Michigan Wins The National Title, NFL Playoffs With Brian Baldinger, Coach Firings And The Weird Flyers Hockey Story

Wednesday, January 10, 202419 takes

Michigan has won the National Title and Jim Harbaugh has won his way. We talk about Monday night and all the great quotes from Harbaugh (-). We then talk about Coach firings in the NFL, Mike Vrabel out in Tennessee and more (-). Max gives us a rundown of the weird hockey story in Philly and we call Whit to weigh in (-). Hot Seat/Cool Throne (-). We then welcome on Brian Baldinger to break down the NFL Playoffs, is there a fix for the Eagles? Can the Lions Defense put it back together? Cold weather Dolphins and more (-). We finish with guys on chicks (-).

Michigan’s Natty, Mike Vrabel Fired, and Brian Baldinger's Playoff Preview

Nature is healing. The Big Ten is back on top, and our close personal friend Jim Harbaugh is finally a national champion. Michigan bullied Washington into submission on Monday night, proving that you can still win titles by running the ball 38 times and tackling everything that moves. Big Cat was fully convinced that the Wolverines' defense was just a different breed this year, stranding Michael Penix Jr. on an island and slowly strangling the life out of the Huskies.

Michigan was the best team in college football this year by a large margin

Washington fans, as much as it sucks right now, I just wanna say this, Michigan was always gonna win that game. That is what Michigan does... I really truly believe Michigan was the best team by a large margin in college football this year.

Michigan finished 15-0 and won the championship, validating their claim as the best team.

While the rest of the world is screaming about asterisks and sign-stealing, the guys are embracing the chaos. PFT pointed out that in the modern landscape of college football, the best cheater usually ends up holding the trophy, and Connor Stallions might just be the greatest American hero we have.

College football is ultimately about who is the best at cheating

I also think this proves that cheaters win, like in the, in the long term, everybody cheats. All right. This is not just Michigan. Every school, every major school in the country, they cheat in certain ways... college football is about who is the best at cheating. And Michigan was really fucking good at cheating.

The take is subjective and satirical in nature regarding the culture of college athletics.

Harbaugh has finally earned his seat at the big person’s table alongside his brother and father. Now the only question is whether JJ McCarthy joins him in the NFL or stays in Ann Arbor to defend the crown. Big Cat thinks one more year of meditation and grounding under the goalposts wouldn't hurt the kid's draft stock.

JJ McCarthy should stay at Michigan for another season instead of entering the NFL Draft

JJ McCarthy, there's some JJ McCarthy haters out there... he's not like gonna electrify you with his throws, but he is one of those guys that just makes the big plays when they have to be made... I think he probably should stay another year.

McCarthy declared for the draft and was selected 10th overall by the Vikings, suggesting he was ready for the next level.

The Mike Vrabel Shocker

Tennessee decided to move on from Mike Vrabel in a move that baffled pretty much everyone who watches football. The reporting that the Titans didn't want to deal with the "paperwork" of a trade is the most relatable NFL front office story of all time. Big Cat and PFT couldn't believe they’d let a coach of that caliber walk for nothing, especially given what he dragged out of Ryan Tannehill for years.

Firing Mike Vrabel was a stupid move by the Titans

Mike Vrabel fired by the Titans. I don't know, I think that's a really stupid move by the Titans... Mike Vrabel has had insane amounts of success with Ryan Tannehill as quarterback. Find me another coach could get the, or Ryan Tannehill to the AFC championship game.

It is an opinion on a coaching move, though Vrabel was a highly sought-after free agent coach (though he didn't land a head coaching job immediately).

With the coaching carousel spinning, the shadow of Bill Belichick looms large over New England. Hank is still in denial, but the smoke is becoming a wildfire. PFT is already looking toward a future where the hoodie isn't on the Patriots' sideline for the first time in two decades.

Bill Belichick will not be the head coach of the Patriots next season

I do not think that Belichick will be the coach in New England next year... It feels like there's so much smoke. I agree. I just, I think it would be stupid. I think you should keep 'em. But it does feel like there was so much talk about it.

The Patriots and Belichick mutually agreed to part ways on January 11, 2024, the day after this episode aired.

Brian Baldinger’s Playoff Breakdown

Our good friend Baldy joined the show to get us ready for Wild Card weekend, and he’s smelling an upset in the Motor City. While everyone is focused on the Stafford vs. Goff narrative, Baldy is looking at the trenches. He’s all-in on the Rams' young defense and their ability to run the ball with Kyron Williams, whom he thinks might be the best back Sean McVay has ever had.

Kyron Williams is the best running back Sean McVay has ever coached

Kyron Williams... I think he's the best running back McVay's had. And so, not that it's a long list or anything, but this guy is a difference maker... Stafford's underneath the center... now the running game has really taken over.

This is a subjective comparison of player performance across different eras.

The Rams' visit to Detroit has 'upset' written all over it

The Rams. The Rams coming to Detroit because... this game to me has upset written all over. And I think because of the way the Rams are playing, I mean even the way they played against San Francisco... just the way they played the game up front on the offensive line... they're crafty, but it's really effective.

The Lions defeated the Rams 24-23 in the Wild Card round.

Baldy also delivered a sobering reality check for Eagles fans. After watching the tape, he’s convinced the Philly offense has become so stagnant that guys at the local South Philly bars could probably call the plays before they happen. With Todd Bowles bringing the house this weekend, things could get ugly for Jalen Hurts.

The Eagles' offense has become very predictable and lacks answers for pressure

I feel like if I was playing defense against the Eagles, that I would just be calling their plays out. Like there's like, honestly I know guys at the bar in South Philly that are calling the same plays out. They're just very predictable... When they came after [Jalen Hurts]... they had no answer. What's your answer? What should Jalen Hertz do if they've got a free hitter coming out?

The Eagles' offensive struggles continued in the playoffs, where they were held to 9 points by the Buccaneers.

Todd Bowles and the Buccaneers' blitz packages will give the Eagles' offense major problems

That's all Todd Bowles does... that guy's drawing up pressures right now at Tampa. Like they better be ready for it because... the bull's getting the Eagles offense right now and they better be ready for it because it's coming... Jalen [Hertz] needs an out, if they're gonna come after him the way they can.

The Buccaneers beat the Eagles 32-9 in the Wild Card round, largely by harassing Jalen Hurts with blitzes as Baldinger predicted.

Chaos in Philly and the Hot Seat

Max was tasked with explaining the bizarre Cutter Gauthier trade situation involving the Flyers, which naturally led to calling Ryan Whitney to talk some trash about the city of Philadelphia. Max didn't hold back on the prospect who ghosted the front office, even if the reporting surrounding Kevin Hayes got a little messy.

Cutter Gauthier is a 'pussy' for refusing to play for the Flyers

That guy's a cutter's a pussy. That's a, that's a fact. Because... he told Philly that he wanted to play for Philly and then change his mind two months later.

This is a purely subjective insult based on sports fandom.

In Hot Seat/Cool Throne, the NBA’s officiating is under fire after a disastrous ending to the Celtics-Pacers game. Hank was predictably livid about Jalen Brown getting hit in the head with no whistle, and for once, he actually found himself agreeing with LeBron James.

NBA officiating in the Celtics-Pacers game was 'very questionable' after reversing a clear foul

Last night against the Pacers... Jalen Brown had a game tying shot attempt that they call the foul. They reviewed the tape, he clearly got hit in the head. They reversed it, gave the pacers the ball back... very questionable. Very, very questionable.

The NBA L2M report later confirmed that Buddy Hield should have been called for a foul on Jaylen Brown.

Michigan is back, the NFL is in a frenzy, and we're one week away from finding out if the Lions can finally win a playoff game.

I'm out on Boeing airplanes until the safety issues are addressed

Boeing airplanes... had an explosive decompressor at 16,000 feet... So if it's, I don't know what kind of flights we have planned soon. But if it's Boeing, I ain't going. I'm out. I'm out on Boeing anytime soon.

Safety concerns regarding Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft led to temporary groundings, justifying the concern.

Vacating a national title is the dumbest thing in sports

The vacated national title is the dumbest thing in sports. You have to take down the banner. Yeah. It's like, who cares? Every fan lived it. Every [Rick] Pitino's got a tattoo. Who cares?

Jameis Winston has a job for life at Barstool Sports if he doesn't get another NFL contract

I'll say this right now, if Jameis Winston doesn't get another job in the NFL, he has a job for life at Barstool. I don't know how we're gonna financially make that work, but I'm gonna say it right now. Just to be a dude. Hang out. Just be a vibes guy.

Winston stayed in the NFL by signing with the Browns, so the job offer condition was not triggered.

The Flyers were right to trade Cutter Gauthier after he refused to meet with the front office

The team of the Flyers are in the right for trading him. He told Philly that he wanted to play for Philly and then change his mind two months later... He ghosted every phone call... The front office of the Flyers flew to Sweden to meet with him... He refused to meet with them.

This is a subjective assessment of a team's front office decision.

The Packers have a better chance of upsetting the Cowboys than the Steelers have of upsetting the Bills

I would say the Packers [have a better chance], because Aaron Jones right now... that guy's an unbelievable player... Green Bay has a better chance [of an upset]. [Jordan Love] threw a couple plays last week in Chicago... classic Aaron Rogers.

The Packers upset the Cowboys 48-32, while the Steelers lost 31-17 to the Bills.

San Francisco and Baltimore are the two best teams and will meet in the Super Bowl

I'll give you just chalk San Francisco, Baltimore, because I think they've been the two best teams all year. So that's how I'm thinking.

While the 49ers won the NFC, the Ravens lost the AFC Championship game to the Chiefs.

Jim Harbaugh is definitely leaving Michigan for the NFL to win a Super Bowl

Oh, he is gone. He's gone. He's going to win a Super Bowl championship. It's already, like, his mind's already, like they might celebrate today and have some fun in Ann Arbor. They should, but I think he's on his way to the NFL.

Jim Harbaugh left Michigan to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers on January 24, 2024.
