Mid-range jumpers are an 'awful shot' unless a player is shooting at least 60%

It's just all about the efficiency. Like, I mean, if you're shooting 60% on them, like go ahead and take them. That's 1.2 [points per possession]. But the problem is most of the guys are shooting like in the 30% and 40%. And that's an awful shot at those percentages.

Mathematically, 0.7 or 0.8 points per possession (the result of 35-40% on 2s) is considered inefficient offense in modern basketball.

Drake is a corny person but his songs are awesome

I'm reserving the right to still think that Drake is corny. [But] his songs are awesome. I think he might have some talent in it. His songs go, as the kids say. He's growing as an artist.

Whether Drake is corny is inherently subjective.

The Chicago Bulls are finally building a winning culture by trading for Nikola Vucevic

The Bulls basically took the entire Garpax regime and threw it in the trash can today, which was awesome. Vucevic coming to Chicago... I'm sick of missing the playoffs and getting the seventh pick and getting a guy that we have to wait on and hope is good. If you want to eventually be a team that can win in the playoffs, you have to make the playoffs. You have to have a culture of hey, we're trying to compete.

The Bulls did make the play-in/playoffs in subsequent years, but the Vucevic trade is widely regarded as a failure in hindsight as the team remained stuck in mediocrity.

The Heat made a great trade by acquiring Victor Oladipo from the Rockets

Oladipo to Miami is a great trade. Yeah, the Rockets somehow, the James Harden trade now is going to look even worse because they have nothing from that.

Oladipo only played 4 games for the Heat that season before suffering another season-ending injury, and his tenure in Miami was plagued by health issues, never living up to the 'great trade' billing.

A basketball team's pace of play does not correlate to their defensive efficiency

I don't think pace of play correlates to defensive efficiency at all, which you can tell. I mean, we're top three in the country in defensive efficiency. We've been number one for a few weeks... on our offense is one of the fastest, if not the fastest in power five. So I think we can still push the pace on offense and then demand a lot out of them on defense and get stops.

Statistically, defensive efficiency is measured on a per-possession basis, so pace (number of possessions) should theoretically be independent, though high pace can lead to fatigue. Oats is correct that teams can be elite at both.

The Alabama football team would win a few games if they played a college basketball schedule

Devontae Smith can probably get up and down on our pace a little bit. I think Mac Jones would be a... you know he's actually good. Bryce Young, I've seen Bryce Young play a little hoop. He can hoop a little bit. We could play a little smash mouth on the offensive glass. I don't know how skilled they'd all be, but we'd make it fun for sure. We'd win a few. We'd get out there and win a few games.

This is a hypothetical claim that cannot be verified.

Soft basketball teams cannot win in the NCAA Tournament in March

You've got to get to the free throw line. Soft teams can't win in March. There you go. That was a Buffalo quote. I had a few quotes at Buffalo... quit avoiding contact. Get your butt to the free throw line.

This is a subjective coaching philosophy, though Alabama (his team) lost in the Sweet 16 shortly after this interview.
