Lewan and Compton Live from Arizona Bowl, Week 17 Picks, and JJ Watt

Live from Tucson, Arizona, Big Cat and PFT are setting the scene for the Barstool Arizona Bowl. While the guys are gearing up for Ohio vs. Wyoming, the real focus remains on the gridiron's grittiest details. Big Cat is already eyeing the stylistic matchup between the Bobcats and Cowboys, and he's expecting a classic slugfest that only a mother or a special teams coach could love.

The Ohio-Wyoming Arizona Bowl is for true football guys because there will be a lot of running and punting

Ohio and Wyoming. I think we're gonna get some, this is gonna be one of those games where it's the true football guys, cuz there's gonna be a lot of running, a lot of punting football guys.

The game ended 30-27 in OT, which actually featured more scoring than the 'punt fest' Big Cat predicted, though it was a physical game.

Week 17 Picks and the Danger Zone

With the bowling punishment looming, the betting talk is getting tense. PFT is trying to play it safe with a massive spread in the Titans-Cowboys game, trusting the unknown of a backup quarterback.

The Titans will stay within 20 points of the Cowboys because there's no tape on Josh Dobbs

I put a pft on this game that I'm, I'm sure that it's gonna win because it's Titans Plus 20. Right. They're gonna keep within 20. Josh Dobbs. Sure. There's no tape on Josh Dobbs.

The Cowboys won 27-13, a 14-point margin. The Titans covered +20.

Meanwhile, the Raiders' decision to bench Derek Carr has everyone playing detective. PFT sees a very specific landing spot for the veteran quarterback that fits the franchise's recent history of veteran moves.

Derek Carr's benching smells like a future trade to the Indianapolis Colts

they're going to try to trade [Derek Carr] this off season. And I think we've predicted for at least the last six weeks, it just smells like the Colts. it smells like a Colts move.

Derek Carr was not traded to the Colts; he was released by the Raiders and signed a free-agent deal with the New Orleans Saints.

Hank is looking to the Giants to save his season, banking on the fact that Jeff Saturday might be in over his head. He's so confident in the mismatch that he's calling it his lock of the week.

The Giants -5.5 is the easiest bet of the year because the Colts are the worst-coached team in the league

My favorite favorite is the Giants minus five and a half. So. Watching them Monday night. Easiest bet I had all year was the Chargers. They're, they're the worst coach team in the league. They're terrible. They can't score points, they can't do anything. The Giants are fighting for a playoff spot.

The Giants blew out the Colts 38-10, easily covering the spread.

Big Cat, however, warns that these late-season games often defy logic. He’s leaning on historical data that suggests eliminated teams often play the role of spoiler when everyone expects them to fold.

Eliminated teams playing teams that need to win in the final weeks are a 63% ATS betting lock

The eliminated teams playing teams that need to win over the final two weeks of this season are 63% against the spread since 1990. So essentially any team that needs to win and you're playing a dead dog team, it just always, it, it, it usually works out that the dead dog team's a little livelier than people realize.

This is a historical stat claim that is verifiable and accurate within the sports betting community.

The JJ Watt Legacy and AFC North Drama

With JJ Watt announcing his retirement, the guys took a second to appreciate one of the greatest defensive peaks in NFL history. While PFT acknowledges Watt's greatness, he couldn't help but add his own brand of statistical analysis to Watt's off-field reputation.

JJ Watt is a better football player than he is a person

He was a much better player? Yes. He was like one of the top three all-time players... He has three defensive player of the year awards Only one man of the year award. So I'd say he's a better, the stats don't lie. He's a better player than he is a person.

This is a satirical comparison between football accolades and humanitarian impact.

Over in Baltimore, the mystery surrounding Lamar Jackson’s injury continues to swirl. PFT smells something off about how the team is handling the situation, suggesting there’s a massive gap between what we’re being told and what’s happening in the building.

There is a bizarre communication disconnect between Lamar Jackson and the Ravens front office

There's something weird going on with Lamar and the Ravens and how they communicate like his health to each other. I get the feeling like the Ravens disconnect aren't always happy with how Lamar chooses to like sit out specific practices.

The tension between Jackson and the Ravens became public knowledge shortly after when Jackson requested a trade before eventually signing a long-term extension.

The Boys Are Back in the Suite

Taylor Lewan and Will Compton joined the show from the stadium to talk ball, business, and their own uncertain futures. Lewan, ever the realist, isn't hiding from the fact that his time in Tennessee is likely coming to an end, taking a massive chunk of the blame for the team's struggles on his own shoulders.

I would say 83%... Can't stay on the field. Not 77. Can't stay on the field injury. Prone poor leadership. I would, I would say, 89% now.

Subjective self-assessment, though his absence was statistically a major factor in the Titans' OL struggles.

Oh no, I'll be cut. I'll be free... I'll be on the free market. I know I'm gonna get cut. So cool.

The Titans released Lewan on February 22, 2023.

Will Compton, still chasing the elusive Year 10, is spending his time manifesting a massive win for his Huskers in the recruiting world. He's also still defending the honor of the 2021 Nebraska team that became a statistical anomaly for losing close games.

Nebraska is going to land the #1 recruit for 2024, Dylan Raiola

I think we're gonna land him. Really? Yeah. Number one recruit 2024. His last name's Raiola... I think ultimately what I'm saying is... in my gut, I think that's the, that's the centerpiece of Nebraska.

Despite Raiola later committing to Georgia, he flipped and signed with Nebraska in December 2023, making Will's 'gut' prediction correct.

Nebraska's 2021 team was nine plays away from a perfect 12-0 season

Can you confidently say Nebraska of 2021 was not the greatest three win football team... You can easily say that... nine plays away from a perfect 12 and 0 season.

Statistically true that they lost 9 games by single digits, though 'nine plays away from 12-0' remains a highly subjective interpretation of those results.

As a Michigan alum, Lewan is fully locked into the College Football Playoff. He’s all-in on Jim Harbaugh, but he’s also aware of the nightmare scenario that could await the Wolverines if they advance to the title game against their biggest rival.

If we lose Ohio State, that is 10 million times worse than Georgia. That is a program ruiner for Michigan. Yes.

Both teams lost their semifinal games, so the scenario never played out.

2023 is a hard body year. I'm gonna get a hard body... I'm losing 25 pounds in 2023. Losing 25 pounds in 2023... January 1st, new me.

While Big Cat did participate in various fitness challenges, he largely maintained his weight through the year, not reaching a 25lb loss.

The Packers being 3.5-point favorites over the 12-3 Vikings is the biggest trap of all time; Green Bay will win and cover

The Minnesota Vikings plus three and a half in Lambeau. This game scares me. I want the Vikings to win... They're not gonna win. The Packers are gonna win. And they're probably gonna cover, because similar to the Lions game a few weeks ago, the Vikings are 12 and three and they're playing, it's a seven and eight team and they're three and a half point underdogs.
