Kyle Shanahan and Peter King on Training Camp and Travel Woes
Big Cat and PFT are coming to you live from San Francisco as the 2018 Training Camp Tour continues. The energy is high, the NorCal vibes are chill, and Tiger Woods is the center of the universe after a massive weekend. Big Cat is officially ready to welcome Tiger back to the fold, but only because the results actually support it this time around.
Tiger Woods is officially back because he is contending in majors again
The Tiger's back crew that I despised for many years, the 2014-15 Tiger's back because he, you know, finished top 10 in a stupid tournament in Bermuda. That sucked. Now he's back because he's actually finishing second. I think he shot like six under today. He had that tiger stalk. He's back.
PFT took it a step further, using some creative accounting to crown Tiger as the true champion of the summer major season based on the aggregate scorecards.
Tiger Woods actually won the British Open and the PGA Championship on aggregate
He actually won the British Open and the PGA Championship on aggregate. His score from those two tournaments were the lowest of any professional golfer. So Tiger Woods, [is a] two-time back-to-back major title holder if you add it all up.
While Brooks Koepka actually took home the trophy, the guys aren't exactly ready to build him a statue. PFT tried to float a truly insane comparison regarding Koepka's peak versus Tiger's, which Big Cat immediately shut down.
Brooks Koepka is better than Tiger Woods was at his peak
Koepka is better than Tiger Woods was at his peak, right? He's bombing his driver. Tiger at his peak... No, I just think he's underappreciated. All he does is win majors.
Big J Journalism and Travel Grievances
Before getting into the team meetings, Big Cat and PFT sat down with the legendary Peter King. The Big J journalist joined them for a Mount Rushmore of travel complaints that proved he was born for this segment. Peter King went deep on specific Marriott policies and the biological warfare that is a serial farter on a small commuter plane. He even took some credit for the success of his favorite beverage.
Allagash White is my number one micro-brew and I am responsible for making the brand famous
But the last one is Allagash White, which I made famous. I mean, it's a little bit of a cliche, but I mean, I have two or three Allagash Whites a week. I mean, it's good beer. What more can I tell you?
Big Cat used the draft to pivot away from literal travel and air his grievances with the NBA's lack of officiating integrity, specifically when it comes to the Houston Rockets' star player.
James Harden's step-back move is a travel every single time
All right, my third travel complaint is James Harden's little step-back move that he does. That is absolutely a travel. It's a walk every single time. He travels, and they never call it. It's disgusting.
Inside the 49ers with Kyle Shanahan
Sitting in the grounds crew area of Levi's Stadium, Kyle Shanahan joined the show to talk about the hype surrounding the Niners and his reputation as a "boy genius." He was surprisingly candid about the culture he's building in San Francisco, emphasizing that the team's chemistry is a real competitive edge.
A team's closeness and culture is a tangible advantage on the field
I always feel the tighter team, the closer team, has an advantage over the team that's not as tight. And the only way you do that is by hanging here, spending time together. I like to put ping pong tables in there just so people kick it and they don't go home right away.
Naturally, the conversation turned to Jimmy Garoppolo. While everyone knows Jimmy G is a certified handsome man, Shanahan is more focused on the lightning-fast release that makes his offensive scheme hum.
Jimmy Garoppolo is an elite thrower with exceptional release speed
Jimmy, he's an elite thrower. I think everyone can see his arm talent, how quickly he can get rid of the ball. Even if you don't block very well, he can speed it up so fast that it's very hard to get to him.
The interview also touched on Shanahan's past, specifically his time in Washington and the Super Bowl run with Atlanta. He pushed back on the idea that defenses ever truly figured out his scheme, attributing the drop-off more to execution and health than a schematic shift.
Defenses never actually 'caught up' to the zone read; execution and health just failed
Personally don't think [defenses] ever did [catch up]. It was the lack of being able to continue doing it... There's no hey defense learned how to stop it. Yeah, they just have to play simpler which allows you to open up everything else.
Speaking of that Super Bowl, Shanahan didn't shy away from the play-calling scrutiny that has followed him since the Falcons blew that 28-3 lead. He walked the guys through the logic of the second half and pinpointed exactly what he would change if he had a do-over.
I regret throwing the ball on 2nd and 10 in field goal range during Super Bowl 51
The one regret I had is after we got down there was throwing it on second and 10. I wish I just ran it. But I also didn't plan on us getting a sack. We got four guys out, thought we could end it right there, and I thought if it wasn't, we'd throw it away, and we didn't.
He also remains a bit salty about the officiating in that game, specifically a call that negated a massive play by Mohamed Sanu that could have iced the championship.
The holding call on Mohamed Sanu in Super Bowl 51 was a suspect flag
Mohamed Sanu got us right back in the field goal range, but our left tackle had a holding kill, which put us in a third and 30... Mohamed Sanu beat man-to-man coverage, and it was over like that. But then there was a flag there, which – It still is a suspect flag, but it is what it is.
Who's Back and Closing Thoughts
In Who's Back, the guys addressed the new equipment setup which has them feeling a bit more corporate than they'd like. Big Cat is worried that the transition to more professional gear might be changing their public image.
These new microphones officially make us look like douchebags
We look like fucking idiots with these new mics. I mean it sounds better I think so it looks like cool... but I do feel like we are officially douchebags. This is now official... like just close your eyes and be like the douchebags who have a podcast, this is what they do.
They also looked at the chaos of training camps around the league, specifically in Pittsburgh where security seems to be optional for anyone with a helmet and a dream.
Mike Tomlin has officially lost control of the Steelers
So my who's back is Mike Tomlin losing control of his team. Because like you just alluded to. This tweet, a fan dressed in pads and a helmet made it past security and tried to take part in some drills at the beginning of today's practice. What kind of fucking training camp are you running Mike Tomlin?
Just remember, if you see a man in pads trying to join the Steelers' offensive line drills, it's probably just a fan who took "next man up" a little too literally.
