Paul Bissonnette on the SCF, US Open Recap, and NBA Finals Drama
A massive sports weekend is in the books, and it was pure carnage at Oakmont. JJ Spaun survived a rain delay and a miserable start to claim the US Open trophy after everybody else on the leaderboard spent the afternoon leaking oil. The course fought back with a vengeance, but Spaun found a way to reset after looking completely deader than dead on the front nine.
Hank, our resident golf expert, naturally spent most of the tournament's climax in a deep Father’s Day nap on the office couch. While Hank was dreaming of fairways, PFT was watching Rory McIlroy essentially admit that he’s already mentally checked out until the tour returns to the UK. It’s a bold strategy to admit you climbed your Everest in April and don't care about anything else.
Rory McIlroy only cares about winning tournaments in the UK now
It seemed like he didn't care about this tournament. He's like, once you win the Masters, it's like, that was the big hurdle... I only care about tournaments that take place in the UK now.
SGA Takes Over and the KD Legacy Games
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander officially put the league on notice in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Down the stretch, SGA decided he was simply the best player on the floor, carrying the Thunder to a comeback win that has the Pacers reeling. Big Cat was blown away by the way OKC can just flip a switch when they need to choke the life out of an opponent.
The Thunder have a 'defensive intensity button' they turn on to shut teams down
The crazy part about the Thunder. I feel like they just hit, they turn up the button where it's like, Hey Lou Dort now... the way they can turn up that defensive intensity, they completely shut down the Pacers in the fourth quarter.
SGA has officially proven he is the best player in the NBA Finals
[SGA] basically was like, I have to win this series myself. And he did it in that fourth quarter... This is why he won the MVP. This is why he's the best player in this series.
Hank is already sounding the funeral march for Indiana. After they let a massive lead slip away at home, he thinks the Thunder are about to step on their throats and end this thing quickly.
The Pacers-Thunder series is officially over for Indiana
I'm pretty sure... that was their game to lose. And they did. And now I feel like the series is over. Like, yeah, the Pacers have been winning the series and it's tied and... the Thunder know they're the better team and they can just step on their throat.
With the NBA offseason looming, Kevin Durant is already listing his preferred destinations, including the Rockets, Heat, and Spurs. The guys debated what another move does for the Slim Reaper’s standing in history. PFT thinks the pressure is officially on for KD to win a ring at his next stop, while Big Cat is worried about the potential "legacy suicide" of joining forces with LeBron and Luka in Los Angeles.
Winning a title with the Lakers, Luka, and LeBron would actually hurt Kevin Durant's legacy
If he went to the Lakers and they won... with Luka and LeBron, it actually would take his legacy down more.
Kevin Durant's legacy will be dinged if he doesn't win a title with his next team
I'm gonna say it. He needs to win a championship with whatever team he goes to in this trade... because he's cherry-picking the teams. If he doesn't do it, then his legacy in my eyes takes a ding.
Red Sox Heartbreak and Who’s Back
In a move that absolutely broke Hank, the Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the Giants. It’s the latest in a string of moves that has the Boston faithful wondering if ownership even likes baseball anymore. Hank is officially done with the John Henry era, comparing it to the Mookie Betts disaster and calling it a purely selfish financial move.
Red Sox ownership does not care about the fans or winning after the Devers trade
I've been out of the Red Sox ownership since they got rid of Mookie Betts... they don't care about the fans. They don't care about winning. Like they know the Red Sox ownership is selfish and they don't care about winning because they know that fans are gonna show up either way.
Big Cat sees the same writing on the wall for the Cubs. If they don't lock up their own stars, it’s a signal to the fans that the "winning" part of the business model is optional.
If the Cubs don't sign Kyle Tucker, it means ownership will never commit to winning
The Kyle Tucker impending free agency is gonna be very similar... there is no better time to commit to a guy like Kyle Tucker then right this second. So if they don't do it this time, they're basically saying they'll never do it.
Who’s Back featured a deep dive into MLB’s newest conspiracy: the return of the dead ball. PFT is convinced that Rob Manfred is personally overseeing a project to raise the seams and rob us of the dingers we deserve.
MLB is intentionally stealing home runs by making baseball seams higher
Rob Man-fraud is back. They're trying to steal dingers from you... the seams on the baseballs this year are higher than they have been in the past and it's stealing dingers away from everybody.
Zac also dropped a bombshell on the current state of barbershops. Apparently, we are living in the era of "Featured Barbers" and $80 haircuts booked via app three months in advance.
The era of the 'Featured Barber' and high-priced haircuts is officially here
The barbers are up... you pull up, they only do the app appointments... they're like 60 to 80 dollars... then there's guys down a little bit further down the street doing featured spots... book your appointment now.
Paul Bissonnette and Smylie Kaufman
Paul Bissonnette joined the show to breakdown the Stanley Cup Final. Biz is all-in on the Panthers’ depth and grit, specifically calling out Brad Marchand for playing at a Hall of Fame level at 37 years old. Between analyzing the series and discussing his battle with gout, Biz gave a glowing review of the Florida organization’s military-style discipline.
The Florida Panthers are the 'David Goggins' of the business world
He [Vinny Viola] went to West Point. They're like the, they're like the David Goggins of the business world. They're fucking up at 6:00 AM... they're machines, these guys.
Brad Marchand is a lock for the Hall of Fame
That's why I believe he's a hall of famer is because he was one of the best clutch wingers in the game for a significant almost a decade... Brad Marchand [is] the leader in Stanley Cup finals goals [among active players].
Biz isn't giving the Oilers much of a chance to pull off the miracle. He thinks Florida's depth and home-ice advantage will be too much for McDavid and Draisaitl to overcome alone.
The Florida Panthers will win the Stanley Cup in 6 games
I personally believe... that Florida's gonna close out at home in six games... they're gonna close this fucker out at home. And unfortunately for McDavid and Draisaitl, they just don't have a good enough overall team.
Smylie Kaufman called in live from Oakmont to provide the boots-on-the-ground perspective of the US Open carnage. He agreed with Big Cat that the rain delay saved JJ Spaun’s tournament. Smylie also looked ahead to the Open Championship, putting his money on a certain hot-tempered Englishman to conquer the links.
Terrell Hatton will win the Open Championship at Port Rush
Heading into the year, my prediction was Hatton. I just had a feeling that Terrell Hatton's gonna win a major this year... I'm gonna go with the crazy man in Terrell Hatton. He's a linky type of player... That's my pick for now.
JJ Spaun never wins the US Open without the weather delay
I think without that [rain delay] he never wins this. I mean he just was lost. The composure wasn't there... Five out of his first six holes were bogies... Hayward was at Oakmont Country Club talking to JJ Spawn at the reset.
If you see a robot dog dancing on your TV, just remember they’re only doing that to lower our guard before the inevitable uprising begins.
