NFL Preview With Field Yates, College Football Is Back, Deion Sanders Has Receipts And Who's Back Of The Week

Tuesday, September 5, 202319 takes

Football is back. Deion Sanders is keeping receipts and he has the Dawgs to do it. We talk about the full weekend of football, Brian Kelly losing, who was the horniest head coach, Iowa offense being back for a second and more (-). Who's back of the week including diarrhea on a plane, the Waterdogs going to the semi's and more (-). Field Yates joins the show to preview the upcoming NFL season, what teams he thinks are undervalued, fantasy sleepers, whats the next wrinkle in the league and more (-). We finish welcoming Max back from vacation and a goodbye to Mt Rushmore season (-).

Field Yates and College Football's Return: Deion, Prime, and NFL Predictions

Football is officially back, and we finally have real games to overreact to. Big Cat and PFT opened the show by bending the knee to Prime Time after Colorado shocked the world against TCU. Deion Sanders is basically the Tree of Life for takes right now, providing enough fuel to keep the sports media ecosystem running for a decade. While the journalists are busy getting physically ill over Deion calling out receipts, Big Cat is busy checking the "Back Meter" for the entire country.

Colorado is officially 'more back' than Nebraska

A team that had no hope and was like in utter despair has beaten Nebraska to the back meter and, and maybe Nebraska can win on Saturday and that they get more back. But right now Colorado is more back than Nebraska.

This is subjective, but Colorado's subsequent 4-8 season vs Nebraska's 5-7 season suggests neither was fully 'back', though Colorado certainly owned the national spotlight early.

PFT is already looking ahead to the next massive shift in the hierarchy of being "back," and he's leaning toward the Big 12.

If Texas beats Alabama, they will be officially 'more back' than Colorado

Now if Texas wins on Saturday, [Texas] is more back than Colorado I think. Texas and Tuscaloosa for sure. Yeah, absolutely. We're on back watch right now.

Texas defeated Alabama on the road and had a dominant season resulting in a CFP berth, while Colorado's season plateaued after a hot start.

The guys also touched on the sheer unlikability of Brian Kelly after LSU's second-half collapse against Florida State. It’s hard to feel bad for a guy who fakes an accent and then blames everyone but himself when things go south.

Brian Kelly is the most unlikable coach in college football

In terms of football coaches though, [Brian Kelly] is probably the most least likable football coach in college football right now. So when you lose, I can't feel bad 'cause I just, Brian Kelly's so unlikable as a person.

This is a purely subjective opinion about a coach's likability.

Max made his triumphant return from a 13-day vacation just in time to defend Penn State. He wasn't just happy to be back; he was ready to crown a new king in Happy Valley after watching Drew Allar's debut.

Drew Allar is the best Penn State quarterback I have seen in my lifetime

Best, best quarterback Penn State quarterback I think I've seen in my lifetime. [Drew Allar] better [than Christian Hackenberg].

Allar had a solid 2023 but struggled against top-tier opponents (Michigan, Ohio State), leading to questions about whether he lived up to this 'best ever' billing so soon.

Friend of the program Field Yates joined the show in person to give a massive NFL preview. Field, who famously worked for the Chiefs and Patriots before becoming a fantasy guru, broke down his playoff picks for the loaded AFC. He’s all-in on the AFC East being the powerhouse of the conference.

The Bills, Bengals, Jaguars, Chiefs, Jets, Dolphins, and Ravens will make the AFC playoffs

Division winners: Bills big time all the way in, Bengals, Jaguars, Chiefs... And then Jets, Dolphins, Ravens. So three teams from the AFC East.

He went 4 for 7 on this list; the Bills, Chiefs, Dolphins, and Ravens made the playoffs, while the Bengals, Jaguars, and Jets missed.

However, Field had some bad news for the Yinzers. Despite Mike Tomlin’s legendary streak of non-losing seasons, Field thinks the math finally catches up to Pittsburgh in a division where every other team improved.

The Steelers' consecutive non-losing seasons streak ends this year

I think this streak comes to an end this year... Someone has to be last in that division, right? And I think that's the Steelers, not the Browns.

The Steelers finished the 2023 season with a 10-7 record, extending Mike Tomlin's streak of non-losing seasons to 17. The prediction was incorrect.

When the conversation shifted to the Cowboys, Big Cat couldn't help but do his duty as a hater, despite Field’s attempts to be objective about Dak Prescott’s future. Big Cat is convinced the star on the helmet is doing a lot of heavy lifting for Dak’s reputation.

Dak Prescott sucks

He sucks. He sucks. He sucks. Prescott sucks. He's a byproduct of the star in his helmet. He sucks.

OpinionFootballHotSarcastic
Dak Prescott had one of the best seasons of his career in 2023, leading the league in passing touchdowns and finishing as an All-Pro. He definitely did not 'suck'.

Field, ever the professional, stood his ground on why Dak is still the guy in Dallas. He sees a massive payday coming and a return to form for the Cowboys' signal-caller.

Dak Prescott will have a bounce-back season and sign a $50M+ extension

I am a Dak guy. At some point I expect Dak to sign a pretty unbelievable extension. Like probably $50 million or more per year. And I'm right to quote, 'this will be a bounce back Dak season.'

Dak Prescott finished 2nd in MVP voting in 2023 with 36 TDs and 9 INTs, a massive bounce back. In September 2024, he signed a 4-year, $240M extension ($60M/yr), exceeding Field's $50M estimate.

Before letting him go, Field gave us the goods on fantasy sleepers and rookie expectations. He’s specifically looking at the dual-threat capability of the new class of quarterbacks to provide a safe floor for fantasy managers.

C.J. Stroud will be a better fantasy quarterback than Bryce Young because of his rushing floor

I'm a Stroud boy for Fantasy. Because in Fantasy football, you gotta remember how valuable running quarterbacks are. They set this unbelievable floor... Why take that away from an offense?

Stroud finished as a top-12 fantasy quarterback (QB11) while Bryce Young struggled to stay in the top 25 (QB23).

He also thinks the Lions have a potential superstar on their hands if they use their first-round pick correctly, comparing Jahmyr Gibbs to a certain Saints legend.

Jahmyr Gibbs will be Alvin Kamara 2.0

I think [Jahmyr Gibbs] is either going to be like, holy crap, why did the Lions use a 12th overall pick on a guy and then not use him that much, or he is going to be Alvin Kamara 2.0. Like, Kamara as a rookie had 13 touchdowns, 81 catches... I feel like Jahmyr Gibbs is going to be like that.

Gibbs had a sensational rookie year with 1,261 scrimmage yards and 11 touchdowns, providing the exact Kamara-esque impact Field predicted.

Who's Back of the Week featured the absolute horror show of a Delta flight turned around due to "biohazard" diarrhea and the Waterdogs heading to the semifinals. We finished the show with a farewell to Mount Rushmore season and a moment of silence for the legend Jimmy Buffett.

It’s time to get in football shape because we only have one show left before the NFL kicks off for real.

Colorado will beat Nebraska by 30 points next week

I'm on your side. You're going to win by 30 against Nebraska.

Colorado beat Nebraska 36-14 on Sept 9, 2023. This was a 22-point win, which is dominant but short of the 30-point prediction.

Vic Fangio is a walking top 10 defense

Vic Fangio is there and it's like, damn. He's so good. He's a walking top 10 defense.

The Dolphins' defense finished 10th in total yards allowed, satisfying the literal 'top 10' claim, though they were 22nd in points allowed.

The Eagles, Packers, Chiefs, Cowboys, and Lions have the top five offensive lines in the NFL

Eagles number one. I will go with Packers, Chiefs, Cowboys. And Lions. Browns would be another one that I would consider.

Post-season analysis from PFF and other metrics confirmed these five units were indeed the premier offensive lines for the 2023 season.

The Eagles, Vikings, Saints, 49ers, Seahawks, Cowboys, and Lions will make the NFC playoffs

Division winners: Eagles, NFC North... I took the Vikings previously... Eagles, Vikings, Saints. And then 49ers. Seahawks make it back this year. Cowboys, Lions for the seventh.

He went 4 for 7 on this list; the Eagles, 49ers, Cowboys, and Lions made the playoffs, while the Vikings, Saints, and Seahawks missed.

Sam Howell is a better quarterback prospect than Brock Purdy

Redraft Sam Howell right now... Sam Howell would be two [among the 2022 class behind Pickett]... It's a Brock Purdy Sam Howell conversation. I don't want to take away from a kid [Purdy] who helped [the 49ers] win a ton of games last year, but that is as brilliant of a coaching system as there is right now.

Purdy led the 49ers to a Super Bowl and was an MVP finalist, while Howell was eventually benched by the Commanders and traded.

The NFL is due for a 'tight end tax' to correct the market for elite players like Travis Kelce

Travis Kelce would be like the 27th highest paid wide receiver if you just made him a wide receiver right now. It's absurd. We're due for like a little bit of a tight end tax because there are guys like Brock Bowers from Georgia this year is gonna be a problem. There's some legit college prospects that give me some hope that the tight end spot can get closer in line.

Whether the NFL market has seen a 'tight end tax' correction is a subjective market analysis. Tight end contracts have increased but the concept of a broad market correction is debatable.

Geno Smith is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL at ball placement

I'm more in than out [on Geno Smith]... accuracy is quantifiable in the sense of completion percentage, but I think there's also like a different side to it. And like Geno, his ball placement is like some of the very best in the NFL. He was absurd last year.

This is a trait-based evaluation that remains somewhat subjective, though Geno did maintain high completion and accuracy rankings.

Jordan Addison and Zay Flowers are going too late in fantasy drafts

Jordan Addison... he's a first round pick, but he's going like way too late in drafts right now. Zay Flowers from the Ravens as well.

Both receivers had productive rookie years. Addison had 10 TDs and 911 yards; Flowers had 858 yards and 5 TDs. Both outperformed their late-round ADPs.

Ty Chandler or Roschon Johnson could steal starting running back roles this year

You have to find the running back room that you're not totally positive that the starter is gonna keep his job for the full season. There's like the non-zero chance that Ty Chandler... eventually becomes the starter. Roschon Johnson for the Bears, right? Would you be totally surprised if Roschon like had a real role at some point?

Ty Chandler did eventually supplant Alexander Mattison as the primary back in Minnesota late in the season. Roschon Johnson earned a significant role but was part of a committee in Chicago.
