Billy’s 2023 QB Bracket, NBA Playoff Drama, and NHL Worry Levels

We’re coming to you remote this time, giving the show a bit of an old-school feel as we navigate a wild week in sports. The NBA playoffs are officially in the 'poking the bear' phase, and nobody is doing it louder than Dillon Brooks. After the Grizzlies took down the Lakers without Ja Morant, Brooks decided to let the world know he doesn't respect anyone until they drop 40 on him. Big Cat is already circling Game 3 as a defining moment for the King.

Game 3 against the Grizzlies is LeBron James' first true legacy game

It is now, I'm gonna say it right now. Game three for LeBron is a legacy game. His first ever legacy game. His entire legacy if he doesn't score 40.

The Lakers won Game 3 and LeBron had a solid game (25 pts), though he didn't score 40. The Lakers eventually won the series, preserving his legacy for that round.

While the Lakers deal with Brooks, the Timberwolves are dealing with a different kind of problem. PFT and Big Cat took some time to try and categorize Karl-Anthony Towns, who seems to occupy a unique space of being incredibly talented while simultaneously being the guy you least want in a big moment.

Karl-Anthony Towns is the 'worst best guy' in the NBA

Is Karl Anthony Towns just the, the worst like, best guy in the league. He's gotta be right. He probably the worst, best... He's so good. And he also sucks at the exact same time, right? He's the yeah, he's the best player that sucks.

This is a recurring theme for KAT, who often puts up big stats but struggles with foul trouble and consistency in high-stakes games.

Speaking of big moments, Max was live at the Sixers-Nets game and he didn't just see a win; he saw a conspiracy. Between the James Harden ejection and Joel Embiid narrowly avoiding one for a kick to the groin, Max is convinced the league was trying to manufacture a longer series for the TV ratings.

The NBA rigged Game 3 of the Sixers-Nets series to extend it

No, I mean it, it was just blatant at halftime. There was, there was something that happened. There was something that happened at halftime... The Nets had zero fouls in the second half until five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. It was insane. They obviously wanted a series they wanted, but they wanted the game to go more than four games.

The Sixers won the game and the series (sweep), making the 'rigging' ineffective if it existed.

Over in the NHL, the vibe is significantly more stressed. Hank is currently in the middle of a full-blown panic attack regarding the Bruins. Despite their historic regular season, the absence of Patrice Bergeron and the general pressure of the postseason has him fearing the worst for the Presidents' Trophy winners.

Presidents' Trophy winners rarely do well in the NHL playoffs

I don't know what the stats are, but for my personal feel, it doesn't feel like President's Cups teams do well.

This proved extremely prescient for the 2023 season; the record-breaking Bruins were upset in the first round by the Florida Panthers shortly after this episode aired.

In the spirit of high stakes, PFT decided to put his lungs on the line for the Toronto Maple Leafs. After seeing them actually show some signs of life, he's willing to go to extreme lengths if they finally pull off a Stanley Cup run.

I will smoke crack if the Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup

I'll smoke crack if the, if the [Maple Leafs] win the Stanley Cup. How about that? I'll match. I'll take a hit of secondhand crack.

The Maple Leafs lost in the second round of the 2023 playoffs to the Florida Panthers; the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup.

Then came the main event: Billy’s 2023 QB Bracket. In a segment that Big Cat accurately described as a 'stress test for the AWLs,' Billy broke down his top 12 prospects based on a mix of talent, frame, and whether or not they complain about handcuffs. Billy is particularly out on Bryce Young’s size, fearing the number one overall pick might just snap in half behind an NFL offensive line.

Bryce Young is too small and has a slender frame that will lead to injuries

I get the Bryce Young hype. I get it. The thing is... you can't put 30 pounds on Bryce Young. His frame is, his frame is just, it does, it's not gonna work. If you look at his frame, he's slender at the shoulders... Because of that, like, he's gonna be more injury prone.

Bryce Young has struggled in the NFL, partly due to size concerns, though injury hasn't been the primary issue so much as performance behind a bad line.

Billy also introduced some new scouting criteria: Pro Day leadership. He wasn't impressed by Anthony Richardson intentionality after hitting the ceiling with a pass, viewing it as a lack of originality rather than a display of freakish athleticism.

Anthony Richardson is a 'follower' because he copied Will Levis hitting the ceiling at his pro day

Anthony Richardson did it and said that he hit the roof on purpose because Will Levis did it. This is my red flag. I want my quarterback to be a leader, not a follower. Like he was copying someone else. He was like following the lead.

Richardson has been praised for his leadership in Indy, rendering this 'pro-day ceiling' concern irrelevant.

Despite the hype for the top guys, Billy’s bracket ended with a surprise winner. Between the hand size and the potential to land in a better developmental spot, Billy is riding with Hendon Hooker as the true gem of this class.

Hendon Hooker will be the best quarterback of the 2023 draft class

Hendon Hooker wins... I think Hendon Hooker has the best combination of falling to a bad spot and having good enough talent to like make it in the long run.

Hooker has barely played behind Jared Goff, while Stroud and Richardson have shown significantly more promise/production.

We wrapped things up with Fyre Fest of the week, featuring Big Cat’s 10-hot-dog marathon and Jake’s horrific ingrown toenail situation. We'll be back in the studio Sunday to kick off heavy draft coverage.

Just remember, if your quarterback can’t hit the ceiling at a Pro Day, he probably shouldn't be your quarterback.

The Warriors will win the next four games and sweep the rest of the Kings series

Or the Warriors a sweep from here on out. I was feeling that once you, once you, once you in PFT, once it got past like five minutes of Pro King stuff... this just screams warriors in the next four.

The Warriors won the series, but they didn't sweep the rest of the games. It went to a Game 7.

The LIV Tour will eventually do for golf what Tiger Woods did in the late 90s

You just give the live tour three years. And I predict that every kid, every young kid across America, it's gonna do for golf what Tiger Woods did for golf in 19 98, 19 99. It's gonna be a phenomenon.

While LIV merged with the PGA Tour in a sense, it hasn't created a 'Tiger-level' youth phenomenon, and its popularity remains contentious.

Tiger Woods could still win one more major despite his ankle surgery

Even after I just said that it felt dirty and it's like, I'm actually already back to maybe he could win one more because he is Tiger Woods... I'm going to erase my retroactive take and then stick with my original take that he could win one more.

Tiger has not won a major since this take. His health continues to be a major obstacle.

I am paying for Twitter Blue because I earned my checkmark as a journalist and don't want to lose it

I have no shame in paying for it because I earned it. We have the slogan of flags fly forever. I earned my check mark a few years ago, so I'm not just gonna let someone take away from it. I grew up on Twitter hoping to have a blue check mark and one day I got it. So like, here we go. I'm keeping it.

This is a subjective personal stance on his professional identity.

Big Cat will pay for a Twitter Blue checkmark within two weeks

I put the over under on Big Cat getting a blue check. Two weeks.

Big Cat remained unverified for several months as a bit before eventually getting a checkmark (which Elon Musk later gifted to many high-follower accounts for free anyway). He did not pay within two weeks.

CJ Stroud is a risky draft pick because he is an Ohio State quarterback

CJ Stroud is a very good QB. Very, very good. The only thing is that I got against him is that he's an Ohio State quarterback. And how many really great Ohio State quarterbacks we've seen coming out that just haven't really panned out

CJ Stroud had one of the greatest rookie seasons for a QB in NFL history, immediately debunking the 'OSU QB' stigma.

Stetson Bennett complaining about handcuffs during his arrest is a red flag for his pain tolerance in the NFL

I'm reviewing his body cam footage of his arrest and I, the only thing I didn't like about it was how he bitched about when they put his handcuffs on. He just kept, the first thing he did was complain about how painful the handcuffs were. And I'm like, look man, like pain is temporary, if you get banged up in the game and you start complaining like get your mentals like broken. ... if he's, if you know, if he's got a low pain tolerance, that's one thing.

Bennett has not yet had a significant NFL career to judge his pain tolerance, largely due to spending time on the reserve/non-football illness list as a rookie.
