Cam Newton and Brandon Marshall on NFL Careers, Media, and Week 13 Preview
The show kicks off with a heavy dose of Thursday Night Football reaction after the Cowboys outlasted the Seahawks in a shootout that featured exactly zero punts. Big Cat is fully on the Dak Prescott MVP train, noting that the leap he’s taken in protecting the football has changed the ceiling for Dallas.
Dak Prescott is a legitimate NFL MVP candidate because he's taking better care of the football than last year
Dak Prescott's playing way better than last year. He is playing out of his mind. ... Last year he finished the season 23 touchdowns, 15 interceptions. This season through week 13, he's 23 touchdowns, six interceptions. He's having an awesome, awesome year. And he's up there for MVP.
PFT isn't quite ready to crown them yet, suggesting that despite the shiny record and Dak's stats, the structure of the team under Mike McCarthy remains the same volatile unit we saw a year ago.
The Dallas Cowboys are basically the same team they were last year
Dallas fans are so confident right now, as they should be. You're a good team, but you're basically the same team that you've been, or that you were last year at least. Yeah. Well, well, Mike McCarthy is the same guy that he was last year.
On the flip side, the Seahawks are staring down a brutal stretch that could effectively end their season before the holidays even arrive. Big Cat is smelling blood in the water for Geno Smith and company.
The Seahawks are in serious trouble because of their upcoming schedule against the Niners and Eagles
The Seahawks are in trouble... They have to play. Their next two games are against the Niners and the Eagles. And they, they can't keep losing and make the playoffs.
Week 13 Picks and the Bird Gauntlet
The guys transition into a massive Week 13 preview, focusing on the "Crown Jewel" of the slate: 49ers vs. Eagles. While the Niners have been talking a massive amount of trash about last year's NFC Championship game, Big Cat thinks the physical toll on Philly's defense might finally show up on the scoreboard.
The Niners will beat the Eagles this Sunday because Philadelphia's defense is gassed after playing 92 snaps last week
The Eagles have the defense... played 92 snaps on Sunday. That's a lot of snaps... I feel like the Niners have this game circled more than the Eagles can. And I think that like, this will be the NFC championship game in the Eagles will probably beat them in the NFC championship game. But I feel like this Sunday it's Niners.
This led to a deep dive into PFT’s legendary "Bird Gauntlet" theory. While Jake tried to present some logic, PFT stood firm on the mystical difficulty of defeating every winged mascot in the league.
No NFL team has ever completed the 'bird gauntlet' of beating every bird team in a single season
The bird gauntlet is playing against all of the bird teams. And no NFL team has ever beaten the bird gauntlet. It's never happened. ... No team has ever beaten every bird team in a single season in the history of the NFL.
In the NFC South, the stakes are apparently even higher than a playoff spot. PFT is predicting a literal coaching bloodbath for anyone in that division who doesn't finish on top.
Every NFC South coach who doesn't win the division will be fired
Whoever wins the NFC South will not fire their coach going into next season. Agreed. Every other team will... I'm not saying that they should... we can say the entire NFC South is coaching for their job.
Cam Newton and Brandon Marshall in Studio
The centerpiece of the episode is an incredible, wide-ranging interview with Cam Newton and Brandon Marshall. The energy in the room was electric as they discussed everything from Cam’s legendary 2010 Auburn run to the modern media landscape. Cam addressed his current status in the NFL, making it clear that while he’s building a media empire, the door isn't shut.
I will never officially retire from the NFL
I don't think I would ever retire. Oh. Oh... I'm one of those guys... if I were to come back at that particular point in time, it would be just for the fans... I'm just waiting on somebody to tick me off.
Brandon Marshall, ever the competitor, claimed he could still walk onto an NFL field today and be a productive asset, specifically at tight end, which prompted some classic "realist" pushback from Cam.
I could catch 10 passes in an NFL game today if I played tight end
I mean, at tight end? Sure. I could get 10 catches receiver three... slant back shoulder type... being savvy and understand how to get in certain positions.
Cam also went deep on the evolution of the quarterback position. He argued that the statue-esque success of guys like Peyton Manning actually hurt the perception of dual-threat QBs who create value in non-traditional ways.
Peyton Manning did the NFL a disservice by creating an unrealistic standard for athletic quarterbacks
Peyton Manning did this league a disservice... by having like, you know, 350 yards passing... All right, here comes Michael Vick. Here comes a Cam Newton... athletic quarterbacks that we're going to get the yards elsewhere... it's not the prototypical way. We're used to seeing yards being made.
They also discussed the current state of the Chicago Bears. Cam had a very specific vision for how to fix Justin Fields, suggesting the team needs to stop trying to force him into a traditional pocket-passer box and instead embrace the chaos of the no-huddle.
The Bears should put Justin Fields in a high-gear, uptempo offense
I would have that fucker in high gear. High gear... I think a beneficiary who would benefit off of a uptempo offense is Justin Fields. Because a tired lineman... does not want to run around trying to chase a quarterback. When they do uptempo and they let him like be himself, he looks great.
To wrap up the week, the guys hit Fantasy Fuccbois and a Fyre Fest segment that featured PFT accidentally sipping from his own old piss bottle—a moment of true grit and veteran savvy to keep the show moving.
Between Cam’s font app and Brandon’s unwavering belief in Russell Wilson’s leadership, it was a legendary Friday show to send us into the weekend.
