UFC Legend Georges St-Pierre on Legacy, Bullying, and Week 16 Picks
The shortest day of the year brought some massive energy to the studio as Big Cat and PFT looked ahead to a pivotal Week 16. Between the shocking news of Josh Gordon’s suspension and Bob Wylie’s unfortunate ankle fracture, the NFL landscape is shifting just in time for the playoffs. Before getting into the heavy hitting, the guys took a lap on college basketball, specifically the absolute wagon that is the Duke Blue Devils. After watching them dismantle Texas Tech at Madison Square Garden, Big Cat is ready to call the season early.
No one's going to beat Duke this year
Duke is still undefeated and they win against Texas Tech at Madison Square Garden. No one's going to beat Duke this year.
While Duke looks unstoppable, the actual experience of watching college hoops continues to be hampered by the officiating. PFT and Big Cat shared their mutual hatred for the current foul structure, specifically how it robs fans of seeing the best players on the floor when it matters most.
College basketball's five-foul rule is bullshit
He's saying the five fouls are bullshit. Well, guess what? It is. Fix it. Yeah, it is bullshit. It makes the game way less enjoyable to see a star player get subbed out in the first half after like 10 minutes.
The Patriots Spin Zone
With Josh Gordon taking a leave of absence from the Patriots, the NFL world is questioning if New England has enough weapons left for a deep run. While most analysts see this as a crushing blow to Tom Brady’s arsenal, Hank managed to find a way to turn it into a positive. In what might be his most impressive display of mental gymnastics to date, Hank argued that having less talent actually makes the team more dangerous.
Losing Josh Gordon makes the Patriots focus more and gives them a playoff advantage
Luckily, they— Everyone's saying that [they're done]. So it's basically they just have to dig deep, worry about coaching, and worry about fundamentals, which is where they have the advantage over every other team. And so losing Josh Gordon and knowing that Gronk might not be healthy, it's like, all right, everyone has to focus extra and then execute in the playoffs.
Week 16 Preview and Picks
Moving into the NFL slate, Big Cat is looking at the Dallas Cowboys as his "Are we sure they're good?" team of the week. After getting shut out by the Colts, the Cowboys have a chance to prove they belong in the elite conversation against Jameis Winston and the Bucs. Big Cat isn't looking for a close win; he’s looking for a statement.
If the Cowboys are a legitimate NFC contender, they will beat the Bucs by 20+ points
If the Cowboys are a legitimate NFC contender, they beat the Bucs in this game by 20 plus. They bury Jameis Winston. They do not let him off the mat.
When it comes to the AFC, the Texans are the team to watch. Despite some recent stumbles, the path to Atlanta seems to go through a first-round bye for Houston. Big Cat is high on Deshaun Watson’s squad, provided they can secure that week of rest.
If the Texans get a first-round bye, they will go to the Super Bowl
I firmly believe that if the Texans get a bye, they will probably go to the Super Bowl. If they don't, no.
As for the game of the week in New Orleans, PFT and Big Cat are split on the Steelers’ chances. Big Cat is fully prepared to see the Saints return to their dominant form at home, bulletin board material be damned.
The Saints will 'kill' the Steelers
I think the Saints are going to kill the Steelers. The Saints, there's a lot of talk... oh, maybe not so good. They're not looking as great the last few weeks. They're at home. They're going to kill the Steelers.
Georges St-Pierre: The Goat
UFC legend Georges St-Pierre joined the show for a fascinating conversation that went way beyond his dominance in the Octagon. GSP discussed his future in the sport and what actually motivates a man who has already achieved everything. While fans constantly clamor for a superfight with Conor McGregor, GSP explained that his criteria for returning to the cage are much more personal than a paycheck.
A McGregor fight is for money, but I fight for legacy
Conor is the best for money fight... If you fight Conor, it's for money fight. I have money. I'm not really interested by money. It's more legacy. When I fight someone, it's because I want to have what he has.
He also broke down the psychology of being a champion, noting that the hunter has it much easier than the prey. According to GSP, the challenger has years to "download the data" of a champion, while the title holder only gets a few months to study their next opponent.
It is harder to stay champion than to become champion
It's hard to be champion, but it's much harder to stay champion. Because when you're a champion, you're up there. Everybody's been studying your game for a long, long time. You only see that guy, you study that guy for maybe a few months. But him, he's been watching you for many years. So he had a lot more time to download your data than you did.
Perhaps the most compelling part of the interview was GSP’s analysis of other fighters' mental fortitude. He pointed specifically to the Khabib vs. McGregor fight as a moment where the physical battle was won because the mental battle ended early.
Conor McGregor broke mentally against Khabib Nurmagomedov
Conor [McGregor] broke mentally into that fight [against Khabib Nurmagomedov]. He didn't give up physically, but he gave up mentally. He looked like he wasn't there. At one point, that's what happened.
Beyond the fights, GSP shared an incredible story about encountering his childhood bully years later on the streets of Montreal. Instead of seeking revenge, the GOAT showed why he's different, offering the man money and encouragement that eventually helped him turn his life around. We also learned that GSP is a massive paleontology nerd, though he did break some hearts by confirming that a T-Rex is essentially just a giant, terrifying chicken.
Otter This World and Beyond
The show wrapped up with the debut of "Otter This World," a segment dedicated to the rollercoaster of emotions in the otter community. From the death of a famous dunking otter in Oregon to the viral "fat shaming" of Abby the otter at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the guys covered it all. PFT made his priorities very clear when it comes to animal-based superpowers.
I would rather be able to dunk than suck my own dick
Which would you rather do? [Dunk or suck your own dick]. For me, it's a no-brainer. I'd rather dunk. Yeah, I would dunk.
Finally, the guys checked in on Rick Pitino’s move to Greece. While Rick might be looking for a fresh start away from the NCAA, PFT is confident that the New Zealand Breakers still hold the crown for the best international basketball brand.
The New Zealand Breakers would crush Rick Pitino's Greek team
Panathinaikos versus the Breakers. Who wins? Breakers. Yeah, for real? Yeah, definitely. We would crush Panathinaikos. No chance.
2019 is right around the corner, and we're officially on "core" watch. Let's hope the Texans don't need another super fan to pass away to find their motivation.
