Baker Mayfield, Mt Rushmore Of Video Games, Jalen Brunson's New Deal + Monday Reading

Monday, July 15, 202412 takes

We start the show coming out as the first sports podcast 100 percent against assasination attempts (-). Jalen Brunson's new deal is a head scratcher but awesome for the Knicks (-). Euro Finals and Copa plus Wimbledon (-). We call Christian Yelich to make sure he's not competing in the home run derby (-). Who's back of the week including apparently the Espy's already happened (-). Mt Rushmore of video games in honor of EA Sports College Football coming back and we decide a punishment (-). Baker Mayfield joins the show to talk about his crazy past few years, finding a home in Tampa, random drug piss tests, seeing a UFO, and tons more (-). We finish with a Monday reading (-).

Baker Mayfield on Tampa, UFOs, and the Mount Rushmore of Video Games

We are officially back from chill week, and Big Cat and PFT Commenter are coming out swinging as the only sports podcast that is 100% anti-assassination. The energy was electric as the guys broke down a massive weekend in sports, starting with Jalen Brunson basically becoming a saint in the eyes of New York by leaving over $100 million on the table to keep the Knicks competitive.

Jalen Brunson taking a massive pay cut is the coolest move possible for a fan

Pretty much the coolest move you can do if you're a fan of the Knicks. I don't think players, I think players should get what they're worth, but I wouldn't complain if our were Knicks fan right now that he just left 113 million on the table to make his team better and hope and deliver a championship to the Knicks.

This is subjective, but generally hailed as a fan-favorite move in NBA history.

While the Knicks are on cloud nine, the same can't be said for England soccer fans. After another heartbreaking loss in the Euro finals, PFT has officially seen enough of the "it's coming home" narrative.

England soccer is never going to 'come home'

It's not coming home. Not coming home. It's never gonna come home. It left, it walked out the door. You got empty Nest syndrome. It's not coming back. England soccer is just, it's gotta be brutal to root for.

England lost the Euro 2024 final shortly before this recording.

To fix the US Men's National Team, PFT is suggesting a move that would certainly bring the grit: hiring Dan Campbell. Between the soccer talk and some nervous weather updates from Hank about tornadoes hitting Chicago, Big Cat had to admit he’s been lying to himself for years about how weather actually works.

I mistakenly believed tornadoes do not hit big cities just to make myself feel better

You gotta worry about the tornado—tornadoes don't hit cities though. That's good. Like big cities... False tornadoes can hit anywhere at any time. Okay. I, I just made that up. I completely made it up. Okay. But... That was something I just told myself to make myself feel better.

As Big Cat admits in the clip, tornadoes can and do hit big cities (e.g., Nashville, Salt Lake City, Fort Worth).

Olympic Expectations and Mount Rushmore

With the Olympics right around the corner, the expectations for Team USA basketball are sky-high. Big Cat is demanding more than just a win: he wants total destruction of the field.

I will not celebrate a Team USA gold medal if the semi-final or final games are within 10 points

I'm gonna say right now I will not, I'm not okay with just a gold medal. I want domination. I want utter domination... I will not be celebrating a gold medal if we win the semi-finals—if the semi-finals or the finals games are within 10 points. Either of them. I will not be celebrating this gold medal.

The US won the semi-final by 4 (95-91) and the final by 11 (98-87). Since the semi-final was within 10 points, the condition for Big Cat's 'refusal to celebrate' was met.

PFT echoed the sentiment, wanting to see the 1992 Dream Team level of dominance where the coach doesn't even bother to use a timeout because the game is so far out of reach.

I want to see the US Men's Basketball team dominate the Olympics like the 1992 Dream Team

I want to see domination. Like the original dream team. That's the statement. Where you don't use a timeout at all. Just mow them down.

The 2024 Team USA went 6-0 and won gold, but several games (including the semi-final against Serbia) were very close, failing the 'domination' test.

The main event of the first half was the Mount Rushmore of Video Games, perfectly timed with the release of EA Sports College Football 25. The draft was a nostalgic heater, featuring classics like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, and Mario Kart. However, Big Cat made it very clear which baseball game stands above the rest, much to PFT's regret for missing it.

MVP Baseball 2005 is the greatest baseball game ever created

MVP Baseball 2005 was the greatest baseball player—was MVP Baseball? Yeah. The greatest baseball game. I think '04 as well was very good... those two versions were so, so elite.

Subjective ranking of video games.

Baker Mayfield Returns

Good friend of the program Baker Mayfield joined the show for the first time in years. It’s been a wild ride for Baker since his last appearance, going from Cleveland to Carolina, a quick stop in LA, and finally finding a home and a massive contract in Tampa. He was incredibly candid about how low things got in Carolina and how that Thursday night game with the Rams changed everything.

My brief stint with the Rams saved my NFL career

Going to LA just for that like last five games of the year was so unbelievable for me. Like getting a fresh start... it brought the fun back and like, that's when I'm having fun, talking trash, enjoying it. Like that's when I'm at my best and yeah. I, I needed that.

This is a subjective career reflection by the player themselves.

Baker also went to bat for his teammates, specifically Mike Evans. He argued that Evans is the most consistent player in the league and deserves to be mentioned among the all-time greats if he keeps his current pace for just a few more seasons.

Mike Evans is a top 5 receiver of all time if he plays a few more years

If he plays three, four more years the way he's been playing, he's a top five receiver of all time. No he is... he's had 10 seasons in a row of a thousand yards. And he's the consistent one. Right. And like he doesn't get that recognition.

Subjective all-time ranking.

Beyond football, things got weird. Baker told a story about driving home in Austin and seeing a massive, bright UFO that Emily also witnessed before it simply vanished. He also addressed the rumors about his friendship with Adam Schefter, confirming that the NFL's top news breaker is actually a lockbox when it comes to keeping secrets.

Adam Schefter is one of the few media members you can actually trust with off-the-record information

Adam and I actually are close... he's one of the media members you can actually trust that if it's off the record, it's not going anywhere. Like he actually will keep it close to the vest.

A personal assessment of professional character.

The show wrapped up with a Monday Reading about a guy who bought a lantern at a flea market and now wanders his apartment at night acting like a colonial watchman. Honestly, it sounds like he's just doing his duty to keep the ghosts away.

If the watchman says all is well, then all is well.

Dan Campbell would be a successful head coach for the US Men's National Soccer Team

Number four. I think Dan Campbell could do it actually. Absolutely. 'Cause what we need is we need passion out of our players. I think Dan Campbell will figure soccer out.

Dan Campbell was not hired; Mauricio Pochettino was.

Offsides should be removed from soccer

Offsides should be taken out of soccer. There should be no offsides.

I saw a bright circle UFO in Austin, Texas

Literally like, we got the, the screen on the car's real bright... Emily's in the passenger seat. She's looking at her phone, this like, like circle shape object. Like bright as hell. Literally just goes from right here and goes straight down. She was looking at her phone... it was so bright that she looked up and saw it too and it just like disappeared. Like completely disappeared.

While it's a personal account that can't be scientifically verified by a transcript, Baker is adamant about the claim.
