NFL Week 15: Bills' Epic Comeback, Chiefs Eliminated, and the Return of Philip Rivers
Week 15 was absolutely legendary, even if it felt like the NFL was being played in a giant ice box. We had massive comebacks, a playoff field that is finally shaking out the pretenders, and some of the most devastating injury news we've seen in years. Between the Fastest Two Minutes and the late-night sweat of Cowboys-Vikings, Big Cat, PFT, and the crew broke down a Sunday that changed the entire trajectory of the season.
The Bills Don't Blink in Foxboro
Hank was on the scene in snowy New England for what looked like a coronation of the Patriots' new era. Drake Maye came out firing, and at 21-0, it looked like the Bills were ready to hibernate. Then Josh Allen remembered he’s Josh Allen. Five straight touchdown drives later, the Bills reminded everyone that as long as they have 17, they are never out of it. PFT made it clear that while the Bills have flaws, Allen is the ultimate eraser.
The Bills would be a bad team without Josh Allen
I feel like Josh Allen, he should be definitely in the MVP consideration. If you took Josh Allen off the Bills and replaced him with any other quarterback, they're a bad team. And with Josh Allen, they're going to compete for the division title.
While the offense gets the headlines, Big Cat pointed out that the Buffalo defense has a knack for showing up exactly when the game is on the line, despite their statistical struggles.
The Bills defense is their Achilles heel but steps up in major moments
The Bills defense is their Achilles heel. But if you look at what the bills have done in some of these big time games... they have also stepped up in big time moments to make big time plays and win games. Because their offense is not the problem.
Hank, ever the optimist in defeat, is refusing to let the loss dampen his spirits about the future of the Patriots' rookie quarterback. Despite the setback, the "Torch" isn't moving just yet.
Drake Maye still holds the metaphorical 'Torch' of the AFC East
[Drake Maye] still have the torch. Yeah. The torch is ours. Whoever wins the division [is the] current torch bearer.
The End of an Era in Kansas City
For the first time in the history of this podcast, the Kansas City Chiefs have been eliminated from the playoffs. It’s a staggering stat that finally came to fruition after a rock fight with the Chargers. The mood turned somber, however, with the news that Patrick Mahomes likely suffered a torn ACL. It feels like the end of a specific chapter in NFL history, especially regarding the Mahomes-Kelce connection.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have likely played their last game together as teammates
That was probably the last time Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce play on the same football field. I feel really bad for Patrick Mahomes because that sucks to have an [ACL] injury like that and have to rehab for the entire off-season after what was already kind of a season from hell.
On the other side, Jim Harbaugh has transformed the Chargers into a team that simply refuses to lose ugly games. PFT is officially labeling them the most resilient group in the league.
The Chargers are currently the top 'ball team' in the NFL
I loved what Harbaugh said after the game. He goes, it's a ball team.... I think the Chargers gotta be the number one ball team. There's a difference between a great team and a ball team. There's just a pure—
The Iceman Cometh and the Raiders' Rock Bottom
Caleb Williams looked right at home in the freezing Chicago air, dismantling the Browns and proving that the Bears are a legitimate threat in the NFC. Big Cat was buzzing about the efficiency of the offense and how his rookie QB didn't let the elements affect his game.
Caleb Williams has proven he is a successful cold-weather quarterback
What I liked about it proved that Caleb can play in the cold. ... No, he looked so comfortable and, and it was awesome to see. He's cold weather quarterback.
While the Bears are ascending, the Raiders have hit a level of futility that is almost impressive. After a 31-0 drubbing by the Eagles, Big Cat and PFT agreed that there is no longer a debate about who sits at the bottom of the NFL power rankings.
The Raiders are the worst team in the NFL
The Raiders are the worst team in the league. I agree. I know. I do not think that there's a debate for it. They're one of the worst teams like ever. It's crazy watching 'em play.
Philip Rivers and the Best Bad Game Ever
We finally got what we’ve been waiting for: Grandpa Phil back on an NFL field. Philip Rivers suited up for the Colts and it was exactly as nostalgic as you’d hope. He was barking at defenders, doing the patented kick after touchdowns, and throwing ducks that somehow found their way into receivers' hands. Even though he threw a pick to end the game, PFT isn't letting the stat sheet ruin the vibes.
Philip Rivers' game-ending interception against the Seahawks should not be counted against his performance
When Phil [Rivers] got the ball back at the end of the game, they had to try to throw the ball downfield. I'm not counting that as an interception against Philip Rivers' name. It was not. I'm not gonna do it.
Bo Nix and the Mile High Standard
Sean Payton has the Broncos humming, and Bo Nix just put together his best professional performance against the Packers. With the one seed currently sitting in Denver, Big Cat is starting to realize that the AFC might have to travel through the altitude in January.
Bo Nix and the Broncos are the best team in football when Nix is playing well
I think they're the best team in football with Good Bo. Yeah. With the way Bo Nix is playing right now. If this Bo Nix shows up in the playoffs, everyone is in trouble.
Who's Back and Heisman Hype
To wrap up the show, the guys looked at the college landscape where Fernando Mendoza took home the Heisman. Big Cat is officially a believer in the Indiana signal-caller as a future Sunday starter.
Fernando Mendoza is a legitimate NFL quarterback prospect
I'm buying stock in Fernando Mendoza as a pro. ... I think he's got it. The way he nerds out about football... reading defenses. We're gonna lose Philip Rivers, but we're gonna gain a Mendoza.
Meanwhile, PFT took a second to look at the NBA Cup and the terrifying reality of trying to play against Victor Wembanyama.
Victor Wembanyama is an unsolvable problem because you cannot design a system to stop him
Wemby is a problem. You can't design a system to keep the ball away from Wemby. You can't design a system to effectively attack the paint when Wemby's standing there. He's so, so fun to watch.
Don't let the Bengals into the playoffs (we won't).
