying] Washington. I wouldn't have said that prior to this year... I can't tell you how high I am on this quarterback [Jayden Daniels]. It's been a long time since I've been that high on a young quarterback.
The episode wrapped up with Joe Buck making a surprise cameo to defend his Indiana Hoosiers fandom, proving that even Hall of Fame broadcasters can't escape the PMT vortex.
At least now we know that if things go south for Troy, he can always fall back on his career as a tri-county typing champion.
