Vince Young on Jeff Fisher, National Titles, and Selection Sunday Chaos

Big Cat and PFT Commenter are coming to you from Austin for South by Southwest, and they are absolutely red and nude about the state of the NCAA tournament selection show. What used to be a sacred hour of television for sports fans was transformed into an alphabetical list that drained every ounce of drama out of the room. Big Cat didn't hold back on the production choices.

CBS ruined Selection Sunday by using alphabetical order for the bracket reveal

The Selection Sunday show was fucking terrible. They had alphabetical order, which was so stupid. We basically sat there like, what's going on? And then three or four times said, wait, is that team in or out? Because you just keep missing teams and there's no bracket. Then they make you wait for the bracket. Then there's technical difficulties. Fuck everything. They ruined one of the best things in sports.

The reaction was overwhelmingly negative across the sports world, and the format was eventually abandoned.

The guys shifted into bracket mode, immediately identifying the teams that were done dirty by the committee. While the usual metrics like road wins and Q1 victories were cited for the snubs, Big Cat thinks there was a much more cynical reason why teams like Louisville and USC were left out in the cold.

The NCAA selection committee snubbed Louisville and USC to avoid talking about the FBI investigation

Stay woke. Louisville and USC, both two teams under the FBI watch. They got out. So, interesting. I actually think there is an element where the selection committee said, well, let's maybe keep these two teams out because we don't want everyone talking about the FBI during March Madness.

Both teams were high-profile snubs with involvement in the scandal, making this a plausible though unprovable theory.

Beyond the FBI conspiracy, the conversation turned to who can actually make a deep run. Big Cat argued that the committee ignored the "eye test" and potential when it came to Mike Brey’s squad.

Notre Dame was robbed of a tournament spot because they have the potential to make a run

Notre Dame should have been in. I know the selection committee says, well, road wins matter, and conference, how are you doing your conference, and the Q1 wins. The other pieces to it should be, can this team make a run? And Notre Dame was one of those teams.

Notre Dame did miss the tournament in 2018; whether they 'should' have been in is subjective.

PFT Commenter, meanwhile, is already looking for the most chaotic outcome possible to spite the NCAA. If they want to investigate everyone, let's see them hand a trophy to the team right in the middle of it.

Arizona winning the national championship would be the ultimate 'fuck you' to the NCAA

You know what would be the absolute best, as the biggest fuck you to the NCAA, is if Arizona won the whole thing. That's what I'm rooting for. I'm standing on the table. I'm a table stander for Sean Miller.

Arizona lost in the first round of the 2018 tournament to Buffalo.

Vince Young Tells All

The legendary Vince Young joined the show to talk about his life in Austin, his legendary performance in the Rose Bowl, and why things didn't always click in the NFL. Despite the Heisman being officially vacated for 2005, Vince made it clear that he knows who the real winner was on that stage in New York.

Reggie Bush is still the 2005 Heisman winner despite the vacated trophy

Reggie Bush was the Heisman that year. That's my guy. But he's still the Heisman in my book.

In 2024, the Heisman Trust actually reinstated Reggie Bush's trophy, making this take retrospectively aligned with the official record.

Vince opened up about his relationship with Jeff Fisher, which was famously strained during his time in Tennessee. He detailed a specific instance where he felt the coach hung him out to dry regarding a missed meeting that was actually for a good cause.

Jeff Fisher lied to the media about why he pulled me from the 2010 Steelers game

He pulls me... and he talking about the reason why he pulled me because I miss a meeting. Like coach, you knew why I missed the meeting. It was Steve McNair kids. Pop just passed away. He knew that I took the kids to school that morning to have breakfast with the kids, told him that. And he's told the media something different, like no Vince miss meeting. Like, how can you go out and say that to the media when you knew what i was doing and you granted me to do it?

This is Young's first-hand account of the event. While Fisher's side may differ, Young is stating this as an absolute fact of his experience.

It wasn't just about the past, though. Vince still has the itch for competition and believes his specific mental approach to the game would play perfectly in today’s RPO-heavy NFL. He broke down the "VY Game Plan" that helped him stack up wins despite the internal friction in Tennessee.

I would have been successful in the modern NFL because of my game planning strategy

I think I have success, period. Just that's more confidence in myself and my teammates. ... I have some tactics, some strategies. ... First half maintain, and then the second half, go the fuck off. That's what I mean. ... I kind of played dumb the first half. Like I didn't see that blitz or I didn't see that throw. And then when Coach called it again and when it started to happen, when it matters [I'd go off].

Hypothetical claim about a retired player's fit in a different era; inherently subjective.

He also took a stand on the current state of college athletics, arguing that the amount of money being generated should finally find its way into the pockets of the players taking the hits.

College athletes should get paid because they put their bodies on the line to raise money for universities

Yes, they should get paid. I mean, they're putting their body on the line. They're doing all of the above and raising money and putting money in your pocket. I mean, you should do something, especially for the guys that get hurt.

The NCAA eventually allowed for NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) compensation starting in 2021.

Who’s Back & What Offseason

Tiger Woods is back (basically), humanity is back because a burger-flipping robot got fired, and Big Cat is entering March Madness with a level of confidence that can only be described as dangerous.

I am officially winning all my bets this year

This is the year I'm going to win all my bets. So it happens every year right before March Madness. I tell myself, give myself a little pep talk, but I think this is going to be the year.

He did not, in fact, win all of his bets.

The show also debuted a new segment called "What Offseason?" to handle the absolute deluge of NFL news. The Browns are trying to build a contender through sheer volume of trades, though PFT Commenter remains skeptical about whether a talented roster can overcome the "Browns-ness" of it all.

Jarvis Landry and Josh Gordon are the best wide receiver duo in the NFL

I saw somebody on Twitter say Jarvis Landry and Josh Gordon are probably the best wide receiver duo in the NFL, and I would agree with that if it wasn't the Browns. There's just something about the uniform that will make both of them – their powers combined is the opposite of synergy. It makes them suck more.

Josh Gordon only played one game for the Browns in 2018 before being traded to the Patriots. Landry was productive, but the duo never realized their potential together.

PFT also dropped a massive retirement bomb regarding a coaching legend in East Lansing that might change how people look at the Spartans' tournament run.

This is Tom Izzo's final year coaching at Michigan State

One of my who's backs is, this is Coach Izzo's swan song. I'm just going to say it. This is his final year.

Tom Izzo did not retire and is still the head coach of Michigan State as of 2024.

Before heading to their panel, the guys made sure to lock in their winner, even if it’s the most chalk pick in the history of the program.

Duke is 100% guaranteed to win the 2018 National Championship

We all know that Duke's winning the national championship, so we don't have to worry about that. ... Play one shining moment right now. Yes, it's over.

Good luck to everyone's brackets, except for the people at CBS who decided alphabetical order was a good idea.

Bet the favorite in the second half if they are losing at halftime

If a favorite is losing in the first half, you just bet the favorite in the second half. That's it. I invented that last year.

This is a common but risky betting strategy known as 'chasing the chalk'. Its success is entirely dependent on the specific game.

My NFL career would have been much different with a coach other than Jeff Fisher

Definitely, definitely [it would have gone differently with a different coach]. I don't put nothing on Coach Fish. He had a little bit of something to do with it. But, I mean, I always put myself and blame myself.

While speculative, the friction between Young and Fisher is well-documented in NFL history.
