Mike Miller and Randy Moss on NBA Greatness, Preakness Picks, and Playoff Deaths
The emotional roller coaster of the postseason is in full swing. PFT is mourning the Capitals after a brutal Game 5 exit that saw the Hurricanes squeeze the life out of Washington. Despite being on the glass with his mom for Mother’s Day week, the vibes weren't enough to overcome a slow-looking Alex Ovechkin.
Alex Ovechkin should not have been on the power play during Game 5
Ovy did not look well on the ice tonight. He looked pretty slow... I almost think that he shouldn't even be on the power play right now. Because he wasn't, he did not look like he was moving around like the Ovy that we saw in the regular season.
While PFT is in a gap, Hank is back in the winner's circle. Hank headed to Boston to save the Celtics’ season, successfully willing them to a Game 5 win without Kristaps Porzingis. Between double fist-pumping on the wood and having a courtside showdown with Timothy Chalamet, Hank managed to keep the dream alive. Big Cat even had to admit that the Celtics rotation looks a lot more functional with the backup big man getting more run.
Luke Cornett is currently a better option for the Celtics than Kristaps Porzingis
Luke Cornett, like, I actually think that whatever Kristaps has, Luke Cornett is a better option than Kristaps right now. And Joe Mazzulla obviously agrees 'cause the second half he sat Kristaps.
Out West, the Nuggets forced a Game 7 against the Thunder in a game that felt like it swung on one specific moment of frustration from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's 'dumbest' frustration foul cost the Thunder the game against the Nuggets
I also think that game was, was basically... lost by the thunder because... SGA gets one of the worst dumbest fouls... a frustration foul on Jokic where he got the ball stolen and then 60 feet from the basket just like smacked him, got his fourth foul, had to sit for the last two minutes... and it felt like all the momentum switched.
With the Warriors getting bounced by the Timberwolves, the guys had to address the elephant in the room: the end of multiple eras. PFT floated the comparison of Steph Curry’s recent availability to a certain Sixers star, while Big Cat put a toe tag on the 'Playoff Jimmy' moniker after a disappearing act from the Heat star.
Jimmy Butler's era as 'Playoff Jimmy' is officially over
is this the death of playoff, Jimmy? ... He, the last two games he took 20 shots total. ... He's going to be 36 before next year. He's playoff Jimmy done.
Two-time NBA Champ Mike Miller joined the show in studio to talk about the transition from the court to the agency world. He shared incredible stories about LeBron gaining weight during games in Miami and the first time he saw Nikola Jokic at Nuggets practice.
Nikola Jokic is the best basketball player in the world and was since his rookie year
I thought he was the best basketball player in the world... I watched it and at the end of the practice they asked me, said, what'd you think? I said, I don't know who that fat kid is over there, but he's your best player. And it's not even close.
Mike Miller also gave us the scout's perspective on the upcoming NBA Draft and the future of Luka Doncic’s physical transformation after a grueling Finals run.
Luka Doncic will come back in elite shape next season due to the conditioning criticism
I think you're gonna see a different Luka. I do. I think you're gonna see Luka... I think he comes back in elite shape next year.
Randy Moss called in to talk Preakness and tried to figure out how to fix a sport where the Derby winner doesn't even show up for the second leg of the Triple Crown. He explains that until the calendar changes, the sport will keep losing its biggest rivalries to 'load management.'
The Triple Crown schedule must be adjusted as trainers will no longer run horses on two weeks' rest
The Preakness is a classic... but they think it is counterproductive to bring [Sovereignty] back in just two weeks... It's gonna happen more and more frequently in the future until such time as the Triple Crown races become further apart on the calendar.
Randy also gave us some value picks for the weekend, including a look at a horse that might just spoil the party for the favorite, Journalism.
Clever Again is a strong play to beat the favorite Journalism in the Preakness
There's another horse in the race called Clever Again, trained by Steve Asmussen... he's got speed. He's coming off a really strong race. He's had plenty of rest... I think [he's] a good play to take a shot against Journalism.
To wrap up the week, Fyre Fest featured PFT’s deep-seated hatred for Mike Greenberg’s suggestion that the NFL needs a draft lottery. If the NFL ever decides to take team-building advice from the NBA, we might as well just pack it in and move the pod to the sphere permanently.
At least we still have Max’s Wisconsin bachelor party vlog to look forward to.
