Jeff Saturday on Playing with Peyton, the Chiefs' Struggles, and Week 15 Picks
The vibes were high and the sleep was low as Big Cat and PFT recorded a mid-blowout edition of the show while the Raiders were busy hanging 42 points on the Chargers in a single half. It was a historic display of a team completely checking out on their head coach, and the guys didn't miss the chance to eulogize Brandon Staley's career in real-time.
Brandon Staley will be fired immediately following the Chargers' blowout loss to the Raiders
I think Brandon Staley might get fired or he is fired already. He might be fired overnight. He might be fired right after this game because we're taping the rare taping in the third quarter of Thursday Night Football. It is 42 to zero. The Las Vegas Raiders versus the Los Angeles Chargers. PFT. He's gone. He has to be gone right now.
PFT was particularly ruthless regarding the legacy Staley leaves behind. For a guy who was once hailed as the boy genius of the spreadsheet era, his defense's inability to stop anything on the field has left the math guys looking for cover.
Brandon Staley has set the analytics community back 40 years
Really you could say Brandon Staley has set the analytics community back like 40 years. Because he's known as the analytics poster boy, the Wonder kid of the analytics movement and the fact that his teams have fallen apart so terribly really makes you think like, I don't want my head coach ever look at a number again.
Week 15 Previews and Picks
The Saturday slate of games is officially back, which usually signals the start of the NFL's hostile takeover of our entire holiday weekends. While the league eyes global expansion, PFT is drawing a line in the sand regarding where the biggest game of the year should stay.
The NFL will eventually host a Super Bowl overseas
They are trying like damn hell to get a Super Bowl overseas and we have to stop it. So let's all not watch the first quarter next year of all these games.
Moving to the actual games, the guys went deep on the Bengals and Vikings matchup. Jake Browning has been a great story, and PFT thinks there is some real staying power for Cincinnati's playoff hopes, even without Joe Burrow.
The Bengals could win a playoff game with Jake Browning at quarterback
I think the Bengals actually have a chance they could make some noise in the playoffs. How about that? I don't think that they have a chance to win the Super Bowl. I, but I, I could see them winning a playoff game with Jake Browning.
Big Cat, however, isn't sold on the Browning magic holding up against Brian Flores. He’s buying the Vikings' defense to make life miserable for the backup quarterback in a game that could go sideways quickly.
The Vikings will beat the Bengals because Brian Flores' defense will confuse Jake Browning
I kind of like the Vikings in this game. And I like him because Brian Flores... is doing stuff that people can't even figure out with his defense zone. Blitzes just... he's doing a lot of multiples... I think that this is gonna be Jake Browning's first test. True test because the Colts and the Jaguars aren't great defenses. The Vikings have been playing like a great defense.
In one of the weirdest logic leaps of the preview, Big Cat is all over the Steelers this week. Despite Pittsburgh losing to the dregs of the league recently, he’s convinced that the "Tomlin bounce back" is an inevitable law of the universe.
You must bet the Steelers to bounce back against the Colts after losing to the league's worst teams
The Steelers just lost to the Cardinals and the Patriots. Two of the worst four teams in the NFL. Mitch [Trubisky] looked really bad. The Steelers have looked really bad. You have to bet the Steelers. That's the vibe. The harder they bounce back.
Jeff Saturday Joins the Show
Former Colts head coach and Super Bowl champion center Jeff Saturday hopped on to talk some ball and settle the score on some of Peyton Manning’s recent comments. Saturday gave some incredible insight into the "rest vs. rust" debate that plagues every top seed this time of year.
It is more important for NFL teams to maintain rhythm by playing starters late in the season than it is to rest them
I think playing is the most important. I think what I learned throughout was timing and rhythm matter... so many times I thought we had the better team, but not playing up to those points, you got back out there, you kinda had to find the rhythm... I was much more about playing.
He also didn't hold back on the current state of the Saints' locker room. After seeing Derek Carr get yelled at by his own offensive linemen, Saturday noted that a quarterback playing at 80% capacity is often doing more harm than good for the team's chemistry.
Derek Carr is hurting the Saints by playing at 80% while significantly injured
If you're not playing to the level that we need you to play to, you are hurting us... the game is played in the margins and there's too many good players, right? It's just too many dudes who are that good at 70, 80%. Man, you just ain't cutting it... When you're seeing guys at each other in repeated weeks, that's when you know something's really there.
The conversation shifted to the struggling Chiefs, who look like a shell of their former selves. Saturday pointed to the departure of Eric Bieniemy as a massive loss for the team’s overall discipline and edge on the offensive side of the ball.
Eric Bieniemy's absence is a major reason for the Chiefs' offensive struggles and lack of discipline
The enemy not being there, it matters. I'm not saying that Andy Reed and these guys aren't great coaches, but Bieniemy had some nastiness about him, right? He had some significant conversations with their players, whether that's Mahomes or other people. And with him not being there, it does get into a place where maybe some things have been allowed or tolerated to a different degree... I do think the enemy not being there hurts because those players in the room are ultimately the guys who have to execute it.
Before letting him go, the guys asked for his Super Bowl prediction. While many are jumping off the Eagles' bandwagon after a few rough weeks, Saturday is staying the course, though he ultimately sees a collision course between the two most physical teams in the league.
The Super Bowl will be a matchup between the 49ers and the Ravens
I'm gonna go... I think it's gonna be KC in Baltimore and the AFC, I think Baltimore's gonna go... and I think San Fran... I'm taking San Fran and Phi... I'm taking San Fran walking through it to play [the winner of the AFC].
Fantasy Fuccbois and Fyre Fest
The episode wrapped up with a loopy edition of Fantasy Fuccbois featuring a very distracted Hank and PFT's new, suspiciously dark mustache. PFT claims it’s for the holidays, but the guys spent half the segment trying to figure out why he looks like a Civil War general.
Between PFT's new hobby of magnet fishing for guns in the Chicago River and Big Cat being held hostage by his four-year-old son’s threats to scream the house down, it’s clear the holiday stress is starting to peak.
Good luck to everyone in the first round of the fantasy playoffs, except for whoever is playing against a Deebo Samuel owner.
