Peter King joins the show for Mt Rushmore of travel complaints ( - ). 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan joins the show to talk about being a Head Coach at such a young age, what he looks for in a Quarterback, regrets from the Falcons/Patriots Super Bowl, and his ankle tattoo with Chris Simms initials ( - ) . Kyle Shanahan and Peter King on Training Camp and Travel Woes

Big Cat and PFT are coming to you live from San Francisco as the 2018 Training Camp Tour continues. The energy is high, the NorCal vibes are chill, and Tiger Woods is the center of the universe after a massive weekend. Big Cat is officially ready to welcome Tiger back to the fold, but only because the results actually support it this time around.

Tiger Woods is officially back because he is contending in majors again

The Tiger's back crew that I despised for many years, the 2014-15 Tiger's back because he, you know, finished top 10 in a stupid tournament in Bermuda. That sucked. Now he's back because he's actually finishing second. I think he shot like six under today. He had that tiger stalk. He's back.

Tiger Woods went on to win the Tour Championship in 2018 and the Masters in 2019, confirming he was indeed 'back' at a high level.

PFT took it a step further, using some creative accounting to crown Tiger as the true champion of the summer major season based on the aggregate scorecards.

Tiger Woods actually won the British Open and the PGA Championship on aggregate

He actually won the British Open and the PGA Championship on aggregate. His score from those two tournaments were the lowest of any professional golfer. So Tiger Woods, [is a] two-time back-to-back major title holder if you add it all up.

While factually true that his combined score was lowest, he did not win the actual trophies.

While Brooks Koepka actually took home the trophy, the guys aren't exactly ready to build him a statue. PFT tried to float a truly insane comparison regarding Koepka's peak versus Tiger's, which Big Cat immediately shut down.

Brooks Koepka is better than Tiger Woods was at his peak

Koepka is better than Tiger Woods was at his peak, right? He's bombing his driver. Tiger at his peak... No, I just think he's underappreciated. All he does is win majors.

Tiger Woods' peak is widely considered the greatest stretch of golf in history; Koepka, while great, never reached those statistical heights.

Big J Journalism and Travel Grievances

Before getting into the team meetings, Big Cat and PFT sat down with the legendary Peter King. The Big J journalist joined them for a Mount Rushmore of travel complaints that proved he was born for this segment. Peter King went deep on specific Marriott policies and the biological warfare that is a serial farter on a small commuter plane. He even took some credit for the success of his favorite beverage.

Allagash White is my number one micro-brew and I am responsible for making the brand famous

But the last one is Allagash White, which I made famous. I mean, it's a little bit of a cliche, but I mean, I have two or three Allagash Whites a week. I mean, it's good beer. What more can I tell you?

The quality of the beer is subjective, and his role in its fame is an unprovable personal claim.

Big Cat used the draft to pivot away from literal travel and air his grievances with the NBA's lack of officiating integrity, specifically when it comes to the Houston Rockets' star player.

James Harden's step-back move is a travel every single time

All right, my third travel complaint is James Harden's little step-back move that he does. That is absolutely a travel. It's a walk every single time. He travels, and they never call it. It's disgusting.

While controversial, the NBA officially clarified that his signature move is legal under the 'gather step' rule.

Inside the 49ers with Kyle Shanahan

Sitting in the grounds crew area of Levi's Stadium, Kyle Shanahan joined the show to talk about the hype surrounding the Niners and his reputation as a "boy genius." He was surprisingly candid about the culture he's building in San Francisco, emphasizing that the team's chemistry is a real competitive edge.

A team's closeness and culture is a tangible advantage on the field

I always feel the tighter team, the closer team, has an advantage over the team that's not as tight. And the only way you do that is by hanging here, spending time together. I like to put ping pong tables in there just so people kick it and they don't go home right away.

Locker room culture is a widely accepted but unquantifiable advantage in pro sports.

Naturally, the conversation turned to Jimmy Garoppolo. While everyone knows Jimmy G is a certified handsome man, Shanahan is more focused on the lightning-fast release that makes his offensive scheme hum.

Jimmy Garoppolo is an elite thrower with exceptional release speed

Jimmy, he's an elite thrower. I think everyone can see his arm talent, how quickly he can get rid of the ball. Even if you don't block very well, he can speed it up so fast that it's very hard to get to him.

Garoppolo's quick release was statistically verified, though his 'elite' status as a thrower became highly debated.

The interview also touched on Shanahan's past, specifically his time in Washington and the Super Bowl run with Atlanta. He pushed back on the idea that defenses ever truly figured out his scheme, attributing the drop-off more to execution and health than a schematic shift.

Defenses never actually 'caught up' to the zone read; execution and health just failed

Personally don't think [defenses] ever did [catch up]. It was the lack of being able to continue doing it... There's no hey defense learned how to stop it. Yeah, they just have to play simpler which allows you to open up everything else.

The continued success of mobile QBs like Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts using these concepts suggests Shanahan was correct that the scheme remains viable.

Speaking of that Super Bowl, Shanahan didn't shy away from the play-calling scrutiny that has followed him since the Falcons blew that 28-3 lead. He walked the guys through the logic of the second half and pinpointed exactly what he would change if he had a do-over.

I regret throwing the ball on 2nd and 10 in field goal range during Super Bowl 51

The one regret I had is after we got down there was throwing it on second and 10. I wish I just ran it. But I also didn't plan on us getting a sack. We got four guys out, thought we could end it right there, and I thought if it wasn't, we'd throw it away, and we didn't.

This is a personal regret about a historical event.

He also remains a bit salty about the officiating in that game, specifically a call that negated a massive play by Mohamed Sanu that could have iced the championship.

The holding call on Mohamed Sanu in Super Bowl 51 was a suspect flag

Mohamed Sanu got us right back in the field goal range, but our left tackle had a holding kill, which put us in a third and 30... Mohamed Sanu beat man-to-man coverage, and it was over like that. But then there was a flag there, which – It still is a suspect flag, but it is what it is.

Officiating calls are inherently subjective, but Shanahan still views it as a key error.

Who's Back and Closing Thoughts

In Who's Back, the guys addressed the new equipment setup which has them feeling a bit more corporate than they'd like. Big Cat is worried that the transition to more professional gear might be changing their public image.

These new microphones officially make us look like douchebags

We look like fucking idiots with these new mics. I mean it sounds better I think so it looks like cool... but I do feel like we are officially douchebags. This is now official... like just close your eyes and be like the douchebags who have a podcast, this is what they do.

Inherently subjective self-assessment.

They also looked at the chaos of training camps around the league, specifically in Pittsburgh where security seems to be optional for anyone with a helmet and a dream.

Mike Tomlin has officially lost control of the Steelers

So my who's back is Mike Tomlin losing control of his team. Because like you just alluded to. This tweet, a fan dressed in pads and a helmet made it past security and tried to take part in some drills at the beginning of today's practice. What kind of fucking training camp are you running Mike Tomlin?

Hot TakeFootballHotSarcastic
Hyperbolic take based on a single odd security incident; Tomlin remained coach for years after.

Just remember, if you see a man in pads trying to join the Steelers' offensive line drills, it's probably just a fan who took "next man up" a little too literally.

Brooks Koepka's lack of popularity is because his name is hard to pronounce

Because his name is hard to pronounce. People just don't say his name. That's what I'm saying. I always just avoid names I can't say. So I just don't ever say his name... It's like, bro, I don't know how to say his name. So I'm just not going to look dumb.

Subjective theory on sports marketing and fan engagement.

The Bellerive course was a sickening disgrace to the PGA Championship

Sickening showing by the course this weekend. Disgusting. Lowest, I think, score in a PGA Championship... I'm disappointed in you, St. Louis. Yet again. Lock up the course.

The scoring was indeed record-breakingly low, making the 'disgrace' label a matter of preference for difficulty.

Little League sound bites will soon become fake and self-aware, ruining the magic

Do you think there will be a point where these kids become a little self-aware and start doing this? Because Big Al is, like, so beautiful because he's genuine. But we're going to get to that point where they're going to try to start making sound bites and stuff, and it's going to ruin it.

Over the years, LLWS introductions have become increasingly meme-focused and clearly rehearsed for viral impact.

Jalen Ramsey's suspension is actually a great treat for him because he gets to sit in the air conditioning

That's why Jalen Ramsey was so smart to get suspended. True. That's a great treat for him. For going after the media. Yeah. Got to keep us in check.

It's an ironic take on a player's motivation.

Jason Garrett is on a toasty hot seat in Dallas

I'm going to see the Dallas Cowboys in Oxnard, California. [Jason Garrett's hot seat?] I think it's toasty. It's toasty.

Garrett survived the 2018 season but was eventually fired after the 2019 season.

Having a fullback allows the offense to dictate the game to the defense

I like to dictate what the offense wants to do. And when you don't have a fullback in the game, the defense can dictate it a lot... When you have a fullback in the game, it doesn't matter what the defense does. If you want to run it, you can, and they know that.

Shanahan's offenses have consistently been top-tier while utilizing Kyle Juszczyk as a focal point.

Johnny Manziel was set up to fail by being drafted higher than his production warranted

I thought Johnny, you know, he was put in an unfair situation where I thought he was taken higher than what he could produce. And that's a lot of pressure on a guy... I think he was set up to fail from the beginning.

Manziel's NFL career was short and unsuccessful, aligning with Shanahan's 'set up to fail' assessment.
