Max Homa on Ryder Cup and Taylor Swift, Vernon Davis on the Commanders
We are officially less than three weeks away from the return of football, and Big Cat and PFT are reaching that level of desperation where preseason injuries and training camp skirmishes feel like lifeblood. The show opens with a heavy dose of reading headlines to bridge the gap, covering everything from the NBA’s lack of tackling to Jameson Williams’ seemingly cursed career path.
Jameson Williams might be cursed
Jameson Williams might be cursed because if you remember, he's already out for six games for gambling and now he's out [for the preseason]... he missed most of last year. They were using the preseason to try to get him reps... Now he's out again. He might be cursed.
PFT also floated some radical changes to the NBA's scoring system to make it more palatable for football fans who need a high-scoring fix.
The NBA should adopt tackle rules and change point scoring to mimic the NFL
The NBA needs to learn a lot about sports from the NFL namely like allow tackling and that sort of thing... make your goals worth three points. Make penalty kicks worth two. Boom. It's very easy to do. And you get the illusion of higher scoring.
Max Homa at Olympia Fields
Our good friend Max Homa joined the show in person from the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields. While the guys walked the course with him, the conversation quickly turned to the "P-word"—potential. Max made it very clear that while he appreciates the support, some of the recurring bits from the gallery are starting to wear thin when he's trying to close out a tournament.
I am anti the 'P-word' [Potential] and I don't condone fans yelling it at me on the golf course
I'm anti-P-word. I will not laugh. I don't condone it. I'm not cool with that one... I also am trying to win things. I'll take anything that's just not the P-word.
Aside from golf, Max is a massive Dodgers fan and recently attended the Taylor Swift Eras Tour. He shared a brilliant piece of trash talk for any Clippers fans who try to come at him about his sports allegiances.
Taylor Swift has more banners at Staples Center than the Clippers do
Anytime a Clippers fan talks shit to me, I tell them that Taylor Swift has more banners at [Crypto.com Arena] than the Clippers do.
With the Ryder Cup looming, Max is feeling confident about his spot on the team after a consistent season that saw him notch ten top-ten finishes.
It would be crazy if I didn't get a Ryder Cup pick
I've been in the getting a pick category this whole time. I felt like last week, last week solidified it. Where now I think it would be crazy if I didn't.
Vernon Davis on Singletary and the Commanders
Super Bowl champion Vernon Davis stopped by to discuss his post-football life as a professional host, actor, and even a curling enthusiast. He took a trip down memory lane to discuss playing for Mike Singletary, specifically addressing the infamous "Can't win with him" speech.
Mike Singletary's 'Can't win with him' speech was the humbling moment I needed
I needed it at that time because coming into the National Football League, being able to have some success... you develop this chip on your shoulder where you need a humbling moment. I think that was a humbling experience for me that I needed. So I'm not gonna sit there and say that [Singletary] was wrong because... it actually helped me.
Vernon also provided a reality check for fans who think they know more than the coordinators calling plays on Sundays. He explained that what looks like a bad call on TV is usually a highly specific situational decision based on the defense's look.
Fans are usually wrong when they criticize NFL play calling
A lot of times you get fans talk about play calling. Why didn't coach call this play? But they don't understand like it's all situational... It depends on what they're lining up in... certain plays that we plan for, we can't really run and practice. And then the fans... might be looking at a play totally different than the offensive coordinator.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Vernon is high on the new era in D.C. under Josh Harris and thinks his former team’s secondary is flying under the radar.
The Washington Commanders secondary will surprise everyone this season
I think the Washington Commanders secondary is gonna surprise everyone.
He didn't stop there with the predictions, though, as he's backing Lamar Jackson and the Ravens to go all the way this year.
The Ravens will win the Super Bowl this year
The team that's gonna win the Super Bowl this year will probably be Baltimore Ravens.
Mount Rushmore of Broadcast Calls
The guys finally tackled the Mount Rushmore of best broadcaster calls, a segment that put an immense amount of pressure on Jake. From "Do you believe in miracles?" to the chaotic "The band is on the field," the picks were largely iconic. However, Big Cat and PFT made sure to secure the most meme-able call in modern sports history: the Nick Castellanos home run during a somber on-air apology.
The Nick Castellanos home run apology call is one of the greatest moments in broadcasting history
It is such a hilarious funny call. Iconic call became a meme. It's like one of those things that I can't wait till my kids are older and be like, let me show you this video... and let me set the stage for you. Apologize for the what? Call of my life.
Fyre Fest
To wrap up the week, Max (the producer) shared his struggles with "long COVID" and a cheap bed frame that results in him waking up halfway across the room. The real drama, however, centers on the upcoming Barstool 5K. Big Cat has put $5,000 on the line for charity if Max can break 33 minutes, but Max is already waving the white flag.
I cannot run a 5K in under 33 minutes
I'm not gonna be able to run under 33 minutes. I'm not gonna be able to do that and I can't do that. Physically... I'm going to end up, I'm gonna get an injury.
PFT has offered to spot him a ten-minute spread, so we'll see if the prospect of a five-figure donation to the dogs can motivate Max to actually run.
It’s almost football season, so stay hydrated and keep your mattress on its frame.
