Football is officially back with all 32 NFL teams reporting to camp, which means it’s time to analyze quarterbacks based on nothing but their walking speed and baggy shorts. While PFT is vibing with the rookie class, Big Cat is keeping a close eye on the front offices, specifically the chaos in Dallas and Tampa Bay.
Jerry Jones is getting desperate to win now and is willing to trade future draft picks to do it
Jerry Jones wants to trade the future for now. He's getting desperate. I think he's finally realizing that everyone dies because he said he's willing to trade picks to make the team better right now.
Big Cat is convinced Jerry Jones has finally realized his own mortality and is ready to torch the Cowboys' future for one more run. Meanwhile, the vibes in Tampa have reached an all-time low. Between Vita Vea's trade request and the stagnation with Baker Mayfield’s contract, the guys are sensing a locker room revolt against the head coach.
The Buccaneers are on 'bummer watch' because their players want to leave specifically because of head coach Todd Bowles
We also had Vita Vea ask for a trade... Baker Mayfield could get a long-term deal, has not yet from the Bucks. Some feels wrong. And I think it's all about Todd Bowles. ... It has nothing to do with the players on the field. It has to do with Todd Bowles. ... The Bucks might be a bummer team. They might be on bummer watch.
The MLB is Broken
The conversation shifted to the diamond, where the outlook for baseball fans is grim. With rumors of owners and players being miles apart on the next CBA, PFT is calling his shot on the immediate future of the sport.
The MLB is almost certainly headed for a lockout during the next collective bargaining agreement negotiations
The lockout is probably gonna happen. Nothing's gonna change. I think it's almost a hundred percent that there will be a lockout for at least a period of time.
To fix the league, Big Cat has a galaxy-brain solution: the Dodgers should simply acquire every single good player left until the entire system collapses under its own weight and forces a salary cap.
I want the Dodgers to trade for Tarik Skubal just to break the MLB system and force a salary cap
I kind of want the Dodgers to get Tarik Skubal just to maybe push people to be like, 'Hey, we actually do need change and we need to play baseball.' ... If the Dodgers win another one and Skubal is their starting... their ace. Everyone's gonna be like, dude, this is so broken. We gotta figure it out. So then you ... we'll take a salary cap.
Hot Seat/Cool Throne
Hank brought the heat during Hot Seat, starting with the Buffalo Bills’ catastrophic failure in graphic design. While some alternate jerseys are cool, these new ones look like they belong in the MAC, not the AFC East.
The Buffalo Bills' new alternate jerseys are awful and somehow messed up a red, white, and blue color scheme
The Bills have great jerseys. I think Titus said it perfectly. The Bills somehow fucked up red, white, and blue. Those are their colors. And they messed that up.
On the Cool Throne, the guys discussed the Arizona Cardinals' low win totals and why Jacoby Brissett remains the ultimate professional for a team looking to secure a top draft pick without being too obvious about it.
Jacoby Brissett is the perfect quarterback for a team that wants to tank without looking like they are tanking
If you are looking to get the number one pick, but, but pretend like you were trying, Jacoby [Brissett] is the number one guy for that.
The biggest bombshell, however, was Hank finally admitting that his favorite secondary golf tour might be meeting its maker. After the cancellation of the final event in Detroit, the writing seems to be on the wall.
LIV Golf is effectively dead and the league will likely cancel its season before next year
I think Liv might be done. I mean, I think they were trying hard to find some new sponsors that looks like it's going a little harder than they expected. ... I think they canceled this event and it's looking like the league cancellation will probably happen at some point before next season.
Big Ten Media Days Interviews
Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell joined the show to discuss the future of the Badgers and his commitment to the program. Big Cat was thrilled to learn that Fickell is bringing back the fullback position in Madison, a move that is as much about psychological warfare as it is about short-yardage efficiency.
A rostered fullback makes an offense harder for opponents to prepare for in the Big 10
In particular in this league... if you can't line up in an I formation, if you can't do that, then you aren't as hard to prepare for as well. ... People are gonna have to prepare for whether it's two to 10 to 12 plays a game of someone that's gonna be lined up in some version of an I-base and it is gonna have some type of a lead block.
Lincoln Riley also stopped by to talk about USC’s transition to the Big Ten. Beyond the conference move, Riley went deep on his time with Mike Leach and what made the Pirate so successful. He also defended his infamous "Worcestershire bath" brisket and explained why Baker Mayfield needs a villain to be elite.
Baker Mayfield is a rare quarterback who actually plays much better when he is hyper-focused on hating the opponent
Most guys, you try to get them and write the right mindset or mental kind of mental frame of playing their best. Right? Most guys it's like, hey, don't focus on anything else, just play, don't worry about the outside noise. Baker's the few guys I've coached, complete opposite. He is way better when there is something on the other side that he's competing against that he hates. ... He has a unique ability to get himself like to the highest point of just juiced up, but then able to process and function at a high level.
Finally, Greg Schiano returned to the program to talk about his second rebuild at Rutgers. While he’s now dealing with a house full of cats—despite being allergic—he’s more optimistic than ever about the football program because the university is finally putting its money where its mouth is.
Rutgers now has the resources and vertical alignment to match expectations and win in the Big 10
I feel like I took a... third time a new job because when our board hired [the new administration] and all of a sudden I didn't have to be the fundraiser anymore. I didn't have to be the lead guy on NIL. ... But now we actually have resources that are gonna match expectations and I'm really excited about, we're getting better. ... there's a commitment, there's vertical alignment at Rutgers for the first time.
The show wrapped up with a Mount Rushmore of things we hated as kids but love as adults, where PFT nearly derailed the segment with an early pick of "spankings." It’s good to have football back.
Just remember, if you see a coach in a vest, he's probably one loss away from a crisis of faith.
