The NCAA has a scandal and Rick Pitino may or may not be involved ( - ). We call the FBI hotline for NCAA violations to report a College Basketball crime we suspect is occurring at a certain prominent basically school that may or may not rhyme with Puke ( - ). Hot Seat/Cool Throne ( - ). NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter joins us to talk about his new show First Things First, Randy Moss, what does elite really mean, and his conversation with Colin Kaepernick ( - ). Segments include Hurt or Injured for Darren Sproles. Sabermetrics for Michael Beasley using too much of his brain, uhh ya think for D-Wade on the Cavs and Guys on Chicks.

Cris Carter on Randy Moss, QB Tiers, and the NCAA Scandal

The sports world is currently melting down thanks to the FBI's investigation into NCAA basketball, and Big Cat and PFT Commenter are here to help the feds finish the job. With Rick Pitino essentially out at Louisville, the guys decided to call the official NCAA corruption hotline to point the investigators toward a different legendary coach in North Carolina. Big Cat hasn't forgotten the 2015 National Championship, and he’s ready to provide the evidence.

Coach K cheated in the 2015 National Championship game by pressuring referees at halftime

In the 2015 National Championship game against Wisconsin, Wisconsin was dominating the game, and at halftime, Coach K went and talked to the refs, and they called 13 fouls against Wisconsin in the second half, even though they averaged 12 fouls a game, so he obviously was cheating.

While the foul disparity is a recorded stat, 'cheating' is a subjective interpretation of a coach working the officials.

PFT has his own theories on how the FBI has been getting so much inside information on these programs. It turns out one of the most successful coaches in the game might actually be a fed.

John Calipari has actually been an undercover FBI agent his entire career

I think maybe [John] Calipari has just been an FBI agent his entire life. I think he just gets in, finds out all the dirty deeds going on at these various campuses... He is Donnie Brasco, and so he just drags down his opponents.

Purely satirical and conspiratorial; there is no evidence Calipari is an FBI agent.

They also touched on the shoe company angle, noting that while Adidas is in the line of fire, one brand stands tall as the last bastion of integrity in the basketball world.

Big Baller Brand will corner the market because they're the only shoe company not implicated in the bribery scandal

Big Baller Brand, by being the only shoe company that's not implicated, could have just cornered the market.

Big Baller Brand failed for many reasons, but not because of the FBI investigation. They did not corner the market.

Hall of Famer Cris Carter

NFL legend Cris Carter joined the show to discuss his new gig at FS1 and his storied career. While he’s known as "Touchdown Hands," Big Cat and PFT immediately put that to the test by throwing a football at him mid-interview. Carter didn't flinch, maintaining that he’s still the gold standard for pass-catching.

I would take a catch challenge against any mortal because my hands are still elite

My hands are still very, very good. I'm willing to get in any type of catch challenge with any mortal.

This is unverified as no challenge took place, but Carter is a Hall of Famer for a reason.

Carter was incredibly open about his time in Minnesota, specifically the dynamic when Randy Moss arrived. While Carter is a Hall of Famer in his own right, he was the first to admit that Moss was operating on a different level of pure talent.

Randy Moss is the most talented wide receiver that has ever played the game

I knew he was probably the most talented wide receiver that's ever played the game. Because he was that rare. But all the other things in his football brain is what knew that, man, this kid is really, really special.

Moss is widely considered the most talented, if not the most productive (Rice).

The conversation shifted to the current state of the NFL, specifically why the product seems a bit sloppy during the first month of the season. Carter pointed the finger directly at the latest collective bargaining agreement for ruining the quality of play.

The NFL product suffers in September because the CBA limits padded practices

When they changed the collective bargain agreement... the player's like, okay, we want to practice less. All right, we'll grant you that. It's affected the product, all right? Because you can't have the few number of padded practices and train people how to play in the NFL. It's not going to work, so the product will suffer the first month of the season.

This is a recurring complaint from old-school players and analysts, but it correlates with the data of high turnover and penalty rates in early September.

He also gave a fascinating breakdown of how he views the quarterback position, particularly the "elite" status of guys like Joe Flacco and the current unemployment of Colin Kaepernick. Carter isn't ready to call Flacco a consistent superstar, but he respects the hardware.

Joe Flacco isn't consistently elite, but has 'elite moments' where he raises his team to that level

Is he [Joe Flacco] elite? I think he's right on the edge of it... In the pressure moments, can a guy rise up and elevate his team to the elite level? Joe Flacco not elite anymore but has elite moments and raise his team to an elite level.

The Flacco eliteness debate is subjective, but Carter's specific claim about Flacco having 'elite moments' (like his 2012 playoff run) is a standard football evaluation.

Regarding Kaepernick, Carter shared insights from their private conversations, suggesting that the media's portrayal of the situation often misses the mark on Kaepernick’s actual personality.

Colin Kaepernick doesn't have the personality to effectively verbalize his cause

I just don't think he has the personality. I think that it's very, very rare that you see someone take such a prominent position on something that's really profound and not really necessarily have the personality that would allow them to be able to verbalize it... when you can't communicate with the general public of what your cause is and your reasoning, it's not going to endear people to what you're trying to say.

Kaepernick remained largely silent for years, which some argued hurt his public perception, while others argued it kept the focus on the issues.

Hot Seat/Cool Throne

Bruce Arians landed on the Hot Seat for a baffling challenge on Monday Night Football that looked more like a man losing his grip on reality than a strategic football move. Big Cat is worried the Cardinals head coach might be officially out of marbles.

Bruce Arians is on the hot seat because he is losing his mind and making terrible challenges

Bruce Arians is officially actually on the hot seat because I don't think he has all his marbles... That challenge though, everyone was saying how bad it was, but it we correctly identified it as the football guy who gets so frustrated he just challenges a random play he knows he's gonna lose.

Arians retired at the end of the 2017 season (initially), so he was technically on his way out, though he later won a Super Bowl with Tampa.

Meanwhile, the guys discussed the news that Twitter is testing a 280-character limit. It’s a dark day for people who hate reading, and Big Cat is convinced this is the end of the platform as we know it.

Big CatBig Cat

Twitter's 280-character limit will ruin threads and make the app unbearable

Twitter has announced that the app that everyone loves and can't make any money has announced they're going to make everyone read more. So 280 characters... I might not be able to be on Twitter anymore. That's so much reading. They just doubled their product. And they just ruined threads.

Twitter successfully moved to 280 characters and it became the standard. Whether it 'ruined' the app is subjective, but Big Cat definitely stayed on the app.

PFT also looked at the NFL's rating dip and proposed a theory involving the Kardashian family's lack of involvement with the league's current stars.

NFL ratings are down because players aren't sleeping with Kardashians anymore

Do you think that's why NBA ratings are up and NFL is down because none of the NFL players are sleeping with the Kardashians?

Hot TakeMediaMediumSarcastic
Ratings fluctuations are due to complex factors like streaming, cord-cutting, and political protests, not Kardashian dating habits.

Michael Beasley's 12% Brain

In a legendary edition of Sabermetrics, the guys broke down Michael Beasley’s recent comments about only using 10% of the human brain. Beasley suggested that the guy who discovered that rule must have been using 11%, which naturally puts Beasley himself in the 12% range. Big Cat is officially keeping a close eye on Beasley for being too aware of the matrix.

Michael Beasley knows too much and is officially 'too woke'

Michael Beasley, I'm following him officially in the category of knows too much... We finally figured out 12% is the point where you reach too woke.

Beasley's comments were widely mocked as pseudoscience. Big Cat is leaning into the comedy of it.

To wrap up, the guys looked at the NBA's newest superteam in Cleveland as Dwyane Wade reunites with LeBron James. PFT is already preparing for the inevitable physical toll that practices will take on the Cavs' aging roster.

Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade will turn into a pile of dust if they collide in practice

I would say, man, I'm really looking forward to those practices where Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade just, like, accidentally run into each other and turn into a pile of dust.

Hot TakeBasketballMediumSarcastic
Rose and Wade did struggle with various issues and the Cavs experiment with that roster was short-lived.

If PFT doesn't show up on Friday, he's probably at the hospital having his appendix removed by a doctor using 13% of his brain.

AAU coaches are the real victims in the NCAA scandal because players force them to profit off their likeness

The players are the ones who are victimizing the AAU coaches by putting them in a position to profit off of the players.

The NCAA rules eventually changed to allow NIL, effectively admitting the system was broken, but legally players were never 'victimizing' coaches.

Warren Moon is the best quarterback I ever played with and it's not even close

Warren Moon. It's not even close. Really? Warren Moon. We played two seasons together. I had 244 catches and 24 touchdowns in only two years.

This is Carter's personal opinion based on his own production with those QBs.

Randy Moss will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer

I think he is [a first ballot Hall of Famer]. Yeah. He has the numbers. He had the type of impact on football that would warrant him going into the Hall of First Ballot.

Randy Moss was indeed elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first ballot in 2018.

The quarterback is the most valuable player on the field, followed by the left tackle or defensive end

The quarterback [is most valuable]... [Second most is] the left tackle or a defensive end... [Third is] either a corner or another defensive end.

Positional value is inherently subjective but this aligns with most NFL front office strategies of the era.

Colin Kaepernick is a starting-level upgrade for 4 to 5 NFL teams right now

How many teams in the league right now do you think he would be an upgrade for at the starting quarterback position? Well, you can go through them. At least four or five. I mean, you don't have to leave New York. I mean, Josh McCown. I mean, my goodness.

Statistically, McCown and others were comparable to Kaepernick's final year, but Kaepernick never played in the NFL again to prove he was an 'upgrade'.

Out of your crew, have one guy that's got some common sense... you need a tech guy. You need a driver. One guy to do the troll accounts. Social media.

Dwyane Wade signing with the Cavs was a case of the Bulls overpaying a player just to sell jerseys

The Dwyane Wade Bulls contract was one of the worst contracts ever... it was one of those contracts that was like, everyone said this is stupid. The Bulls probably knew it was stupid... It's the old Jerry Reinsdorf, got to sell some jerseys, not actually win some games.

Wade's tenure in Chicago was widely considered a failure on the court, though he was still a major draw.
