Will Compton and Sam Morril on College Football, Knicks, and Summer Camp
The finale of Barstool Summer Camp has arrived, and the physical toll is finally setting in. Big Cat and PFT are feeling the burn from a week of swimming relays and trampoline ball, but they aren't letting the soreness stop them from claiming absolute dominance in the podcasting pool. If there was a podcast Olympics, PFT is confident the hardware would be coming back to the office.
The PMT crew would beat any other podcast in a swimming relay
I think as a podcast though, we could beat pretty much any other podcast in a swimming relay. We showed some impressive skills [at Barstool Summer Camp].
Before the guests arrived, the guys hit the headlines, including the bizarre news that Jeff Bezos might not be buying the Celtics after all. Big Cat isn't buying the reports, mostly because he can't fathom a billionaire of that stature living life without a professional sports franchise to tinker with.
If you are ultra-wealthy and don't own a sports team, you're a weirdo
I'm fully supporting Jeff Bezos buying any team because it goes back to my original, my longtime take that if you're that rich and you don't own a sports team, you're a fucking weirdo.
While the reports say Bezos is out, PFT is convinced the Amazon founder is just playing the long game. It makes too much sense for him to grab a team that's already a proven winner rather than trying to build from the ground up.
Jeff Bezos is still interested in buying the Celtics despite reports to the contrary
I'm gonna dispute that report and say [Jeff Bezos] is not done [being interested]. He probably wants to buy a football team... but if you're a billionaire like Bezos, it's probably easier to buy a team that's not in complete disrepair and take that over like the Celtics. You've got a winner, a proven winner already. So I'm gonna dispute that report and say he's not done.
Week Zero Predictions and Nebraska Hype
With college football finally returning, it was time to put some skin in the game. PFT is riding with the Longhorns to take it all, while Hank threw out a massive longshot in the Big 10. Big Cat, meanwhile, is looking at the Lincoln Riley quarterback factory for his Heisman value play.
Miller Moss will win the Heisman Trophy
I'm gonna go with Miller Moss, USC. They play LSU week one. I think it's actually the Sunday game. So it's gonna be a standalone game if he comes out and balls... I also am high on USC this year simply because they got rid of Alex Grinch, the worst defensive coordinator of all time.
Will Compton joined the show (completely sober this time) to discuss his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers. After years of heartbreak, the Boy is once again convinced that this is the year the Huskers return to glory behind freshman sensation Dylan Raiola. He's not just talking bowl game; he's talking double-digit wins.
Nebraska will go 10-2 and compete for a playoff spot
Honestly, man, I think that they could, I think that they could compete this year... I think they could go 10 and two. You gotta think about it when you, if we're going into Ohio State, we're seven and oh... I think Raiola is gonna be a stud. We returned most of the black shirts, top defense last year.
Big Cat was quick to remind Will that Nebraska’s path to a revival still goes through the Badgers. Despite a brutal schedule that makes a playoff run difficult for Wisconsin, Big Cat made sure to highlight the historical hierarchy of the Big 10 West rivalry.
Wisconsin football 'handles' Nebraska whenever they play
Wisconsin handles Nebraska. That's a fact. ... Since Nebraska's been in the Big 10... you have been our bitch. That's a fact. Fact or fiction? What's the record? ... 10 and one. I knew that you knew that. 10 and one.
Things got even more contentious when the conversation shifted to the NFL. Will Compton is doubling down on his heater from last year by predicting a downfall for the Kansas City Chiefs, citing a "scrappy" AFC West that will finally give Patrick Mahomes some headaches.
The Chiefs will not win the AFC West and will enter the playoffs as a Wild Card
I think that division's [AFC West] gonna be scrappy, top to bottom... I think they make the playoffs as a wild card. I don't think they win the division. I'm telling you, I think it's just my—why do you hate the Chiefs? I don't hate the Chiefs. No, it feels personal.
Big Cat, who has seen this movie before, isn't buying it. He expects the Chiefs to cruise, especially with Jim Harbaugh still in the "roster overhaul" phase in Los Angeles.
The Chiefs will have no issues winning the AFC West
I don't think that division's [AFC West] gonna give them any problems. ... Are you crazy? Are you doing this again? ... I think the Chargers will be [better], because I believe in Harbaugh, but I don't think they're there. They're doing a full roster overhaul.
Sam Morril and the New Era Knicks
Comedian Sam Morril stopped by the new studio to celebrate his special, *You’ve Changed*, on Amazon Prime. As a die-hard Knicks fan, Sam spent most of the interview basking in the glow of the Jalen Brunson era. For Sam, Brunson isn't just a local hero; he belongs in the elite tier of the league.
Jalen Brunson is a top 10 player in the NBA
I can't remember loving a player this much... I think it's fair to say he's at, he's in the convo of a top 10 guy in my opinion. He's definitely in my top 10.
Sam also didn't hold back on the state of NBA broadcasting. He’s a purist who wants the gold standard of TNT and finds the alternative offerings on other networks to be a massive step down in entertainment value.
The ESPN NBA halftime show is terrible compared to TNT's Inside the NBA
I don't wanna watch [Stephen A. Smith's] halftime show. It's awful. When they go from TNT to him, I'm like, this is the biggest turnaround [downgrade] I've ever seen. ... It's just not good TV to me.
Beyond the Knicks, the conversation turned to the NBA’s all-time greats and the recent Olympic run. Big Cat offered a polarizing perspective on Kobe Bryant’s place in history, arguing that while he was legendary, he doesn't quite sit at the same table as MJ or LeBron.
Kobe Bryant is overrated relative to the all-time elite tier
I don't want to say what I think—Kobe's, he's very overrated. Because he is rated so high. Like he gets talked about like LeBron or Michael Jordan. I don't think he's in that spot. He wasn't the best player on the three-peat team... Shaq was an absolute monster.
Fyre Fest and The Dotson Trade
To wrap things up, the guys dove into Fyre Fest of the week, which featured Max and PFT arguing over who got the better end of the Jahan Dotson trade. Max is convinced the Eagles just stole a weapon from a division rival for pennies on the dollar.
The Eagles fleeced the Commanders in the Jahan Dotson trade
I like Jahan Dotson, a Penn State fan who's a beast at Penn State. Good wide receiver three. Give up a third, get back a fifth. Very happy. Fleeced. Fleeced.
On the other side, PFT is perfectly happy to let Dotson go, claiming that the Commanders’ wide receiver room is actually thriving without him. It’s a rare August trade that has both fanbases claiming a total victory.
The Commanders fleeced the Eagles in the Jahan Dotson trade
We're fleecing the Eagles. Big time. You bunch of bald eagles over there got fleeced so hard. [Dotson] was fighting for the second spot... he was I think losing that competition to Martavis Bryant.
Whether it’s Jahan Dotson’s future or Huey’s digestive issues at camp, it’s clear that football season couldn't have come at a better time.
